Das Prozessor-Update gibt es zunächst nur für die aktuellste Version von Windows 10, die Version 1709. Diese wird von Microsoft und Intel nur für Skylake-Prozessoren angeboten. Für andere Prozessoren stehen sie noch aus. In Kürze soll es auch für die Generation Coffee Lake, Kaby Lake, Broadwell und Haswell sogenannte Microcode-Updates geben. Diese sollen ebenfalls per Windows-Update verteilt werden.

Die Updates verlangsamen aktuelle Rechner laut Microsoft kaum, die Leistungseinbußen sollen "im einstelligen Prozentbereich" liegen. Bei älteren Prozessoren mit Windows 7 könnte sich die "Update-Bremse" dagegen deutlicher bemerkbar machen – auch im Alltagsbetrieb.

Windows-7-Computer ohne Virenscanner werden offenbar nicht mehr mit Sicherheitsupdates versorgt, berichtet "heise online". Grund ist demnach ein fehlender Eintrag in der Systemregistrierung, der verhindert, dass neuere Updates als jene vom Dezember 2017 in der Update-Liste auftauchen. Ob das eigene System betroffen ist, zeigt ein Blick in den Update-Verlauf der Systemsteuerung. Fehlt hier ein Eintrag mit dem Namen "2018-01-Monatliches Sicherheitsqualitätsrollup für Windows 7..." oder jünger, ist Handeln angesagt.

Laut "heise.de" ist die einfachste Lösung die Installation eines kostenlosen Virenscanners wie etwa "Microsoft Security Essentials" oder eines anderen Produkts.Die Fritzbox 7583 wurde entwickelt, um das Maximum aus alten Kupferleitungen herauszuholen. Die meisten Nutzer hierzulande werden wohl dennoch nicht in den Genuss der vom Hersteller genannten Spitzengeschwindigkeiten kommen.
