There are zillions of e-bike projects on kickstarter and indiegogo, but few are as polished as this one. It’s an e-bike that’s intentionally designed to not look like an e-bike, but still offer all the benefits of one. The Babymaker’s battery is hidden inside its normal-looking frame, and it has variable levels of pedal assist — but that’s where the modern bells and whistles stop. You won’t find any unnecessary mobile apps or annoying software updates attached to this bike, and that’s on purpose.

Er verweist etwa auf die Weiterentwicklung von Computerspielen, die zunehmend höhere Anforderungen stellen: "Die Auflösungen steigen, die Bildschirme werden größer, die angezeigten Bilder pro Sekunde schießen in die Höhe. Um das ordentlich darzustellen, braucht man leistungsfähige Grafikkarten – und die sind nun mal teurer als die alten Modelle."

Trotzdem kann sich etwa Martin Fischer durchaus vorstellen, dass die Preise der Grafikkarten wieder sinken, wenn das Kryptomining an eine unweigerliche Grenze stößt: "Die Frage ist, wie es mit dem Ethereum-Kurs weitergeht. Bei Bitcoin war der Schürfenthusiasmus anfangs sehr hoch, und irgendwann hat die Leistung der Grafikkarten nicht mehr ausgereicht, damit man lohnend Bitcoins schürfen konnte, weil die Berechnungen immer komplexer werden mussten, um neue Einheiten zu finden. Das wird bei Ethereum ähnlich sein."

Bis es so weit ist, rät Marktforscher Priestly: "Greifen Sie wenn möglich tief in die Tasche und kaufen Sie direkt das leistungsfähigste Modell, das Sie sich leisten können. Das ist zwar teuer, so haben Sie aber auch eine Grafikkarte mit möglichst hoher Halbwertszeit."

Martin Fischer vom Fachportal "Heise Online" empfiehlt Spielern, wegen des Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnisses derzeit eher auf Grafikkarten des Herstellers Nvidia zu schauen: "Wenn Sie in Full HD spielen, also mit normaler Fernsehauflösung, dann kommen Sie mit einer Geforce GTX 1050 TI oder einer GTX 1060 gut weiter. Die 1050 TI schafft es ganz ordentlich, Full HD anzuzeigen, vielleicht nicht mit kompletter Detailstufe, aber damit fährt man preis-leistungstechnisch sehr gut."

Wer bereits im Bereich der 4K-Auflösung unterwegs ist, muss entsprechend tiefer in den Geldbeutel greifen. "Wenn Sie jetzt mit voller Detailstufe die Spiele wiedergeben wollen, dann müssen Sie schon mit 600 Euro rechnen", sagt Fischer. Das wäre dann zum Beispiel die Geforce GTX 1080 oder 1080 TI. "Wenn Sie auf einige Details verzichten können, dann empfehle ich die GTX 1070, eine Alleskönnerkarte, die momentan aber auch noch um die 450 Euro kostet."
Künstliche Intelligenz krempelt die Welt wie einst die Dampfmaschine um. Maschinen lernen selbst und sind teilweise besser als menschliche Spezialisten. Das soll auch bei der Verbesserung der humanitären Hilfe helfen.

Doch der Armumfang wird in Krisengebieten millionenfach vermessen, um festzustellen, wie unterernährt die Kinder sind und welche Hilfe nötig ist.

Künstliche Intelligenz soll den Kleinen das künftig ersparen und gleichzeitig viel schnellere und akkuratere Erhebungen möglich machen. Wie dies und andere Ideen die humanitäre Hilfe revolutionären können, zeigen Erfinder und Experten diese Woche bei der Konferenz "Künstliche Intelligenz für gute Zwecke" in Genf, die bis zum 17. Mai geht.

Das Unternehmen Kimetrica in Kenia hat ein Programm entwickelt, das den Grad von Unterernährung bei unter Fünfjährigen anhand von Fotos mithilfe computergesteuerter Gesichtserkennung ermitteln kann. "Es wurde schon erfolgreich mit Erwachsenen getestet, jetzt füttern wir das Modell mit Körpermessungen aus Kenia und Fotos, um es richtig zu trainieren", sagt die Kimetrica-Direktorin in Kenia, Anita Shah.

Außerdem wird etwa im Irak getestet, ob Satellitenbilder Aufschluss über den Grad der Armut in einer abgelegenen Region liefern können. Die Computerprogramme könnten etwa auswerten, wie viele Leute elektrisches Licht haben, aus welchem Material Dächer sind, ob beim Haus Vieh gehalten wird.

Eine andere Überlegung ist, ob man aus der Mobiltelefonnutzung etwas über Armut oder Dürre ableiten kann. Zum Beispiel, wie oft Telefonkarten aufgeladen werden, ob mehr SMS geschickt oder Gespräche geführt werden, ob das von Dorf zu Dorf verschieden ist, wie lang Gespräche sind und wie groß das Netzwerk der Kontakte ist.

Seit Anfang Mai verteilt Microsoft in Wellen ein neues Funktionsupdate für Windows 10. Nach der Installation des Upgrades, das das Betriebssystem auf Version 1803 hebt, sollten Nutzer die Datenschutzeinstellungen genau prüfen. Sie lassen sich mit der Kombination "Windows" und "i"-Taste öffnen.
Dort sind neue Punkte wie etwa ein Aktivitätsverlauf hinzugekommen, berichtet das "c’t"-Fachmagazin (Ausgabe 12/18). Das bedeutet, dass Windows sich merkt, welche Anwendungen zuletzt genutzt und welche Dateien bearbeitet wurden, wenn der Verlauf aktiviert ist.

Zudem kann es sein, dass einige, bereits getroffene Datenschutzeinstellungen nach dem Update wieder zurückgesetzt sind. Auf Testrechnern stellten die Experten dieses Verhalten etwa bei den Einstellungen zum Datenschutz für die Kamera oder das Mikrofon fest.

Für die Verbesserung des Datenschutzes bieten viele Hersteller Programme an, zum Beispiel das kostenlose "O&O ShutUp10". Es ermöglicht Nutzern zu kontrollieren und einzustellen, welche Komfortfunktionen von Windows 10 sie nutzen und welche Datenweitergabe sie abstellen wollen.

Die Preise von Grafikkarten kennen seit vielen Monaten nur noch eine Richtung: aufwärts. Dadurch werden auch leistungsfähige Heimcomputer teurer. Was steckt dahinter und wann lohnt sich der Kauf trotzdem?

Dass ein leistungsfähiger Desktop-PC nicht gerade günstig ist, überrascht nicht. Doch seit geraumer Zeit hat sich der Neukauf eines Rechners zu einem ganz besonders kostspieligen Unterfangen entwickelt. Martin Fischer vom Fachportal "Heise Online" hat vor allem einen Grund für die Preisspirale identifiziert: Kryptomining, also das Erzeugen von Kryptowährungen wie Ethereum oder Bitcoin, die zeitweise schon wertvoller als Gold waren. "Weil man diese wertvolle Kryptowährung mit eigener Hardware schürfen kann, haben sich viele Menschen dazu entschieden, genau das zu tun", erklärt Fischer. Alles, was man dazu braucht, sind Grafikkarten.

Vor allem in Ostasien haben sich Fischer zufolge industrieartige Anlagen gebildet, die Tausende Grafikkarten schürfen lassen. Schnell lernen die sogenannten Kryptofarmen, dass einige Modelle besser geeignet sind als andere. "Ideale Grafikkarten müssen eine gewisse Rechenleistung bieten, damit die Kryptoeinheiten relativ flott erzeugt werden können", sagt der Experte. "Gleichzeitig dürfen sie keine allzu hohe Leistungsaufnahme haben, weil das den Stromverbrauch hochtreibt, wenn viele Grafikkarten zusammengeschaltet werden."

Das führt dazu, dass Farmen mit ihren Großeinkäufen für Engpässe auf dem Markt sorgen und die Preise steigen können. "Das Problem dabei ist natürlich, dass es nur eine endliche Zahl von Grafikkarten und Chips gibt, die auf dem Markt sind", führt Fischer aus. "Die Hersteller AMD und Nvidia produzieren festgelegte Mengen, die vorher genau kalkuliert und an der Nachfrage orientiert werden." Die riesige Nachfrage habe dazu geführt, dass die Karten teurer wurden und ihre Verfügbarkeit deutlich abnahm.

Doch Kryptomining trägt nicht die alleinige Schuld an der Verteuerung. Wie Fischer erklärt, habe sich zudem einer der beiden größten Grafikkarten-Hersteller quasi selbst ein Bein gestellt: "AMD veröffentlichte im August 2017 eine neue Grafikkartenserie namens Radeon RX Vega.

Diese Karten haben eine besondere Speichertechnik namens High Bandwith Memory (HBM), die die Speicherchips nicht mehr nebeneinander anordnet, sondern übereinander stapelt, was die Leistung der Karten erhört."

Das sei zwar eine spannende Technik, aber die Hersteller von HBM-Speicher konnten nicht so schnell produzieren, wie es für die Massenproduktion dieser AMD-Grafikkarten notwendig gewesen wäre, erklärt Fischer. "Insgesamt hatte das zur Folge, dass beispielsweise die Grafikkarte Radeon RX Vega 56 für einen Preis von 400 Euro angesetzt wurde." Tatsächlich liegt der Einstiegspreis nun aber bei 620 Euro – 55 Prozent mehr also. "Und da ist auch nicht absehbar, dass das deutlich billiger wird", so Fischer weiter.

Der Grund: es besaß keine aktiven Kühler, denn Steve Jobs fand die Geräte zu laut. Um den Apple III wieder zu reparieren, rieten Apple-Mitarbeiter zu einem einfachen Trick: Kunden sollten das Gerät etwas fünf Zentimeter über den Boden halten und dann fallen lassen. Durch den Aufprall rutschen die Chips wieder zurück an ihren Platz.

Symbole auf dem Bildschirm, eine Maus in der Hand – was heute als Standard gilt, war in den 80er Jahren Seltenheit. Computer bedienten Nutzer hauptsächlich per Kommandozeile. Doch 1983 beeindruckte Apple die Welt mit dem "Apple Lisa". Der Nachfolger des "Apple II" war der erste kommerzielle Computer mit einer grafischen Benutzeroberfläche und einer Maus.

Das Gerät soll nach Steve Jobs erster Tochter benannt worden sein. Apple selbst sagt, das der Name auf dem Akronym "Local Integrated Software Architecture" beruhe. But in exchange, you’re getting an IPS panel display that gives you the widest viewing angles possible with peak color accuracy, so your view won’t be compromised by desaturation no matter where you’re positioned. With this feature, you can share your screen with a partner or small group and never have to fight over who gets to see what’s on screen. Its Intel Celeron N4000 processor with 4GB of RAM is a huge upgrade from the Samsung’s N3060 in that it can match some Intel i5 models in operating frequency, giving you more leeway over what you can and can’t do simultaneously. With 10 uninterrupted hours of battery life, you can leave the charger behind because this can last a respectably long amount of time unplugged.

The Lenovo C340 Chromebook also comes with two USB 3.0 and USB-C ports each, with a Micro-SD card reader, so you can future-proof your studies. It also has a 720p webcam and mic for any video calls and voice conferences. The biggest selling point, however, is its 360-degree flip-and-fold design that allows you to transform your Chromebook to fit a variety of purposes like the flat tabletop and reverse pyramid presentation functions. This is when the touch-screen capabilities really shine as you never have to fidget with the touchpad for maximum versatility and utility. The biggest weakness is its 32GB eMMC flash memory, but this is easily remedied by an external hard drive. So, if you don’t mind the limited storage or already have a storage upgrade on-hand, then this is a non-issue. You can find the Lenovo C340 2-in-1 Touch-Screen Chromebook on Best Buy where it’s discounted at $259.

If an 11.6-inch screen isn’t enough for your needs, then starting with the Acer Spin 15 2-in-1 Touch-Screen Chromebook, you’re getting a huge increase in screen size with its 15.6-inch display. Not only that, but the features are far better and definitely justify the jump in price. The 15.6-inch display isn’t as compact as the previous entries, but you’re getting a noticeable increase in visual quality. However, this upgrade also ups the weight to just below 4.9 pounds, so carrying it around will be a bit more difficult than with an 11.6-inch Chromebook.

If you want to maximize your budget savings but want something that can match — if not outperform — some laptops, then you can check out the Lenovo Yoga C630 2-in-1 Touch-Screen Chromebook. It offers a middle ground in terms of weight and size with its 15.6-inch screen and 4.1-pound weight, making it an outstanding choice if you want something powerful but not too heavy.

Either way, this can result in bad or zero connectivity. Qualcomm’s latest chips use the company’s TrueWireless Mirroring tech, which alleviates this problem by automatically transferring the primary wireless connection between the two earbuds, effectively eliminating the whole idea of primary and secondary. True wireless earbuds that use these chips will let you use just the left earbud, just the right one, or both, without worrying about dropped connections.

One of the coolest innovations in the true wireless space from the past two years is Apple’s H1 wireless chip. Among other benefits, it enables hands-free access to Siri, Apple’s voice assistant. The only other company to offer a similarly hands-free option is Amazon via its Echo Buds — but that only extends to Alexa.

True wireless earbuds that embed Qualcomm’s more expensive chip, the QCC514X, will get this functionality, and it won’t be limited to a single voice assistant. Earbuds that use the less expensive QCC304X can also grant voice assistant access, but you’ll need to press or tap a button to do so.

One weakness that has plagued even the most expensive true wireless earbuds is a lack of decent battery life. Recently, we’ve seen some models — like the Samsung Galaxy Buds+ and the Master and Dynamic MW07 Plus — achieve up to 11 hours before needing to be popped back in their charging cases, but these are still rarities.

If Qualcomm’s claims for its new chips are accurate, we could soon see true wireless earbuds that deliver truly all-day performance, with up to 13 hours between charges. Throw in the extra capacity of the charging cases and that should extend the total time to almost 40 hours, assuming the case holds two full charges (most cases hold more than that).

When will we start to see new true wireless earbuds that include the latest Qualcomm chips? Given all of the uncertainty at the moment, that’s a tough thing to predict. Still, it wouldn’t surprise us if the first models appeared in time for the 2020 holiday season. We’ll let you know as soon as we spot them!

Der Softwarekonzern Microsoft hat vor den schottischen Orkney-Inseln ein Datenzentrum im Meer versenkt. Das Unternehmen wolle mit diesem Versuchsprojekt die Entwicklung von energieautarken Unterwasser-Datenzentren vorantreiben, teilte Microsoft UK am Mittwoch mit. Die Unternehmung nennt Microsoft "Project Natick".

Das etwa containergroße Datenzentrum auf dem Meeresgrund ist ein Prototyp. Microsoft zufolge kann der etwa zwölf Meter lange weiße Zylinder voller Computer bis zu fünf Jahre lang ohne Wartung Daten speichern und verarbeiten. Sollte allerdings in dieser Zeit etwas kaputtgehen, ist eine Reparatur nicht möglich, wie der Sender BBC erklärte. Das kalte Meerwasser vor den Inseln im Norden Schottlands kühlt das Datenzentrum, dadurch verbrauche es nur wenig Energie, so das Unternehmen.

Die benötigte Energie kommt per Unterseekabel demnach von regionalen erneuerbaren Energiequellen. Genutzt werden Gezeitenturbinen des European Marine Energy Centre, zudem Wind und Solarzellen. Der Datenverkehr erfolgt ebenfalls über dieses Kabel. Das Datenzentrum beherbergt 864 Server von Microsoft und hat eine Kapazität von 27,6 Petabyte – nach Angaben von Microsoft genug Platz, um etwa 5 Millionen Filme zu speichern.

Krzanich geriet zuletzt stark in die Kritik, weil er sein millionenschweres Aktienpaket in im November 2017 verkauft hatte. Wer dort anruft, landet allerdings bei Menschen, die versuchen, sich Zugriff zum Computer zu verschaffen oder nutzlose Software gegen eine Geldzahlung zu verkaufen.

Die Bundesnetzagentur warnt ausdrücklich vor solchen Werbeanzeigen, die sich gern auch in eigenen Fenstern öffnen. Nutzer sollten sie unbedingt ignorieren.Die Regulierungsbehörde hat nach eigenen Angaben vier 0800-Nummern aus dem Verkehr gezogen und sperren lassen, die im Zusammenhang mit dieser Betrugsmasche genutzt wurden.

Die Masche mit Anrufen vermeintlicher Microsoft-Techniker ist nicht neu. Immer wieder nutzen Betrüger die weite Verbreitung des Betriebssystems aus, um Daten auszuspähen oder Nutzer zu Zahlungen zu veranlassen. Nach Angaben von Microsoft enthalten offizielle Fehlermeldungen von Windows niemals Telefonnummern.

So sind zum Beispiel Funklöcher in der Wohnung leichter zu schließen. Geräte verbinden sich jeweils über den Zugangspunkt mit dem besten Empfang.

Even though a number of laptops have launched with AMD’s powerful Ryzen 4000 mobile processors, Origin PC is bringing desktop performance to its new EON 15-X gaming laptop and NS-15 mobile workstation by packing AMD’s Ryzen 9 3900 desktop processor inside.
The desktop silicon gives these mobile powerhouses a chip that supports 12 cores and 24 threads, rather than the eight-core design of the mobile CPU variant. Origin PC is also pairing AMD’s processing power with Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 2070 graphics for gaming and creative workflows on the go.
Despite being available with so much power, Origin PC’s Eon 15-X and NS-15 still manages to remain slim, thanks to its use of Nvidia’s Max-Q design. The laptops measure just 1.2 inches thick in a form that weighs just 5.9 pounds. The new EON 15-X and NS-15 are said to be 20% lighter and thinner than the previous generation models.

“Thanks to the AMD Ryzen processor inside Origin’s PC’s Eon 15-X, this new desktop replacement laptop is perfect for gamers, content creators, and anyone needing a high level of productivity,” said Frank Azor, AMD Chief Architect of Gaming Solutions. “The 12-core AMD Ryzen 9 3900 processor enables revolutionary performance on a laptop.”

And like most modern gaming laptops, these new Origin PC offerings ship with a narrow bezel surrounding the 15.6-inch FHD 1080p display, giving the notebooks an 85% screen-to-body ratio. Additionally, for gamers who need to stay on top of the action, the panel supports a 144Hz refresh rate.
Though the refresh rate here is good for minimizing screen tears during action-packed games, it isn’t as high as the 300Hz panels that we’re seeing from other high-end gaming laptops.

The laptops come with dual NVMe M.2 SSD slots for a maximum storage capacity of 4TB along with 32GB of DDR4 memory, so performance and storage should not be a problem.

Pricing for these new desktop-powered laptops starts at $1,624 for a configuration that includes a six-core Ryzen 5 3600 processor, and upgrades will quickly add to the cost of these devices. On a fully maxed out configuration, the Eon 15-X can run as high as $3,751. Those looking for customization can also choose from a number of paint jobs or custom laser-etched graphics designs from Origin.

Qualcomm, the company that makes a significant number of the tiny chips that give Bluetooth devices their wireless capabilities, has just announced its latest SoCs (system-on-a-chip): The Qualcomm QCC514X and Qualcomm QCC304X. And though you will likely never run across these names or model numbers as you’re shopping for a new set of wireless headphones or true wireless earbuds, they’re about to have a profound impact on what those gadgets can do and how much they’ll cost.

Perhaps the most significant change these new chips will bring is active noise cancellation (ANC). ANC has been a popular feature in wireless headphones and has recently made its way into true wireless earbuds too. Unfortunately, it tends to be found only on the most expensive models like Apple AirPods Pro ($249) and Sony WF-1000XM3 ($199-230).

With Qualcomm’s new chips, ANC is built-in, which means that manufacturers won’t have to go to the trouble (time and money) of integrating their own proprietary ANC technologies to offer this feature. In as little as a year, we could see ANC go from being a premium feature to something that appears on true wireless earbuds at almost every price.

The device’s 13-inch anti-glare touchscreen is highly responsive. It can get extremely bright, so using this laptop outdoors won’t be a problem. Colors look great and contrasts are terrific, although we did find one issue with the anti-glare coating. It’s great at preventing reflections, but the edges and corners tend to look a little murky at certain angles. Unerwünschte Huckepack-Programme vom Windows-Rechner fernzuhalten, ist die Aufgabe des Gratis-Tools "Unchecky", berichtet "Computerbild.de". Es entfernt bei Installationen automatisch die Häkchen in vorausgefüllten Checkboxen – und schützt den Nutzer so vor ungewollten Zusatzprogrammen, Toolbars oder Schrott-Programmen ("Crapware").

Apple hat eingeräumt, dass die Tastaturen seiner neueren Macbook-Laptops anfällig für Probleme sein können und repariert sie kostenlos. Das Reparatur-Programm folgt nach monatelangen Beschwerden von Nutzern über Tasten, die klemmen oder nicht mehr richtig funktionieren.
Wie Apple erklärte, leidet "ein kleiner prozentualer Anteil" der Tastaturen der Modelle "Macbook" und "Macbook Pro" an den Problemen. Macbook Air-Modelle scheinen nicht betroffen zu sein.

Anfällig ist offenbar eine Tastatur-Technik, die Apple zuerst 2015 im besonders dünnen Macbook eingeführt hatte. Intel erklärte, das Unternehmen sei kürzlich darüber informiert worden, dass der 58-jährige Krzanich eine "einvernehmliche Beziehung" mit einer Angestellten unterhalten habe. Eine Untersuchung durch interne und externe Experten habe ergeben, dass der Konzernchef damit gegen die Vorschriften verstoßen habe. Sie verbieten Führungskräften Beziehungen zu Untergebenen.

Um der Nachfrage nach immer leistungsfähigeren und energieeffizienten Chips nachzukommen, geht Intel inzwischen Kooperationen mit Herstellern von Grafik-Chips (GPU) ein. Lange galten diese gegenüber den Computer-Chips (CPU) als Rechenknechte, an die einfache und wiederkehrende Arbeiten ausgelagert werden können. Doch ihre Bedeutung nimmt für moderne Simulationen und Künstliche Intelligenz stetig zu. Vor diesem Hintergrund hat Intel auch seine lange Feindschaft mit AMD aufgegeben und verbaut in seinen neusten Chipsets "Kaby Lake G" für Laptops neben seinen CPUs auch AMDs GPUs "Radeon".

Die Kombi-Einheiten sollen deutlich besser aufeinander abgestimmt sein und auch merklich weniger Energie erfordern. Zuvor hatte Intel schon Technologie des Grafik-Chip-Anbieters Nvidia lizenziert, doch aus den Partnern werden zunehmend Konkurrenten: Mit seinen jüngsten Produkten stößt Nvidia in den Markt für Server und Hochleistungscomputer vor, die traditionelle Domäne von Intel.


Schaut man sich die aktuelle Liste der schnellsten Supercomputer der Welt an, kann man erkennen, wie gut Nvidia sich als Intel-Rivale inzwischen in Stellung gebracht hat. Erstmals seit 25 Jahren lieferten nicht CPUs, sondern GPUs den größten Anteil der Rechenleistung. Der Einzug der Grafik-Chips in die Forschungs-Labors, Universitäten und kommerziellen Datenzentren werde die Landschaft der Supercomputer für immer verändern, schätzt Michael Feldman, Chefredakteur der "Top-500-Liste".

Höchste Zeit für Intel, jetzt selbst verstärkt auf Grafik-Chips zu setzen. Ende letzten Jahres stellte Intel den GPU-Chefarchitekten von AMD, Raja Koduri ein, der kürzlich über Twitter ankündigte, dass Intel bereits bis 2020 einen eigenen diskreten GPU-Chip bauen wolle.

Neben wachsender Konkurrenz aus ganz neuer Richtung könnte Intel – und damit der gesamten PC-Industrie – allerdings noch ganz andere Unbill in nächster Zukunft drohen: Vor rund einem Jahr wurden verheerende Lücken direkt im Design der Prozessoren von Intel, aber auch anderer Anbieter gefunden. Das potenzielle Einfallstor war Jahrzehnte unentdeckt geblieben. Es bietet mit "Spectre" und "Meltdown" eine völlig neue Klasse von Angriffsmöglichkeiten. Dabei wird ein Design-Merkmal der Chips ausgenutzt, das eigentlich die Rechenprozesse beschleunigen soll.

Noch ist es offenbar zu keinen Angriffen gekommen, doch das kann sich jederzeit ändern. Die Hersteller arbeiten seither mit Hochdruck daran, mit Updates und Patches die Lücken zu stopfen – was bislang das Risiko eines Angriffs jedoch nur abgemildert hat. Und: Anfang Mai entdeckten Forscher gleich acht neue Sicherheitslücken nach ähnlichem Strickmuster in Intel-Prozessoren. Wie das IT-Fachmagazin "c’t" berichtet, schätzt Intel selbst vier der "Spectre"-Lücken als hoch riskant ein.

Verschärfend kommt hinzu, dass Intel derzeit ohne Chef dasteht. CEO Brian Krzanich trat Mitte Juni zurück, nachdem eine Affäre zu einer Mitarbeiterin bekannt geworden war. Eine Nachfolge steht noch nicht fest.

Die Krise erinnert an die Zeit, als Intel schon einmal dicht am Abgrund stand: Mitte der 90er Jahre ein Fehler in der Fließkomma-Berechnung bei einem Pentium-Chip entdeckt wurde, der sich bereits im Handel befand. Zunächst hatte Intel versucht, den Fehler zu vertuschen, dann stillschweigend zu korrigieren.

Microsoft hat die in Windows 10 enthaltene Taschenrechner-Software überarbeitet. Der Anlass: Bei bestimmten Berechnungen machte das Programm einen kuriosen Fehler.

Weiterhin machten den Herstellern die veränderten Nutzungsgewohnheiten von privaten Kunden zu schaffen. Denn die erledigen viele Dinge inzwischen lieber mit dem Smartphone statt mit dem PC, so Kitagawa. Im Geschäftskunden-Bereich werde sich die Nachfrage in zwei Jahren abschwächen, wenn die Unternehmen bei ihrem Umstieg auf Windows 10 ihre Hardware weitgehend ersetzt hätten.

Vor genau 50 Jahren legten der Physiker Bob Noyce und sein Kollege Gordon Moore den Grundstein von Intel. Beide waren Teil der legendären "Untreuen Acht", die aus Unzufriedenheit mit der Entwicklungsstrategie ihres damaligen Arbeitgebers "Fairchild Semiconductor" das Unternehmen verließen und ihre eigene Firma gründeten.

Zunächst legte Intel den Schwerpunkt auf die Produktion von Speicherchips. Der erste Mikroprozessor entstand 1971. Kurioserweise, weil zwei Intel-Ingenieure den Wunsch eines Kunden schlicht ignorierten. Eigentlich sollten sie einen Chip für eine simple Rechenmaschine bauen. Die Intel-Entwickler entschieden dann aber auf eigene Kappe, einen deutlich leistungsfähigeren Chip zu konstruieren: Intels ersten serienreifen Mikroprozessor 4004. Erst 1978 brachte Intel dann mit dem 8086 den ersten Prozessor der x86er-Reihe auf den Markt, der die PC-Ära einleitete.

In den folgenden Jahrzehnten trug vor allem die Partnerschaft mit Microsoft zum florierenden Geschäft für Intel bei, das als "Wintel-Kartell" in die Geschichte einging. Immer leistungshungrigere Software erforderte immer leistungsfähigere Hardware. Mit seinem kleinen Konkurrenten AMD ging Intel dabei nicht zimperlich um. This ProBook 450 G6 comes with an 8th-gen Intel Core i5 processor, although you can get other configurations (an Intel i7 processor is an option) for a bit more money. This chipset isn’t the most advanced but it does sip power, contributing to a battery life that can last up to 8 hours, more than enough for a full day’s work. Its UHD 620 graphics processor is adequate but won’t provide you with mindblowing gaming performance. Overall, this laptop is sufficiently speedy and is energy efficient, so we have no major complaints.

The keyboard contains the trackpad. Flip the tablet and you’ll find a retractable stand that supports it in an upright position without having to connect to the keyboard. Unfortunately, you won’t find an SD card reader, which is a massive letdown. The real star of the Elite x2 is the Active Pen, HP’s stylus which connects via Bluetooth and charges through the USB-C port. It features 4,096 pressure points and is extremely intuitive, excellent for drawing on Photoshop or the Windows Sketchpad app.

The Elite x2’s keyboard is pretty decent. The keys are reasonably spaced and offer a pleasant typing experience thanks to satisfactory travel and feedback. The touchpad is also equally good, nicely precise, and responsive. Now for the downside, and it’s a major one: Despite being quite innovative, the lack of a hinge means that only the kickstand holds the tablet up.

Face ID on a MacBook would be more secure than Touch ID and even more convenient — all you’d have to do would be to sit down at your desk and look and your screen, then boom — you’re logged in. No reaching for a Touch ID button, just a seamless experience of the kind Apple is well known for. Interestingly, Apple seems to be at least considering bringing Face ID to Macs, according to a recently unearthed patent. Whether the company will actually implement it, however, is unknown.

We’d also be remiss if we didn’t talk about the ports. Apple thankfully seems to have left behind the days of the single USB-C port now that it’s killed the 12-inch MacBook, but it’s still possible to buy a brand-new MacBook Pro with just two USB-C ports. That’s appropriate for the MacBook Air, but for a device aimed at professional users with a plethora of accessories, monitors, and devices to connect up, that’s just not enough. We’re all for the super-speed benefits of Thunderbolt 3, but we need enough ports to be able to get our work done without drowning in dongles.

Finally, we’d love to see better battery life. We were disappointed with the MacBook Pro 13’s battery life, and even the MacBook Pro 16 didn’t give as much juice as we were hoping for, despite its enormous battery. Our prayers could be answered, though, as MacOS Catalina 10.15.5 contains a new Battery Health Management feature that actively measures your charging habits and your battery temperature to prolong its lifespan. We’re hopeful this means the MacBook Pro 2020 should last longer than its predecessor.

The HP Omen 15 is a great upper-range gaming laptop thanks to its 9th-gen i7 processor, 16GB RAM, and Nvidia GeForce GTX 2060 GPU, which will easily handle modern games at high settings for years to come. You also get both a 256GB SSD and a 1TB HDD.
HP Omen X 2S RTX Studio Gaming Laptop — $2,024 ($676 off): There’s no other laptop quite like the new HP Omen X 2S, which features a touchscreen interface built into the keyboard area. But what’s under the hood is just as impressive: This one pairs an i7 CPU with 16GB of RAM and a beefy Nvidia GTX 2080 GPU (with 8GB VRAM), plus a very nicely sized 1TB solid state drive.

Kuo reckons this tech will launch in the 14.1-inch MacBook Pro and a refreshed MacBook Pro 16, as well as a 27-inch ‌iMac Pro‌, a 12.9-inch ‌iPad Pro‌, a 10.2-inch ‌iPad‌, and a 7.9-inch ‌iPad‌ mini. This belief was recently backed up by a report from Taiwanese publication DigiTimes. Packing so many LEDs into a MacBook Pro display will result in exceptional HDR performance, wide color, and high contrast, while also avoiding the burn-in problems that OLED panels can experience. All in all, that should help take Apple’s MacBook Pro displays to another level entirely.

There are a few caveats. For one thing, Kuo understandably expects such advanced tech to cost an arm and a leg, so it won’t make it to every Apple device. Kuo also predicts a launch date of late 2020 to somewhere around the middle of 2021, meaning we may have to wait a little longer for this super display. Although Kuo doesn’t believe the Mini-LED MacBook Pro will be delayed by the coronavirus pandemic, a recent China Times report claimed the opposite, suggesting mass production of the panels won’t start until 2021. We will have to see who turns out to be correct.

It’s no secret that Apple has become frustrated with Intel, as the chip manufacturer has often struggled to meet deadlines, resulting in MacBooks launching without the latest and greatest processors inside them. It seems that Apple has just about run out of patience, and could well be looking elsewhere for its MacBook Pro processors. The question is which alternative it’ll settle on.

Though sticking with Intel is most likely, the leading replacement candidate is AMD. In February 2020, MacOS beta code was unearthed that referred to numerous AMD processors and graphics chips, including “Renoir,” which is a code name for AMD’s Ryzen 4000-series processors. The U series chips offer up to eight cores and 16 threads while using a tiny 25 watts of power. While it’s possible Apple was just testing them out and has no intention of using them in future Macs, Renoir’s power-to-performance ratio seems perfect for a top-end machine like the MacBook Pro.

Apple demands very power-efficient parts for the MacBook Pro to enable it to be almost silent during most operations, and these chips would be easily efficient enough for Apple’s taste. Bringing these eight-core U-series processors to the 13-inch MacBook Pro could revolutionize what creative professionals could do with a smaller laptop.

What about ARM? Rumors of Apple switching its processors from Intel to ARM have been floating around for years, but it looks like late 2020 or early 2021 could be the time this finally becomes reality according to a report from Ming-Chi Kuo. Both Bloomberg and Axios have reported that Apple is well underway with the switch, codenamed Kalamata, and Apple has proved that its own ARM-based chips are capable due to their superb performance in devices like the iPad Pro.

There’s another reason Apple may switch to ARM, and interestingly enough it comes not from the world of hardware — but of software. The clue here is Project Catalyst, Apple’s ongoing effort to make iOS apps work on the Mac. The project has started with iPad apps making the leap first, and supposedly will expand to include iPhone apps in 2020. The eventual goal is to allow any app work on any Apple platform. Apple could be hoping to facilitate this by outfitting all of its devices with ARM chips. This would make life massively easier for app developers, who could work on apps knowing they’d be running on the same architecture regardless of the device.

While Apple’s ARM-based A-series chips have shown impressive performance, it’s unknown how well they would stack up against the high-end Intel or AMD chips worthy of the MacBook Pro. Former Apple senior executive Jean-Louis Gassée has raised an interesting point: Ampere Computing already sells high-powered ARM chips that can compete with Intel Xeon processors, thus potentially paving the way for even the Mac Pro to switch to Apple-made chips.
Added to that is a report from Bloomberg that claimed Apple is actively working on an ARM MacBook with a 12-core processor inside, and that the company is looking beyond 12 cores for future models. If such a processor were to make it to the MacBook Pro, things could get very interesting.

Still, we expect that Apple will probably debut ARM chips in the MacBook Air (potentially at the Worldwide Developers Conference), which is a safer bet given in the MacBook Air performance is less important, then perhaps transition the MacBook Pro to ARM at a later date.

There are a few other things that we’d love to see on the 2020 MacBook Pro. While not all of these have been rumored, we wouldn’t be surprised to see any of them in the next iteration of the device.Top of our list has to be Face ID. While the iPhone has had Face ID (and Windows has had Windows Hello) for a while now, Apple’s MacBooks have been bereft of this tech for far too long.

Das erste kumulative Update nach der Veröffentlichung eines größeren Funktions-Update, wie es das zuletzt Ende April gegeben hat, ist etwa 100 bis 200 Megabyte groß, rechnet Microsoft vor. Weil die Dateien aber mit jeder weiteren Aktualisierung um weitere Komponenten und Funktionen anwachsen, sind nach sechs bis acht Monaten häufig schon Dateigrößen von 1 oder 1,2 Gigabyte erreicht. Wenn sich die Download-Dateien auch noch durch eine langsame Leitung quetschen müssen, braucht man Geduld.

Jetzt nimmt Microsoft Änderungen an dem bisherigen Update-Modell vor. So sollen datenintensiven Delta-Updates ab dem 12. Februar 2019 von schnelleren Express-Updates abgelöst werden. Zur Erklärung: Microsoft unterscheidet zwischen drei verschiedenen Update-Typen:
Vollständige Updates umfassen alle Komponenten und Dateien, die sich seit dem Release der aktuellen Windows 10-Version verändert haben. Solche Updates können, wie oben beschrieben, schnell auf über 1 Gigabyte anwachsen.

Delta-Updates enthalten nur die Komponenten, die seit dem letzten Update aktualisiert wurden. Jedes Delta-Update baut auf das vorherige auf. Man muss also alle nacheinander installieren und kann keines überspringen. Die Dateigröße beträgt zwischen 300 und 500 Megabyte.
Express Updates installieren nur die neuesten Änderungen. Statt also wie beim Delta-Update die gesamte Windows-Komponente zu aktualisieren, werden nur einzelne Dateien ausgetauscht und auf den neuesten Stand gebracht. Der Download- und Installationsprozess dürfte deutlich schneller gehen, da er nur 150 bis 200 Megabyte misst.

Diese Express Updates gibt es schon seit 2017. Sie sollen aber bis 2019 zum neuen Standard werden. Dabei gilt dann: Je häufiger der Nutzer sein System aktualisiert, desto geringer ist die Größe der Download-Datei. Wer es hingegen versäumt, sein System regelmäßig auf Updates zu überprüfen, sitzt am Ende doch wieder länger vor dem PC und schaut beim Installieren zu.

Der PC, lange totgesagt, ist wieder im Trend. Erstmals seit sechs Jahren steigt der Absatz. Ob das so bleibt, ist fraglich. Denn viele Nutzer bevorzugen ein anderes Gerät.Der weltweite Absatz von Personal Computern hat im zweiten Quartal seit 2012 wieder zugelegt. Das belegen vorläufige Zahlend er Marktforschungsfirma Gartner. Insgesamt seien 62,1 Millionen Geräte verkauft worden, ein Zuwachs von 1,4 Prozent im Vergleich zum Vorjahres-Quartal.
Vor allem die Nachfrage von Firmen habe das Wachstum bedingt und die rückläufigen Geschäfte mit privaten Nutzern ausgeglichen, sagte Gartner-Analystin Mikako Kitagawa. Von einer echten Erholung könne aber noch nicht gesprochen werden.
