"QLED-Monitore liegen preislich, verglichen mit LCD-Monitoren, um 20 bis 50 Prozent höher, je nach Größe und Auflösung. Die Investition lohnt sich vor allem für Gamer, Filmfans, Bild- und Video-bearbeitende Berufe", so Hockel. Gerade diese würden auch von schnellen und großen Monitoren ab 48 Zoll aufwärts profitieren.

Windows-Nutzer in den USA und Europa sollten derzeit beim Surfen besonders wachsam sein: Denn wie aus einer Sicherheitswarnung von Microsoft hervorgeht, treibt eine neue Malware ihr Unwesen, die sich unter anderem hinter manipulierten Werbebannern verbirgt.

"Nodersok" soll seit Juli aktiv sein und seither Tausende Computer angegriffen haben, schätzt Microsoft. Offenbar handelt es sich um eine Kampagne, möglicherweise mit dem Ziel, ein Botnetz zu errichten. Bereits infizierte Geräte dienen dabei als Proxy, also als Stellvertreter, um die Schadsoftware weiterzuverbreiten.

So geht die Malware vor: mehrstufiger Angriff
In einer Grafik erklärt Microsoft, wie "Nodersok" funktioniert. Demnach kann sich der Nutzer die Malware beim Surfen im Browser einfangen, beispielsweise, indem er auf eine präparierte Werbeanzeige klickt oder auf anderem Wege eine manipulierte Datei im Browser herunterlädt und öffnet.

Daraufhin wird ein JavaScript ausgeführt, das weiteren Schadcode nachlädt. Dieser versucht, die Windows-Schutzmechanismen zu durchbrechen, Befehle auszuführen und das System unter seine Kontrolle zu bringen. Dazu befällt die Schadsoftware bereits in Windows enthaltene Programme und missbraucht sie für ihre Zwecke.

Laut Microsoft ist der Windows Defender unter Windows 10 jedoch in der Lage, die Schadsoftware zu stoppen, bevor sie sich im System einnisten kann. EA confirmed that Dice will have extra time to make Battlefield 6, and that the upcoming first-person shooter would arrive on next-gen consoles. Specific consoles weren’t named but we’d be shocked if the Xbox Series X wasn’t one of them. The next Xbox will not support virtual reality. While Microsoft has championed VR on PCs, the company is less keen about its place on consoles. Xbox lead Phil Spencer said an interview with Stevivor that "nobody is asking for VR" and that customers know to go to PC if they want to play VR.

Alienware’s Area-51m gaming laptop played Rise of the Tomb Raider at 92 frames per second while the Asus ROG Mothership notched 84 fps at 1080p resolution on Very High settings.Unless the Navi GPU somehow blows the doors off the RTX 2080 powering those beastly gaming rigs (we doubt that), the Xbox Series X will need to dial down the settings to reach Microsoft’s 4K at 60fps goal. Still, what Microsoft is claiming can’t be ignored: the Xbox Series X will be crazy powerful and should offer better graphics-per-dollar than any gaming laptop on the market.

We already know exactly how the Series X looks about a year before it’s set to launch. The console’s simple rectangular "tower" design is reminiscent of a desktop PC. On the front of the Xbox Series X is an illuminated Xbox logo and a disk slot, which will be a relief to folks who still buy physical copies. The top of the console is more interesting. Hiding under a centered top grille is a bright green circle. It’s hard to tell from the reveal trailer, but it appears to be green LEDs or a painted component.

There is a heated discussion about the Xbox Series X’s size. It looks massive in the renders but the folks at Gamespot say the console is three times taller than the new controller and about as wide. But there’s still much we don’t know about Series X, so we’ve compiled the official details Microsoft has revealed along with the most credible rumors to give you a comprehensive picture of what to expect when the console releases in late 2020. Formerly known as Project Scarlett, the console’s official name is Xbox Series X. Microsoft announced the name (and other details) at the annual Game Awards in a move that shocked fans and media alike.

It’s possible the Series X is only one of multiple next-gen Xbox consoles. Rumors about a mysterious entry-level model codenamed Lockhart (but possibly the Xbox Series S) have been floating around, and are all but confirmed. After all, we need the console to ship in time to place it under the tree on December 25.

Pricing will be an important piece of the Series X’s commercial success. While we don’t know exactly how much the console (or consoles) will cost, Microsoft promises to not repeat the same mistakes it made with the Xbox One. “I would say a learning from the Xbox One generation is we will not be out of position on power or price,” Phil Spencer, Microsoft’s Xbox and gaming chief, said in an interview with The Verge.

Before we get into the details, it’s worth mentioning that some rumors claim there will be not just one, but two separate versions of the upcoming Xbox: a lower-end SKU nicknamed "Lockhart" and a premium model internally named "Anaconda." The report claims that Microsoft is targeting around 12 teraflops (TF) of power in the higher-end Xbox Series X, or twice that of the Xbox One X (the current most powerful console) and many times greater than the Xbox One S. The lower-end "Lockhart" console will slot between the Xbox One X and One S in terms of power, with 4 teraflops of computing power. However, a recent report claims Lockhart, also called the Xbox Series X, could get up to 7.9TF.

Shifting to official news, the Xbox Series X will feature a custom AMD Zen 2 processor with a Navi GPU that supports ray tracing, frame rates at up to 120 frames per second, 8K resolution support and the fastest GDDR6 memory, along with variable refresh rates.

We don’t know the exact components powering the console (or consoles) but reports suggest it will have an eight-core chip with 16GB of RAM, 13GB of which will be allocated for games (the other 3GB will go to the OS). Spencer told Gamespot that Microsoft wants the next console to run games at 4K resolution at 60 frames per second. If it hits that mark, expect a significant leap in fidelity along with a smoother gaming experience.

Ray tracing could be critical in making next-gen games look better than ever. For those who aren’t familiar, ray tracing is a rendering technique that simulates how light bounces off an object. The result is lighting effects and shadows that look practically photorealistic. The Xbox Series X will use a custom SSD that is said to be 40x faster than the one in current models. Microsoft’s next console, the Xbox Series X, will arrive in late 2020. While we’re several months away from the launch of Xbox Series X, Microsoft has already revealed a surprising amount of information about the console, including its name, design and even early game launches. Based on what we know, the Series X could be an excellent alternative, or complement, to one of the best gaming laptops.

Apple schließt Lücke mit Update
Dort reagierte man mittlerweile: Laut der IT-Seite "ArsTechnica" wird die Lücke jeweils mit den Updates "iTunes 12.10.1 für Windows" und "iCloud für Windows 7.14" behoben. Standardmäßig erfolgen diese eigentlich automatisch. Wer eines der beiden Programme nutzt, sollte sicherheitshalber aber prüfen, ob die Updates tatsächlich aufgespielt wurden.

Problematisch ist allerdings, dass die Lücke nicht etwa in den beiden Programmen selbst steckt, sondern in der Hilfssoftware "Bonjour", die stets mitinstalliert wird. Morphisec berichtet gegenüber Ars Technica, dass das Hilfsprogramm oft unbemerkt weiter auf den PCs installiert bleibe, auch wenn iTunes und iClouds längst nicht mehr vorhanden seien.

Gefahr droht auch, wenn Programme längst weg sind
Selbst wer eines der beiden Programme also vor langer Zeit von seinem Rechner geschmissen hat, sollte nachschauen ob sich Bonjour noch auf dem PC befindet und es händisch deinstallieren. Dazu gibt man unter Windows 10 "Apps & Features" in die Suchleiste und startet die Anwendung. Hier werden alle installierten Programme aufgelistet – sie lassen sich per Klick entfernen.

Bei Windows 7 klickt man zunächst auf den Start-Knopf und wählt im rechten Menübereich "Systemsteuerung" aus. Dort findet sich unter dem Icon "Programme" die Schaltfläche "Programm deinstallieren".Das Herbst-Update für Windows 10 lässt womöglich länger auf sich warten. Zwar werden keine großen Veränderungen erwartet. Trotzdem gibt es Probleme.

Zweimal im Jahr bringt Microsoft ein großes Funktions-Update für Windows 10 heraus. Eines davon steht im Oktober an. Doch es gibt Hinweise, dass sich die Veröffentlichung verzögern könnte. Die Windows-Version 1909 könnte demnach erst im November verteilt werden. Das berichtet Chip.de und beruft sich auf einen Tweet des Microsoft-Entwicklers Zac Bowden. Grund seien mehrere Fehler in der aktuellen Testversion, die noch ausgebügelt werden müssen, bevor das finale Update veröffentlicht werden soll.

Die "Ihr Smartphone"-App muss zunächst aus dem Windows App Store heruntergeladen, installiert und eingerichtet werden. Über die App haben Nutzer unter anderem Zugriff auf ihre Foto-Galerie, Nachrichten und Benachrichtigungen wie Kalendereinträge. In der neuen Version werden außerdem vergangene und verpasste Anrufe angezeigt und eine Nummernkonsole, um neue Anrufe zu starten.

Die Koppelung mit dem Smartphone funktioniert via Bluetooth. Der Rechner muss also eine Bluetooth-Verbindung unterstützen. Das Smartphone auf der anderen Seite braucht mindestens Android 7.0, damit die Anruffunktion via Windows 10 genutzt werden kann.
Microsoft liefert regelmäßig neue Versionen für Windows 10. Für eine ältere Version wird der Support in wenigen Tagen eingestellt. Nutzer sollten ihr System darum aktualisieren. Wir zeigen, wie das geht.

Die wohl konkreteste, aber auch harmloseste Gefahr ist, dass eine solche Lizenz nicht funktioniert und sich Käufer dann mit dem Verkäufer über eine Erstattung streiten müssen. Das könnte auch Käufer der bei Edeka verkauften Lizengo-Lizenzen treffen.

Generell können die Folgen der Nutzung illegaler Lizenzen für den Anwender aber noch weitreichender sein, erklärt Christian Solmecke. So sei auch eine Sperrung des Accounts beim Hersteller denkbar, weil man als Nutzer gegen die Allgemeinen Geschäftsbedingungen verstoßen hat. "Auch möglich sind Abmahnungen der Hersteller oder Schadensersatzforderungen, weil man ohne Berechtigung ein Produkt des Herstellers genutzt hat."

Selbst strafrechtliche Konsequenzen können der Kauf und die Nutzung illegaler Software nach sich ziehen, schätzt Rechtsanwalt Solmecke. Denkbar wären seiner Ansicht nach Ermittlungen wegen "unerlaubter Verwendung von Software nach dem Urheberrechtsgesetz" (Freiheitsstrafe von bis zu drei Jahren oder Geldstrafe, wenn man die Software auf den Computer lädt).

Allerdings müsste der Käufer die Illegalität der Quelle dabei "billigend in Kauf genommen" haben, ergänzt Solmecke. Auf die Käufer der Edeka-Lizenzen trifft das vermutlich eher nicht zu.

Denkbar sei beim Kauf illegaler Softwarelizenzen dafür theoretisch eine Anklage wegen Geldwäsche, glaubt der Medienrechtsanwalt. Hier könne auch derjenige belangt werden, der leichtfertig nicht erkennt, dass der Gegenstand aus einer rechtswidrigen Tat herrührt. Ob und inwieweit Microsoft im Fall der bei Edeka verkauften Lizenzen überhaupt plant, gegen Käufer vorzugehen, ist nicht bekannt. Klar wird allerdings, dass Verbraucher beim Kauf äußerst günstiger Softwarelizenzen generell sehr vorsichtig sein sollten. So ist nicht ausgeschlossen, dass auch den Käufer zivil- oder sogar strafrechtliche Konsequenzen treffen können.

Einige bei Edeka erworbene Schlüssel, für "Office Home and Student 2016" etwa, stammten aus China und dürfen deshalb weder neu noch gebraucht in Deutschland verkauft werden, berichtet "CRN". Andere Produktschlüssel sind Teil von Lizenzverträgen mit ausländischen Universitäten. Dort waren diese teils nur einmal aktiviert worden.

Durch den Verkauf dieser Schlüssel über Lizengo wurden bestimmte Softwareschlüssel nun zusätzlich bis zu 25-mal von deutschen Edeka-Kunden aktiviert – ohne dass die betroffenen Universitäten davon wussten.
Ob Kunden nun Konsequenzen drohen, erklärt ein Medienrechtsanwalt hier. Wie genau es nun für Lizengo weitergeht, entscheiden nun die Ermittlungen der Justiz und ein darauffolgender Prozess.

Laut dem Unternehmen soll der Angreifer sogar Domain-Admin-Rechte erlangt haben. Das berichtet Avast in einem Blog-Post. Nutzer mit Domain-Admin-Rechten haben die höchstmöglichen Rechte im System.

Laut Avast soll sich die IP-Adresse des Angreifers in Großbritannien befunden haben. Die Angriffe auf das Netzwerk hätten seit Mai stattgefunden. Doch erst am 23. September entdeckte Avast verdächtige Aktivitäten. Daraufhin wurden Untersuchungen mit dem tschechischen Nachrichtendienst BIS sowie einem externen Forensikteam eingeleitet.

Nicht der erste Angriffsversuch
Ziel soll der CCleaner gewesen sein. Das Programm gehört seit 2017 zu Avast. Nutzer können damit ihr Windows-System optimieren. Bereits 2017 hatten Sicherheitsforscher entdeckt, dass Unbekannte Schadsoftware in den CCleaner geschleust hatten. Mehr dazu lesen Sie hier.

Erstere sind Softwarelizenzen, die üblicherweise an den Verkauf von Hardware gekoppelt sind, etwa ein Notebook oder ein Desktop-PC. Volumenlizenzen werden oftmals an Unternehmen verkauft; hier wird etwa ein einziger Produktschlüssel vergeben, der mehrfach zur Aktivierung auf unterschiedlichen Computern genutzt werden kann.

Laut Rechtsanwalt Christian Solmecke von der Kölner Medienrechtskanzlei Wilde Beuger Solmecke "kann es legal sein, diese Keys inklusive dazugehöriger Lizenz weiterzuverkaufen". Allerdings müssten dafür bestimmte Voraussetzungen erfüllt sein:

Die Lizenz müsste etwa ursprünglich in der EU oder einem anderen Land des Europäischen Wirtschaftsraums in Umlauf gebracht worden sein. "Billige Lizenzen, die aus dem russischen oder asiatischen Raum stammen, sind hierzulande nicht legal", sagt Solmecke.
Weitere Bedingung: "Der Ersterwerber hatte eine legale, unbefristete Lizenz, für die der erste Käufer angemessen bezahlt hat", erklärt Rechtsanwalt Solmecke. Zeitlich befristete Software dürfte nicht weiterverkauft werden.

Drittens müssten alle Softwarekopien der Vorbesitzer spätestens zum Zeitpunkt des Weiterverkaufs unbrauchbar gemacht worden sein. "Hieran scheitert meist die Legalität des Keyselling: Denn um dies feststellen zu können, muss man eigentlich alle Vorerwerber kennen. Käufer müssen hier eigentlich gegenüber dem Hersteller lückenlos die gesamte vorherige Lizenzkette nachweisen können", sagt Solmecke.

Wer solche Produktschlüssel im Netz kauft, kann sich dabei zumindest an einige Anzeichen halten. Besser nicht kaufen sollte man etwa Datenträger mit selbst gedruckten Inlays oder laienhaften Beschriftungen.

Sind die Angaben hier uneindeutig oder zweifelhaft, sollte besser ebenfalls vom Kauf Abstand genommen werden, rät Christian Solmecke.

Beides trifft auf die bei Edeka verkauften Lizenzen jedoch nicht zu. Hier gilt jedoch ein weiterer Punkt: Ein "absurd niedriger Preis sollte jeden misstrauisch machen. Denn die Preise für legal verkaufte Gebraucht-Software sind gestiegen", sagt der Rechtsanwalt.

By opting for Ice Lake chips instead of Comet Lake, Microsoft chose a boost in graphics over maximum computing performance. You’ll still want discrete graphics for playing modern games at high settings, but the Intel Iris Plus integrated GPU inside the Surface Laptop 3 will do for casual gamers.

The Surface Laptop 3 played Dirt 3 (high, 1080p) at 47 frames per second, which matches the Spectre x360 13’s pace and outraces the XPS 13’s result (34 fps). As a general rule, 30 fps is the minimum for frustration-free gaming. The Surface Laptop 3’s battery life is great but short of record setting. The laptop lasted for 9 hours and 17 minutes on our battery test, which involves continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi at 150 nits.

That time tops the premium laptop average (8:39) and the 4K XPS 13’s result (7:59), but the 13-inch MacBook Pro (10:48) outlasted the Surface Laptop 3 by an hour and a half. The Spectre x360 13 might have a 1080p display, but that laptop’s 13-hour and 20-minute runtime is simply ridiculous. Surface devices have the best webcams of any Windows PC. It’s a low bar to reach. Nonetheless, I’m glad Microsoft spent a bit extra for the Surface Laptop 3’s decent 720p camera.

A selfie I snapped in our dimly lit office revealed individual hairs in my beard and the stitching in the jacket hanging over the back of my chair. The camera even captured the rosy tone in my face, which made me look healthier than I do in the unsaturated pics captured by most other laptops. Overheating is not a problem on the Surface Laptop 3. After running a 15-minute, 1080p video, the Surface Laptop 3 peaked at just 90 degrees Fahrenheit, well below our 95-degree comfort threshold. The max temp was clocked near the hinge. The rest of the laptop was even cooler, with the touchpad reaching only 81 degrees and the center of the keyboard warming to 86 degrees.

However, if we do see a consumer-ready device, we expect that it will come from Lenovo. It’s been reported that the company has set a date of Q2 2020 for its first foldable, a variation of the ThinkPad X1. Another possible contender is Microsoft, which is reportedly launching the Surface Neo sometime in Q3 2020.

As the foldable market begins to heat up, don’t think for a second that laptop manufacturers aren’t going to be looking for ways to add another screen to their setups. Right now, Asus is leading the charge with excellent laptops such as the ZenBook Pro Duo and the ZenBook 15. But we wouldn’t be surprised if we saw a lot of dual-screen concepts at the show.

AMD’s been killing it on the desktop front over the past few years. Andhe company is long overdue for a serious comeback on the mobile front. We’re pretty confident that AMD will be making some announcements regarding mobile during the company’s keynote Jan. 6.

Der Dienst Uber Pop, bei dem Privatleute in ihren Autos Passagiere gegen Entgelt herumfahren konnten, wurde schon vor einigen Jahren verboten. Mit Uber X unternahm die Firma einen neuen Anlauf, um in Deutschland Fuß zu fassen - Mietwagen, die über diese App-Funktion vermittelt wurden, sind inzwischen in Großstädten wie Berlin, Düsseldorf und Köln unterwegs.

In einem Artikel für das renommierte Wissenschaftsmagazin "Nature" beschreiben Googles Forscher, dass ihr "Sycamore" getaufter Quantenprozessor eine Testaufgabe in gerade einmal 200 Sekunden löste – ein aktueller Supercomputer hätte für dieselbe Aufgabe 10.000 Jahre Berechnungszeit benötigt, schreiben sie.

An einer nachvollziehbaren Erklärung, wie genau Quantencomputer diese Leistungen vollbringen können, scheitern selbst Experten. Nobelpreisträger Richard Feynman, einer der wichtigsten Physiker des 20. Jahrhunderts, ist bekannt für den Satz: "Wenn du glaubst, Quantenmechanik zu verstehen, dann verstehst du Quantenmechanik nicht."Das besondere an Quantencomputern ist, dass sie nicht den klassischen Naturgesetzen folgen. In einem Computer kann die kleinste Informationseinheit Bit entweder den Zustand "An" oder "Aus" oder besser gesagt "1" oder "0" annehmen. Ein Quantum-Bit oder Qubit kann hingegen auch einen Zwischenzustand annehmen, eine Superposition.

Unterschied zwischen Bits und Qubits
Es hat dann gewissermaßen gleichzeitig den Wert "1" und "0". Verkoppelt man mehrere dieser Qubits miteinander, wächst der Raum der gleichzeitig erkundbaren möglichen Lösungen exponentiell. Wenn man 333 Qubits miteinander verbinde, komme man auf eine Zahl von 1,7*10100 Berechnungszuständen, die in diese Superpositionen versetzt werden könnten, rechnet Google-Chef Sundar Pichai in einem Blogeintrag vor. Eine Eins mit 100 Nullen, diese Zahl heißt im Englischen auch "Googol", sie ist Namenspate für die Suchmaschine.

Googles Forschern gelang es, 53 Qubits zu einem Rechner zu verbinden. Schon das reichte für die Rekordrechenleistung. Allerdings ist dies nur unter höchstem technischem Aufwand machbar. Quantencomputer funktionieren aktuell nur im Vakuum und im Temperaturbereich nahe dem absoluten Nullpunkt.

Auch Pichai gibt zu, dass es noch "viele Jahre" dauern werde, bis Quantencomputer tatsächlich für eine breitere Zahl von echten Anwendungen eingesetzt werden könnten.Konkurrent IBM – dort forscht man ebenfalls an Quantencomputern – behauptet derweil, dass die durchgeführte Rechnung auf einem Supercomputer nicht 10.000 Jahre, sondern nur zweieinhalb Tage dauern würde. Google nutzte bei der simulierten Berechnung nur den Arbeitsspeicher des Supercomputers, nicht aber dessen Festspeicher, um Zwischenergebnisse zu speichern, erklärt IBM.

Immerhin, auch an quantenfesten Verschlüsselungsalgorithmen wird bereits gearbeitet. Die Zukunft des Quantencomputings wird auf jeden Fall spannend und bringt derzeit noch nicht einschätzbare Potenziale – und auch Herausforderungen – mit sich.Uber ist ein Reizwort für viele Taxifahrer in Deutschland, immer wieder klagen sie gegen das aufstrebende US-Unternehmen. Fahrdienstvermittler Uber darf seine App laut einem Gerichtsbeschluss nicht mehr zur Mietwagenvermittlung in Deutschland einsetzen. Die Umsetzung des Dienstes Uber X verstoße gegen das Personenbeförderungsgesetz, heißt es in der einstweiligen Verfügung des Landgerichts Köln. Geklagt hatte ein Kölner Taxiunternehmer.

Nun lassen sich etwa Dateien vom Rechner aufs Telefon schicken. Dazu in den Einstellungen unter "Geräte/Bluetooth & andere Geräte" die Option "Dateien per Bluetooth senden oder empfangen" anklicken, dann unter "Bluetooth-Dateiübertragung" nacheinander die Option "Dateien senden", den Namen des Smartphones und "Weiter" auswählen, gefolgt von "Durchsuchen". Nun die freizugebenden Dateien markieren und auf "Öffnen/Weiter zum Senden/Fertig stellen" klicken. Das Smartphone meldet sich dann noch einmal: Der Empfang muss kurz bestätigt werden.

Die ersten Rechner waren ja so groß wie Schränke. Heute passen leistungsstärkere Geräte in unsere Hosentasche. Wird das mit Quantencomputern mal genauso sein?Ich vermute, dass Quantencomputer auf absehbare Zeit Rechenzentrumstechnologie bleiben – allein schon wegen der nötigen Kühlleistung. Aber natürlich kann man dann über das Netz mit solchen Quantencomputing-Dienstleistungen kommunizieren. Beispielsweise kann das Smartphone als Schnittstelle zu so einem Computer dienen. Schon jetzt ist der leistungsfähigste Rechner, den wir im Alltag nutzen, vermutlich der, der uns durch den Stadtverkehr navigiert.

Noch mal zurück zum Anfang: Google-Konkurrent IBM bezweifelt, dass Google wirklich ein Durchbruch bei der Entwicklung von Quantencomputern gelungen ist. Das Unternehmen behauptet, dass ihr Superrechner Googles Aufgabe in zweieinhalb Tagen schafft – und nicht in 10.000 Jahren wie Google schreibt.

Das ganze Thema ist sehr komplex. Klar kann es auch andere Lösungen für die Aufgabe von Google geben. Aber um es kurz zu fassen: Google hat gezeigt, dass in diesem Fall keine Lösung auf einem klassischen Computer wirklich effizient ist. Und letztendlich muss man sich die Frage stellen: Wenn jetzt Google statt 53 Qubits auf 60 Qubits hochgeht, lässt sich diese Aufgabe immer noch in zweieinhalb Tagen lösen wie von IBM behauptet? Oder sind es dann schon Jahre?

Diese Aussagen sollten wir auch nicht zu hochhängen: Es ist jetzt nicht die Singularität erreicht, die alles über den Haufen schmeißt. Das Experiment wird ja gerne mit dem ersten Motorflug der Gebrüder Wright verglichen. Der galt damals als Meilenstein, auch wenn er nur 13 Sekunden lang war. Natürlich kann jetzt jemand sagen: Wenn ich mich richtig anstrenge baue ich einen Papierflieger, der ebenfalls 13 Sekunden fliegt. Doch das alles wird obsolet, sobald das nächste Flugzeug gebaut wird. Für Leute, die Quantencomputer bauen war Googles Sprung von bisher 20 Qubits auf 53 Qubits eine riesige technische Leistung. Ich denke, das sollte man auch anerkennen.

I have two complaints with the Surface Laptop 3’s screen. First, the display is way too reflective. My second criticism doesn’t have to do with the panel itself, but with the thick bezels surrounding it. At this point, nearly every premium laptop has reduced its footprint and improved its viewing experience with an edge-to-edge screen. Reducing the Laptop 3’s bezels is at the top of my wish list for 2020.

According to our colorimeter, the Surface Laptop 3’s display covers 121% of the sRGB color gamut, making this display about as vivid as the premium laptop average (122%). The Surface’s screen is more colorful than the panels on the XPS 13 (111%, 4K) and Spectre x360 13 (109%, 1080p) but not as vivid as the MacBook Pro’s screen (163%).

Reaching 348 nits of brightness, the Surface Laptop 3’s display outshined the Spectre x360’s screen (287 nits) and again came close to matching the category average (354 nits). The 13-inch displays on the XPS 13 (382 nits) and MacBook Pro (441 nits) are brighter than the Surface Laptop 3’s panel.

Apple, Dell and others have moved to low-profile key switches in order to cut tenths of an inch off their laptops’ chassis. Microsoft hasn’t — and I hope it never does. My fingers effortlessly jumped from one key to the next thanks to the Surface Laptop 3’s bouncy keys, which have surprisingly decent travel.

With a cushy, soft-touch surface and quiet, satisfying click, the Surface Laptop 3’s keyboard will be a reprieve to anyone suffering from Apple’s stiff, loud butterfly keys. Then again, comparing this keyboard to Apple’s keyboards, butterfly or scissor, would be doing it a disservice. Rather, the Surface Laptop 3’s keyboard offers a typing experience closer to that of the brilliant ThinkPad keyboard.I typed at 108 words per minute with a 95% accuracy rate on the 10FastFingers.com typing test. That is right around my 109-wpm average and matches my typical accuracy.

The 4.5 x 3-inch touchpad’s soft-touch coating felt plush against my fingers as I easily executed Windows 10 gestures, like pinch-to-zoom and three-finger swipe up to switch windows, on the Surface Laptop 3. I was worried about the Surface Laptop 3’s speakers’ placement, hidden beneath the keyboard, but my doubts disappeared the moment Billie Eilish’s smooth, clear voice filled our lab. The slow, rhythmic drums in the Grammy Award-winning artist’s song "Idontwannaobeyouanymore" hit with surprising depth, and the electric guitar was well defined, even at maximum volume. Switching tracks, the strange pops, claps and arcade noises in Glass Animals’ "Season 2 Episode 3" were nicely separated and Dave Bayley’s voice was crisp and forward.

I loaded 27 Microsoft Edge (the new Chromium version) tabs on the Surface Laptop 3 and was never slowed by lag or throttling. Armed with an Intel Core i7-1065G7 CPU and 16GB of RAM, the Surface Laptop 3 quickly loaded three 1080p YouTube videos, and I even watched Reverse2k win a round of Fortnite on Ninja’s Mixer stream with all those tabs running in the background. There was a slight delay loading the last few tabs in another batch of 10, but it didn’t bother me much.

We saw mixed results from the Surface Laptop 3 in our benchmark tests. The notebook scored a 19,078 on the Geekbench 4.3 overall performance test, losing out to the XPS 13 (Core i7-10710U). The 10th Gen Ice Lake processor in the Surface Laptop 3 helped it defeat the MacBook Pro (17,366, 8th Gen Core i5), the Spectre x360 13 (18,404, Core i7-1065G7) and the premium laptop average (16,559).

Qualcomm will be a major player in this space as the company recently unveiled its Snapdragon 7c and 8c chips. Targeting entry- and mid-level laptops, Qualcomm is looking to bring always-connected systems to mainstream consumers in a big way. However, we should also be on the lookout for Qualcomm’s 8cx processor. A 7-nanometer chip, the 8cx chip is featured in the company’s Project Limitless concept and is supposed to deliver better performance and longer battery life along with LTE connectivity. Samsung is also rumored to be working on a 5G tablet, the Galaxy Tab S6.

But don’t think 5G is going to be a Qualcomm-only affair. Intel is reportedly teaming up with MediaTek to make their own 5G laptops. Now that foldable phones are sort of a thing, it’s only natural that tablet makers are going to want a piece of the action. While we don’t think we’re going to see many (if any) consumer-ready models at CES 2020, we’re pretty confident that we’ll be seeing quite a few concepts as companies try to figure out this new medium.

In our HandBrake transcoding test, we push laptops to convert a 4K video to 1080p resolution. The Surface Laptop 3 completed that task in 24 minutes and 55 seconds, which is much slower than the times from the XPS 13 (14:25), MacBook Pro (14:42) and Spectre x360 (21:13). Even the premium laptop average (20:04) was faster.

Microsoft’s Surface lineup is getting crowded, but the 13.5-inch Surface Laptop 3 (starting at $799, reviewed at $1,299) remains an excellent option for anyone who wants a high-performing portable system that doesn’t flip, twist or detach. The few changes made to this latest model are enough to elevate it above the previous versions. First, the clamshell device was updated with 10th Gen Intel CPUs, which provide faster computing and graphics performance. The Surface Laptop 3 also comes in an all-metal chassis with fresh color options (similar to what the 15-inch Surface Laptop 3 offers), and the new USB-C port is a feature we’ve long awaited.

We’re still hoping for a Thunderbolt 3 port and thinner display bezels, and Microsoft’s egregious pricing structure puts the Surface Laptop 3’s value into question. Still, the 13.5-inch clamshell is one of the best laptops for students, business users or anyone who wants a sleek, premium system.

The base Surface Laptop 3 (available only in platinum) with a Core i5 CPU, 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD is currently on sale for $799. Another $200 will upgrade you to a 256GB SSD and expand your color options to include sandstone, cobalt blue and black.

The Surface Laptop 3 is available with either a metal or Alcantara fabric deck. Once you’ve chosen your preferred material, you can pick from among black, cobalt, platinum and sandstone color options. I’m glad Microsoft sent us the sandstone finish, because the blush hue is gorgeous.

Our Surface Laptop 3 looked like something that should be pulled out of a Gucci purse by someone wearing a rose gold Shinola watch. That is, the Surface Laptop 3 is a classy notebook with a modern design and premium materials. Do I miss the plush Alcantara fabric? Sure, but I don’t have to worry about staining or wearing down with the new aluminum option.

There are unmistakable parallels between the designs of the Surface Laptop 3 and MacBook Air. Those similarities have always existed, but the Surface Laptop 3’s new all-metal design emphasizes them. Like the MacBook Air, the Surface Laptop has a sleek, minimalist aesthetic characterized by smooth curves and clean surfaces.

The sandstone Surface Laptop 3 looks especially similar to the new gold MacBook Air. That said, I much prefer the Surface’s matching taupe keyboard to the MacBook’s ugly black one. I’m also a fan of Microsoft’s stylish mirrored logo. Microsoft prioritized form with the Surface Laptop 3 but not at the expense of function. The company made it easy to replace the laptop’s SSD, although this drive is technically still not user-replaceable.

The Surface Laptop 3 feels durable, and there’s a remarkable precision to the build quality that you notice only when you look closely at the chassis. I just wish Microsoft had trimmed down the Surface Laptop 3’s bezels in the same way the company’s competitors have done with their flagship notebooks.

Microsoft has yet to put a bad display on its Surface devices, and the Laptop 3’s 13.5-inch, 2256 x 1540-resolution panel is no exception. The touch screen is bright and vivid, and the 3:2 aspect ratio is growing on me. It’s not 4K, but the Surface Laptop 3’s screen is so detailed that the serial numbers of tiny armored plates mounted to the front of a car were discernible when I watched a trailer for F9, the upcoming Fast & Furious movie. Those iconic British double-decker buses were an appropriately punchy shade of scarlet, and the blue flames firing out of Vin Diesel’s car were the color of blueberry cotton candy in that ridiculous flying-car scene.

From there, we’re expecting to see mid- to upper-tier laptops sporting either a Ryzen CPU or a Radeon GPU. And while we’re excited at the potential of getting AMD processors in laptops, we’re more hopeful about the graphics cards. It’d be nice to have an option besides Intel and Nvidia again. If you thought Intel was done rolling out all the 10th Gen goodies, you’re definitely mistaken. The company is still working on introducing its Project Athena initiative. And that means more laptops.

Business laptops that have Intel’s vPro technology such as the HP Elite Dragonfly are forced to use 8th Gen chips because 10th Gen doesn’t support the technology...yet. We’re also waiting to see the arrival of 10th Gen H-series processors for gaming laptops. In preparation for the Xbox Series X, 343 Industries is developing a shiny new game engine called Slipspace that’s going to power Halo: Infinite. The engine will likely test the power of gaming laptops as the new Halo title is confirmed to arrive on PC.

343 Industries recently published a video on YouTube detailing some of the development of Halo: Infinite, and Halo franchise director Frank O’Connor talked about what Slipspace means for the future of Halo."We had to create an engine that was more powerful for next-generation development, but also more nimble, so the creatives and engineers are able to work more easily and iterate faster," O’Connor said in the video. "This technical groundwork is vital to build a platform for the future of Halo."

The visuals in the teaser trailer for Halo: Infinite were stunning. But if we think back to Gears 5, that game got a massive visual upgrade from Xbox to PC, so we’re expecting to see the same from Halo: Infinite. That is, if gaming laptops can keep up with next-generation console hardware.

"You have to make tools that allow you to make new features that maybe weren’t thought about," said David Berger, engineering director at 343 Industries. "You’ve gotta give the content-creators room to ideate outside of that."We’re excited to see what 343 Industries has to offer that will differentiate Halo: Infinite from the rest of the franchise, and how Infinite will differ between Xbox and PC. And it seems that 343 Industries might be close to showing off another reveal, as Halo Community Director Brian Jarrard tweeted about playtesting in his office.

While we won’t get the big picture until Halo: Infinite launches later this year, there will be beta tests before that happens. Unfortunately, Xbox will get the first taste, but PC will come later, so we’ll eventually get to compare and contrast both versions. The Tecra X50 will start at $1,544 and include a generous three-year warranty. We’ve asked Dynabook about the Tecra X50’s availability in the U.S and will update this article once we hear back.

To get you caught up, Sharp rebranded Toshiba to Dynabook after purchasing 80.1% of Toshiba Client Solutions (Toshiba’s PC unit) last year. Instead of throwing in the towel, the new brand went right back to creating new laptops, like the Portégé A30, Portégé X30 and Tecra X40 unveiled back in July. Toshiba laptops may not have had the best reputation, but the Dynabook Tecra X50 seems to have a lot going for it.

That starts with the chassis, which is made from magnesium alloy, a material that is increasingly being used as a lightweight yet durable alternative to aluminum. The Tecra X50 exemplifies those benefits with a body that weighs just 3.1 pounds but is MIL-STD-810G tested, which means it can withstand exposure to extreme conditions. We haven’t gotten our hands on a Tecra X50 yet, but we’re excited to test those durability claims and see the laptop’s Onyx Blue color in person.

Unfortunately, the Tecra X50 is powered by Intel 8th Gen CPUs (up to a Core i7-8665U), at a time when laptop makers are hurrying to release products with Intel’s new 10th Gen processors. That already puts the Tecra X50 behind competitors when it comes to performance, though the Dynabook will at least support Wi-Fi 6. Other components inside the Tecra X50 include integrated UHD 620 graphics, up to 32GB of RAM and up to a 1TB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD.

The Tecra X50 comes with plenty of features for business users, including a TPM 2.0 security chip, an optional smart card reader, an IR camera for facial authentication and a fingerprint reader embedded in the touchpad. There’s also a webcam cover so you can save on tape.

At 0.7 inches thick, there isn’t a ton of space on the Tecra X50 for ports, but we’ve seen worse. Housed on the laptop’s thin chassis are two Thunderbolt 3 inputs, a USB 3.0 port, an HDMI, a microSD card slot and a headphone jack. We’re bummed that the Tecra X50 runs on last-gen processors, but everything else about the notebook --- the lightweight yet durable chassis, long (estimated) runtime and power-efficient display --- has us excited to get one in for review.

Hier erzeugt man einzelne Ionen im Ultrahochvakuum und steuert die mit Lasern. Bei dieser Technologie ist Europa eindeutig vorne. Grundsätzlich lässt sich sagen, dass Europa in der Grundlagenforschung wichtige Beiträge gemacht hat. Zwar haben die Amerikaner schon 2010 auf angewandte Forschung umgeschaltet und wir erst 2018 mit dem Projekt "OpenSuperQ". Aber das heißt nicht, dass wir nicht mit dem Quantentechnologie-Flaggschiff aufholen können. Zumindest in den Grundlagen sind wir mit den Amerikanern auf Augenhöhe. Und in der Systemintegration holen wir jetzt auf. Schauen Sie sich das Beispiel mit den Gebrüdern Wright an: Die haben das Flugzeug zwar in den USA gebaut, Airbus wurde aber in Europa gegründet.

Das Projekt "OpenSuperQ" startete, wie Sie sagten, ja erst 2018 und soll praktisch einen Quantencomputer für Europa entwickeln. Sie selbst koordinieren das Projekt. Wie ist hier allgemein der Stand?

Unser Netzwerk hatte in einem Jahr einen sehr guten Start und wir haben alle unsere Meilensteine erreicht – ja, wir sind sogar etwas schneller als der Zeitplan. Was Fehlerraten angeht, sind wir mit Google auf Augenhöhe. Was Qubits angeht sind wir aber nicht bei 53, sondern 7. Wir haben uns vor allem auf die Systemintegration fokussiert. Das heißt: Wir haben gezeigt, dass wir einen schwedischen Chip mit Schweizer Qubits und Elektronik in einem finnischen Kryostaten bauen und mit deutscher Firmware steuern können. Jetzt wollen wir die Zahl der Qubits aggressiv erhöhen: Wir hoffen, in einem Jahr auf über 20 zu kommen. Zum Projektende im Jahr 2021 hoffen wir, zwischen 50 und 100 Qubits zu sein.

Ist ein europäisches Quantencomputerprojekt überhaupt notwendig, wenn die USA schon eins haben? Das kostet doch sicher auch viel an Steuergeldern. Kann man hier nicht mit den Amerikanern kooperieren?

Sie sollten bei der Sache auch bedenken: Das "stabile Genie" im Weißen Haus wird wohl beginnen, wegen der Anwendung in der Kryptografie Quantencomputing als sicherheitsrelevant einzustufen. Daher ist es, glaube ich, für Europa besonders wichtig, eine unabhängige Plattform zu haben. Ein wichtiges Bauteil kam bisher aus den USA und seit kurzem gibt es darauf eine Exportbeschränkung. Doch dank der weisen Voraussicht unsere EU-Konsortiums OpenSuperQ können wir das Bauteil auch selbst herstellen. Und unsere europäischen Komponenten funktionieren jetzt fast so gut wie die amerikanischen.

Die meisten Notebooks verfügen über einen eingebauten Bluetooth-Adapter. Als Nächstes gilt es, auf das Plus-Zeichen links vom Eintrag "Bluetooth oder anderes Gerät hinzufügen". Es öffnet sich ein schwarzes Fenster, in dem man ganz oben auf den "Bluetooth"-Eintrag klicken muss.

Zwei, die sich suchen – und finden
Jetzt heißt es abwarten, bis sich Rechner und Telefon gefunden haben. Erscheint der Name oder die Modellbezeichnung des Smartphones, noch einmal darauf klicken, dann "Verbinden" auswählen. Anschließend gibt es auf dem Smartphone-Display einen Hinweis auf den Kopplungsversuch, den man absegnen muss. In den Einstellungen unter "Geräte/Bluetooth und andere Geräte" findet sich nun ein fester Eintrag für das Telefon.

Quantencomputer rechnen nicht mit gewöhnlichen Bits, sondern mit sogenannten Quanten-Bits (QUBits). Während gewöhnliche Bits entweder nur eine "0" oder eine "1" sein können, können Qubits auch einen Zwischenzustand einnehmen – eine sogenannte Superposition.

Es wäre jetzt aber zu einfach zu sagen, dass man mit einem Quantencomputer zum Beispiel sämtliche Steuerbescheide beim Finanzamt parallel verarbeiten könnte. Denn wegen des Wahrscheinlichkeitscharakteres der Quantenphysik müssen wir Algorithmen programmieren, die am Ende auch ein Ergebnis ausspucken. Das ist besonders knifflig. Für ein paar Aufgabenstellungen ist das aber bereits gelöst: Datenbanksuche, Optimierung, Kryptoanalyse oder theoretische Chemie.

Was bedeutet das genau? Wo können Quantencomputer uns im Alltag helfen?Ein Bereich wären Optimierungsaufgaben, im Prinzip bei Dingen wie künstliche Intelligenz oder Maschinenlernen. Beispielsweise in Staus, wenn es darum geht, optimale Routen zu finden. Oder bei der Optimierung von Passagierströmen an Flughäfen. Das ist ein interessantes Optimierungsproblem, denn hier muss man wirklich schnell sein. Wenn ein Flugzeug verspätet reinkommt oder sich nur ein paar Passagiere am Flughafen verlaufen, kann das den ganzen Plan durcheinanderbringen.

Und klassische Rechner stoßen hierbei an ihre Grenzen?Für einen neuen Plan beim Flughafen braucht der Quantencomputer beispielsweise nicht eine Nacht, sondern schafft das potenziell in ein paar Minuten. Bei der Optimierung ist das nämlich so: Wenn ein klassischer Computer bei einer Route nur einen kleinen Umweg planen muss, kann er das ganz gut. Wenn die Route aber radikal anders sein soll, kann die Berechnung mit einem klassischen Computer sehr lange dauern. Bei so etwas muss das System nämlich viele Möglichkeiten durchprobieren.

Aber Google Maps kann doch heute schon Staus erkennen und neue Strecken innerhalb von Sekunden vorschlagen.Das kommt am Ende darauf an, wie groß die Stadt ist und wie dramatisch die Umwege sind. Manchmal fragt man sich ja, warum mir Google Maps im wilden Stadtverkehr mit spontan entstehendem Stau solche Umfahrungen vorschlägt, statt mich einfach außenrum zu schicken. Das liegt daran, dass Google Maps auf manche Dinge nicht schnell genug eingehen kann. Bei klassischen Computern ist die Wand, an der sie an ihre Grenzen bei Geschwindigkeiten stoßen, wirklich steil. Und: Je mehr Daten so ein Rechner verarbeiten muss, desto größer muss er im Endeffekt sein. Bei Quantencomputern reicht es aber, wenn sie für eine vergleichbare Aufgabe nur ein wenig größer gebaut werden als ein Modell, das dort vielleicht Probleme hatte.

In der Community hat man sich über den Energieverbrauch noch wenig Gedanken gemacht. Im Endeffekt können Quantencomputer aber energieschonender arbeiten als Supercomputer – auch trotz der Kühlleistung, die die Geräte brauchen. Das liegt unter anderem daran, dass ein Quantencomputer viele Informationen in wenigen Quantenbits speichern kann.

Haben Quantencomputer auch andere Vorteile?Wichtig ist auch, dass solche Rechner Prozesse in der Chemie optimieren können. Das wird vermutlich die erste Anwendung von Quantencomputern sein, da man hier ein Quantensystem mit einem anderen simulieren kann. Selbst mit eingeschränkter Hardware kann man hier schon viel machen. Ein Beispiel wäre hier der Herstellungsprozess von Düngern. Sie müssen sich dabei auch klarmachen, dass die Herstellung von Stichkstoffdünger etwa drei Prozent des menschengemachten CO2-Ausstosses ausmacht.

Die Gefahr, halte ich für sehr, sehr gering. Es gibt gelegentlich Leute, die in Publikationen behaupten, dass das menschliche Bewusstsein sich nur mit Quantenphysik erklären lasse. Die werden in der wissenschaftlichen Community aus gutem Grund nicht erst genommen: Denn Quantencomputer funktionieren entweder bei Tiefstemperaturen oder im Ultrahochvakuum. Ihr Gehirn befindet sich aber weder in einer Kältekammer noch in einem Ultrahochvakuum. Quantenphysik und Bewusstsein haben also nichts miteinander zu tun. Mit Quantencomputern lassen sich aber kleine und mittelgroße KI-Aufgaben effizienter gestalten – wie das Beispiel mit dem Flughafen oder den Staus. Aber auch im Bereich des autonomen Fahrens können solche Rechner eingesetzt werden, wenn es darum geht, dass schnell Entscheidungen getroffen werden müssen. Das sind jetzt KI-Aufgaben, die ethisch wenig kritisch sind. Aber dennoch sollten wir uns bewusst machen, dass da auch da ein bisschen Regulierungsbedarf besteht.

Hierzu muss man auch wissen, wie sich die gängige Verschlüsselungsmethode – das RSA-Verfahren – knacken lässt. Dazu nimmt man eine ganze Zahl und zerlegt sie in Primfaktoren. Wenn die Zahl jetzt 2.000 Stellen hat, ist das auch mit den besten Algorithmen sehr aufwendig zu knacken. Solche Algorithmen gibt es auch für Quantencomputer und es ist bewiesen, dass sie funktionieren. Quantencomputer können das RSA-Verfahren also im Prinzip entschlüsseln – und das schneller als ein klassischer Rechner. Jedoch brauchen Sie dazu einen Quantencomputer mit einer enorm geringen Fehlerrate. Bei Googles Experiment lag die Fehlerrate beispielsweise bei einem halben Prozent.

Das klingt aber nach ganz schön wenig.Nach aktuellem Stand der Technik ist das sensationell gut. Aber für die Kryptoanalyse ist das immer noch zu schlecht. Da bräuchten wir zehn hoch Minus 12, also die zwölfte Nachkommastelle ist da keine null mehr.

Wir haben für das Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik abgeschätzt, ab wann das Ganze interessant werden könnte: Wenn die Fehlerrate jetzt nochmal eine Runde besser werden würde, bräuchten wir eine Milliarde Qubits mit aktiver Fehlerkorrektur, um tatsächlich das RSA-Verfahren entschlüsseln zu können. Googles Chip hatte 53. Die Nutzer müssen also erstmal keine Panik haben. Aber so langsam sollten wir uns darauf einstellen, quantensichere Kryptografie zu etablieren.

Können Quantencomputer auch abseits der Kryptografie nützlich sein?Quantencomputer können besonders gut mehrere Daten parallel bearbeiten. Das liegt an den Gesetzen der Quantenmechanik. Die besagen, dass ein Objekt an mehreren Orten gleichzeitig sein kann. Moderne Rechner können im Grunde auch mehrere Daten parallel bearbeiten. Aber für jeden Datenstrang brauchen wir hier einen neuen Prozessorkern. Viele kennen das sicher von Handy- oder Laptopangeboten: Hier steht oft, wie viele Kerne der Prozessor hat – meistens sind das vier oder acht. Bei einem Supercomputer – wie er in Jülich steht – haben wir dagegen tausende Module mit Acht-Kern-Prozessoren.
