In our Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 review, we loved its elegant premium design and sharp, vivid display. Though it lacks Thunderbolt 3 ports, we awarded it Editor’s Choice for it good performance, decent battery life and comfortable keyboard. Design-wise, the Surface Laptop 3 is a classy notebook with a modern design and premium materials. At 12.1 x 8.8 x 0.6-inches and a weight of 2.9 pounds, the Surface Laptop 3 is larger and heavier than the Dell XPS 13 (11.9 x 8.8 x 0.5 inches, 2.7 pounds), the Apple MacBook Pro (12 x 8.4 x 0.6 inches, 3 pounds) and the HP Spectre x360 13 (12.1 x 7.7 x 0.7 inches, 2.7 pounds).

Port-wise, like most 13-inch laptops, the Surface Laptop 3’s selection is modest. It has a magnetic Surface Connect port, a USB 3.1 Type-A port and a USB Type-C input. There’s also a headphone/mic jack built-in for your must have peripherals. With its 10th-gen chip and all-metal finish, the Surface Laptop 3 is a worthy successor to the Surface Laptop 2. At $200 off, it’s a solid deal if refined hardware and Windows 10 power are what you look for in a laptop.

If you need more horsepower, the Surface Laptop 3 with Core i7-1065G7 CPU and 16GB of RAM is also on sale for $1,299 ($300 off) at Best Buy. Lenovo’s ThinkPad X1 Carbon is a great alternative to popular 13-inch laptops, like the Dell XPS 13 or HP Spectre x360 13. But the 14-inch business machine isn’t a direct competitor to those smaller devices. Now Lenovo is entering the premium and portable segment in earnest with the new ThinkPad X13 and ThinkPad X13 Yoga.

Originally meant to debut at the now-cancelled MWC 2020, the ThinkPad X13 and ThinkPad X13 Yoga are a duo of laptops fighting for the coveted title of best 13-inch laptops. As their names suggest, the ThinkPad X13 is a traditional clamshell laptop whereas the X13 Yoga is a convertible system. We haven’t seen the devices in person but product images show pretty thick display bezels. Lenovo hasn’t embraced the edge-to-edge display like other vendors. As a result, some of its laptops are starting to look dated.

As a 2-in-1, the X13 Yoga can fold back into a tablet or stand in tent mode for presentations or content viewing. The Yoga even comes with an integrated stylus. The clamshell ThinkPad X13 isn’t as flexible, but the screen still rotates 180-degrees. As is standard for ThinkPad laptops, the X13 and X13 Yoga are MIL-STD 810G tested, which means they can withstand extreme conditions, like high temperatures, altitude or humidity. When it comes to security, the ThinkPad X13 and X13 Yoga pack an IR camera with ThinkShutter webcam cover, a fingerprint sensor, an optional ePrivacy screen, and a dTPM 2.0 encryption chip.

At 2.9 pounds, these two laptops are fairly lightweight, although the lightest of 13-inch devices go down to 2-pounds flat. And at 12.2 x 8.6 x 0.6 inches, the X13 Yoga is pretty sleek, and actually thinner than the ThinkPad X13 (0.7 inches).On the low end is a 13.3-inch, 1080p non-touch display with 300 nits of brightness. From there, you can upgrade to a touch screen panel with 300 nits on the ThinkPad X13 or 400 nits on the X13 Yoga.

There is also a 1080p Privacy Guard panel with 500 nits of brightness available on both the X13 and X13 Yoga. This display has a built-in privacy filter that limits viewing angles so the people around you can’t peek at your sensitive documents. Only the ThinkPad X13 Yoga comes with an optional 13.3-inch, 4K OLED touch screen with an anti-glare finish.

The ThinkPad X13 is highly customizable. Equipped with a Core i3 CPU and 4GB of RAM, the base model X13 is pretty disappointing.Fortunately, you can upgrade those components to an Intel Core i7 CPU with vPro, up to 32GB of RAM and up to 2TB of storage.The X13 Yoga starts with more agreeable specs, including a Core i5 CPU and 8GB of RAM. Specs top out at a Core i7 with vPro CPU and a 2TB SSD but RAM stops short at 16GB.

Lenovo says the Thinkpad X13 and X13 Yoga will launch with AMD’s new Ryzen Pro 4000-series processors, which we’re dying to test and compare to Intel’s 10th Gen CPUs. If Lenovo can bring everything we love about its other ThinkPad laptops --- a durable chassis, comfortable keyboard and useful security feature --- to a smaller, 13-inch design, then the XPS 13s and MacBook Pros of this world will be under some serious pressure.

These always-connected laptops will be faster than anything we’ve seen before and can act as a hotspot in a pinch. While we’ve gotten glimpses of some notebooks like the beautiful Galaxy Book S, we’re expecting to see a lot more options. Heck, there’s even a rumor that Apple will be joining the fray with 5G MacBooks.

"You have to make tools that allow you to make new features that maybe weren’t thought about," said David Berger, engineering director at 343 Industries. "You’ve gotta give the content-creators room to ideate outside of that."We’re excited to see what 343 Industries has to offer that will differentiate Halo: Infinite from the rest of the franchise, and how Infinite will differ between Xbox and PC. And it seems that 343 Industries might be close to showing off another reveal, as Halo Community Director Brian Jarrard tweeted about playtesting in his office.

If you constantly find your laptop’s battery running low before it should, there’s a chance that one of the apps you rely on is a bigger power hog than you realize. Fortunately, the Windows Battery Saver utility can show you how your battery usage breaks down. While the Chrome browser has a long history of draining batteries, there are other resource hogs that aren’t as famous, and this utility will help you find them. Battery saver will also allow you to regulate which apps can be active in the background.

5. Select Battery use to see how your battery usage breaks down, app by app. If you want to limit background activity for all apps, turn the Battery saver switch to the On position. 6. Select an app. At the top of this screen, you can see how your battery usage is split between System, Display and Wi-Fi. If Display has an especially large percentage, you will need to lower your brightness setting to regain battery life.

8. Turn the "Allow this app to run in the background" switch to the off position so it will eat less of your battery life. Now you’re more informed about which apps drain your battery, and how to rein them in. Best of luck keeping your battery’s charge filled.

Microsoft’s Surface Laptop 3 gives Apple’s MacBook Air a run for its proverbial money. Like the MacBook Air, the Surface Laptop has a sleek, minimalist aesthetic characterized by smooth curves and clean surfaces. However, Microsoft’s laptop blows away the MacBook Air when it comes to specs.This Surface Laptop 3 includes a 13.5-inch (2256 x 1504) display, a 10th-gen Core i5-1035G7 CPU, 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD.

Super-slim frames, 5G connectivity and foldables, CES 2020 was packed full of goodies. We explored the massive convention center, visited every private suite and attended every press event to find the best the biggest tech event of the year has to offer. And the future looks very bright for portable computing, as Chromebooks get a lot more advanced, laptop screens fold in half and designs get more durable. Some of these machines have a very good chance of landing on our best laptop list once they are released.

We were particularly excited by one particular concept that should very much not remain a concept. So without further adieu, here is our list of the best laptops of CES.While Dell came straight out of the gate stating the Concept UFO is in fact a concept, it is one of the more fully-realized products that we’ve seen at CES 2020. In its simplest form, the Concept UFO is a Windows 10 gaming tablet with detachable controllers. But big picture, the Concept UFO fills the current gap in PC gaming, which is being able to continue to game seamlessly on the go after you leave your gaming laptop or desktop. So in purpose alone, the Concept UFO is important, but its execution is what pushes it over the edge. It’s super comfortable to hold thanks to its ergonomic grips; the joysticks are reminiscent of an Xbox One Controller; and games ran pretty smooth on its vibrant 8-inch, 1920 x 1200 display. It basically makes the Nintendo Switch look like a toy. — Rami Tabari

Long live the king. It’s not one sweeping change, but a host of incremental improvements that catapulted Dell to take the best laptop of CES 2020. First off, the XPS 13 is now virtually bezel-less, thanks to Dell’s InfinityEdge design. That means the company squeezed a 13.4-inch display into an 11-inch form factor. Plus, through some feat of engineering, the company managed to shrink the laptop’s dimensions, making it 2% smaller than its predecessor. Overall, the new Dell XPS 13 is an exercise in attention to detail, improving the notebook in a bunch of small ways that add up to a big leap for the system. — Sherri L. Smith

The ThinkPad X1 Fold is the world’s first PC with a foldable display. Developed over four years, the ThinkPad X1 Fold has a polish you don’t find in first-gen devices. Its refined design is made of a combination of leather, magnesium and silicon. Those materials come together in a package that is both beautiful and durable. Of course, the spotlight falls on the ThinkPad X1 Fold’s flexible 13.3-inch, 2K OLED display that folds so that you can use it as two screens or expands to its full size for viewing content. When closed, the ThinkPad X1 Fold is about the size of a notebook, making it easier to carry around than a regular clamshell laptop. Lenovo is taking a risk by releasing the ThinkPad X1 Fold with Windows 10 Pro instead of the upcoming Windows 10 X that’s designed for foldables. Samsung’s Galaxy Chromebook is in a class of its own. The premium laptop is the first Chromebook with an AMOLED display. It’s the world’s thinnest Chromebook, at 0.4 inches. And it’s the first Chromebook with Intel’s new 10th Gen processors. The Galaxy Chromebook’s 13.3-inch, 4K AMOLED panel is mesmerizing. We stood mouths agape staring at its vivid colors and exceptionally detailed picture. Only the Galaxy Chromebook’s razor-thin chassis with its fiery Fiesta Red finish could take our eyes off the panel. It gets even better because Samsung somehow fit a 10th Gen Intel U-series processor in the laptop’s fanless design. The $999 Galaxy Chromebook is an important step forward for Samsung and Google. Not only does it prove that Samsung can be a force in a space where it has historically struggled, but also that Chrome OS can be a vehicle for hardware innovation. — Phillip Tracy

One of my favorite laptops, the HP Spectre x360, is back with a much needed upgrade. I’m not talking about its 10th Gen CPU or its latest Nvidia graphics, but I’m talking about its swanky haircut (aka its super slim bezels). Of course, the narrow bezels aren’t just important to make the screen look better, but it also makes the footprint smaller -- 13% smaller in fact. To top that off, HP has invested its time in developing a low wattage OLED panel to net some additional battery life out of this beast. For context, the previous HP Spectre x360 (15-inch, OLED) lasted 7 hours and 46 minutes on a charge, so if it’s able to get even an additional 30 minutes, that would be a welcome boost. By addressing the only two complaintsI had with the original, the Spectre x360 could be on its way to becoming one of the best laptops of 2020. — Rami Tabari

MSI means business. After years of complaints about its gaming laptop’s battery life, the company has taken over-the-top measures and I love it. The company added a 99.9 watt-hour battery to the new MSI GS66 Stealth’s 0.8-inch all-aluminum chassis. In case you didn’t know, it’s the largest battery the TSA will allow. Kunden klagten hier über mechanische Probleme. Beim Druck auf die Buchstabentaste passierte zuweilen nichts, manchmal erschienen Buchstaben doppelt. Schon wenige Staubkörner zwischen den Tasten reichen gelegentlich aus, um die Funktion zu beeinträchtigen. Apple zeigte sich zwar bei der Reparatur der betroffenen Geräte in der Regel kulant, trotzdem waren die Kunden genervt.

Tschüss Butterfly-Keyboard, hallo Magic Keyboard
Nach mehreren Verbesserungsversuchen ist nun Schluss mit der Butterfly-Tastatur. Das neue MacBook Pro kommt mit einem völlig neu gestalteten Keyboard. Das "Magic Keyboard" orientiert sich am Design der bewährten Tastatur des iMac Pro. Im ersten Kurztest hinterlässt es einen guten Eindruck mit schnellen und flüssigen Eingaben.

Beim Neu-Design der Tastatur ist Apple auch auf die wichtige Kundengruppe der Software-Entwickler zugegangen. Sie erhalten nun links neben der TouchBar, einem flachen Display mit virtuellen Tasten, wieder eine echte ESC-Taste.

Sechs Lautsprecher für ungeahnten Klang
Ein riesiger Unterschied zum Vorgänger-Modell lässt sich beim Klang feststellen. Sechs Lautsprecher liefern eine – bei Notebooks bislang unbekannte – Klangqualität mit sattem und breitem Stereoklang und einem vollen Bass. Dank eins ausgeklügelten Systems sorgt neutralisieren die einzelnen Lautsprecher untereinander Vibrationen. Dadurch scheppert das Gehäuse nicht.

Auch beim Sound-Input legt Apple die Messlatte höher: Drei Mikrofone zeichnen den Ton quasi in Studioqualität auf. Hintergrundgeräusche werden weitgehend ausgeblendet. Paul Ripke, der sich unter anderem als Fotograf der Deutschen Fußball-Nationalmannschaft ein Namen gemacht hat, zeigte sich nach einem ersten Test direkt nach der Vorstellung in New York begeistert.

Video-Profis wie Ripke profitieren beim neuen MacBook Pro nicht nur vom größeren Bildschirm (16 statt 15 Zoll, 3.072 zu 1.920 Pixel), sondern auch von neuen Speicheroptionen: Das Gerät kann bis zu 64 Gigabyte (GB) Hauptspeicher aufnehmen. Mit 512 GB und 1 Terabyte (TB) sind die SSD-Speicher in beiden Standardkonfigurationen doppelt so groß als beim bisherigen 15-Zoller. Maximal sind 8 TB SSD-Speicher möglich.

Wer zu Hause einen alten Router nutzt, könnte demnächst Probleme bekommen, seinen Windows-10-Rechner mit dem WLAN zu verbinden. Hintergrund ist eine Vorsichtsmaßnahme: Microsoft stuft bestimmte Funkverbindungen als unsicher ein und blockiert sie. Das Problem lässt sich leicht beheben. In Zukunft können Windows 10-Nutzer sich nicht mehr mit einem WLAN verbinden, das die Verschlüsselung WEP oder TKIP nutzt. Das berichten verschiedene Medien.

WEP steht für "Wired Equivalent Privacy". Dabei handelt es sich um die älteste WLAN-Verschlüsselung. Der Standard gilt heutzutage als besonders unsicher und sollte generell nicht mehr verwendet werden. Angreifer können bereits mit wenigen Handgriffen eine WLAN mit WEP-Verschlüsselung knacken. Auch existieren Tools, die eine Attacke erleichtern.

TKIP steht für "Temporal Key Integrity Protocol" und gilt als Alternative zu WEP. Auch zu diesem Standard sind heute viele Schwachstellen bekannt. Beide Verschlüsselungen können beispielsweise noch bei älteren Routern verwendet werden.

Wie Sie die Verschlüsselung im Router umstellen
Microsoft warnt Nutzer bereits seit dem Mai-Update für Windows 10, dass das System sich "in einem zukünftigen Release" nicht mehr mit Routern mit WPA- oder TKIP-Verschlüsselung verbinden werde. Nutzer sollen stattdessen auf ihren Routern die WPA2 oder WPA3-Verschlüsselung einstellen. Mehr zu WPA3 lesen Sie hier. Die Verschlüsselung können Sie im Menü Ihres Routers ändern. Öffnen Sie dafür einen Browser und geben Sie die IP-Adresse Ihres Routers ein. Für gewöhnlich lautet diese 192.168.0.1 oder 192.168.1.1. Bei einer Fritzbox lautet die Adresse 192.168.178.1, in der Regel können Sie auch "http://fritz.box" eintippen. Loggen Sie sich nun mit Ihren Nutzerdaten ein. Diese finden Sie für gewöhnlich auf Ihrem Router oder in der Gebrauchsanweisung zum Gerät.

Der Nutzer muss mit dem Microsoft-Browser nur eine manipulierte Webseite aufrufen, die auf dem Rechner einen Speicherfehler provoziert und so Angreifern Tür und Tor zum Einschleusen von Schadcode öffnet, beschreibt Microsoft die Sicherheitslücke.

That time tops the premium laptop average (8:39) and the 4K XPS 13’s result (7:59), but the 13-inch MacBook Pro (10:48) outlasted the Surface Laptop 3 by an hour and a half. The Spectre x360 13 might have a 1080p display, but that laptop’s 13-hour and 20-minute runtime is simply ridiculous. Surface devices have the best webcams of any Windows PC. It’s a low bar to reach. Nonetheless, I’m glad Microsoft spent a bit extra for the Surface Laptop 3’s decent 720p camera.

A selfie I snapped in our dimly lit office revealed individual hairs in my beard and the stitching in the jacket hanging over the back of my chair. The camera even captured the rosy tone in my face, which made me look healthier than I do in the unsaturated pics captured by most other laptops. There was still some visual noise in the selfie I snapped, so you would still benefit from buying a good external camera.

Overheating is not a problem on the Surface Laptop 3. After running a 15-minute, 1080p video, the Surface Laptop 3 peaked at just 90 degrees Fahrenheit, well below our 95-degree comfort threshold. The max temp was clocked near the hinge. The rest of the laptop was even cooler, with the touchpad reaching only 81 degrees and the center of the keyboard warming to 86 degrees.

343 Industries recently published a video on YouTube detailing some of the development of Halo: Infinite, and Halo franchise director Frank O’Connor talked about what Slipspace means for the future of Halo."We had to create an engine that was more powerful for next-generation development, but also more nimble, so the creatives and engineers are able to work more easily and iterate faster," O’Connor said in the video. "This technical groundwork is vital to build a platform for the future of Halo."

The 4.5 x 3-inch touchpad’s soft-touch coating felt plush against my fingers as I easily executed Windows 10 gestures, like pinch-to-zoom and three-finger swipe up to switch windows, on the Surface Laptop 3.I was worried about the Surface Laptop 3’s speakers’ placement, hidden beneath the keyboard, but my doubts disappeared the moment Billie Eilish’s smooth, clear voice filled our lab. The slow, rhythmic drums in the Grammy Award-winning artist’s song "Idontwannaobeyouanymore" hit with surprising depth, and the electric guitar was well defined, even at maximum volume. Switching tracks, the strange pops, claps and arcade noises in Glass Animals’ "Season 2 Episode 3" were nicely separated and Dave Bayley’s voice was crisp and forward.

I loaded 27 Microsoft Edge (the new Chromium version) tabs on the Surface Laptop 3 and was never slowed by lag or throttling. Armed with an Intel Core i7-1065G7 CPU and 16GB of RAM, the Surface Laptop 3 quickly loaded three 1080p YouTube videos, and I even watched Reverse2k win a round of Fortnite on Ninja’s Mixer stream with all those tabs running in the background. There was a slight delay loading the last few tabs in another batch of 10, but it didn’t bother me much.

We saw mixed results from the Surface Laptop 3 in our benchmark tests. The notebook scored a 19,078 on the Geekbench 4.3 overall performance test, losing out to the XPS 13 (Core i7-10710U). The 10th Gen Ice Lake processor in the Surface Laptop 3 helped it defeat the MacBook Pro (17,366, 8th Gen Core i5), the Spectre x360 13 (18,404, Core i7-1065G7) and the premium laptop average (16,559).

In our HandBrake transcoding test, we push laptops to convert a 4K video to 1080p resolution. The Surface Laptop 3 completed that task in 24 minutes and 55 seconds, which is much slower than the times from the XPS 13 (14:25), MacBook Pro (14:42) and Spectre x360 (21:13). Even the premium laptop average (20:04) was faster.

Microsoft must have gotten the memo about its slow hard drives. The 256GB M.2 PCIe SSD inside our unit duplicated 4.97GB of multimedia files in 9.4 seconds, for a rate of 541.4 megabytes per second. That’s quicker than showings by the storage in previous Surface devices and the Spectre x360 13 (318.1 MBps), although it still doesn’t top results from the XPS 13 (727 MBps) or the MacBook Pro (1,220 MBps, 128GB SSD) or the premium laptop average (580.56 MBps).

Another $200 will upgrade you to a 256GB SSD and expand your color options to include sandstone, cobalt blue and black. For $1,299, you can get our review unit with a Core i7-1065G7 CPU, 16GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. Doubling storage to 512GB raises the price to $1,699. Ouch.

There is a configuration with a Core i7, 16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD that sells for $2,099, or $350 more than a 4K XPS 13 with similar specs. The Surface Laptop 3 is available with either a metal or Alcantara fabric deck. Once you’ve chosen your preferred material, you can pick from among black, cobalt, platinum and sandstone color options. Our Surface Laptop 3 looked like something that should be pulled out of a Gucci purse by someone wearing a rose gold Shinola watch. That is, the Surface Laptop 3 is a classy notebook with a modern design and premium materials. Do I miss the plush Alcantara fabric? Sure, but I don’t have to worry about staining or wearing down with the new aluminum option. There are unmistakable parallels between the designs of the Surface Laptop 3 and MacBook Air. Those similarities have always existed, but the Surface Laptop 3’s new all-metal design emphasizes them. Like the MacBook Air, the Surface Laptop has a sleek, minimalist aesthetic characterized by smooth curves and clean surfaces.

The sandstone Surface Laptop 3 looks especially similar to the new gold MacBook Air. That said, I much prefer the Surface’s matching taupe keyboard to the MacBook’s ugly black one. I’m also a fan of Microsoft’s stylish mirrored logo. Microsoft prioritized form with the Surface Laptop 3 but not at the expense of function. The company made it easy to replace the laptop’s SSD, although this drive is technically still not user-replaceable.

The Surface Laptop 3 feels durable, and there’s a remarkable precision to the build quality that you notice only when you look closely at the chassis. I just wish Microsoft had trimmed down the Surface Laptop 3’s bezels in the same way the company’s competitors have done with their flagship notebooks. At 12.1 x 8.8 x 0.6 inches and 2.9 pounds, the Surface Laptop 3 is larger and heavier than other 13-inch laptops, including the Dell XPS 13 (11.9 x 8.8 x 0.5 inches, 2.7 pounds), the Apple MacBook Pro (12 x 8.4 x 0.6 inches, 3 pounds) and the HP Spectre x360 13 (12.1 x 7.7 x 0.7 inches, 2.7 pounds).

Microsoft has yet to put a bad display on its Surface devices, and the Laptop 3’s 13.5-inch, 2256 x 1540-resolution panel is no exception. The touch screen is bright and vivid, and the 3:2 aspect ratio is growing on me. It’s not 4K, but the Surface Laptop 3’s screen is so detailed that the serial numbers of tiny armored plates mounted to the front of a car were discernible when I watched a trailer for F9, the upcoming Fast & Furious movie. Those iconic British double-decker buses were an appropriately punchy shade of scarlet, and the blue flames firing out of Vin Diesel’s car were the color of blueberry cotton candy in that ridiculous flying-car scene.

I have two complaints with the Surface Laptop 3’s screen. First, the display is way too reflective. My second criticism doesn’t have to do with the panel itself, but with the thick bezels surrounding it. At this point, nearly every premium laptop has reduced its footprint and improved its viewing experience with an edge-to-edge screen. Reducing the Laptop 3’s bezels is at the top of my wish list for 2020.

According to our colorimeter, the Surface Laptop 3’s display covers 121% of the sRGB color gamut, making this display about as vivid as the premium laptop average (122%). The Surface’s screen is more colorful than the panels on the XPS 13 (111%, 4K) and Spectre x360 13 (109%, 1080p) but not as vivid as the MacBook Pro’s screen (163%). Reaching 348 nits of brightness, the Surface Laptop 3’s display outshined the Spectre x360’s screen (287 nits) and again came close to matching the category average (354 nits). The 13-inch displays on the XPS 13 (382 nits) and MacBook Pro (441 nits) are brighter than the Surface Laptop 3’s panel.

Gleichzeitig kann es euch aber auch helfen, die Lebensdauer der Handy-Batterie zu verlängern, indem es euch alarmiert, sobald der Akku zu 80 % aufgeladen ist. Angeblich soll diese Grenze dafür sorgen, dass die Akku-Lebensdauer verdoppelt wird. Ob das stimmt, werdet ihr aber vermutlich mit dieser App genauso wenig klären, wie die Frage, ob man sein Akku über Nacht laden soll.

Für iPhone und iPad könnt ihr die App „Akku & Batterie HD+ Monitor“ ausprobieren, die ebenfalls den Akku-Verbrauch testet und euch anzeigt, wie hoch der Verbrauch und die zu erwartenden Aktionszeiten sind.

Teileweise kann man Notebook-Akkus testen, indem man sie entnimmt und an ein Testgerät anschließt. Aber auch eingebaute Akkus könnt ihr checken. Dazu bringt Windows ein eigenes Programm namens „powercfg“ mit, das ihr so starten könnt, dass es euch einen ausführlichen HTML-Report generiert. Ihr müsst lediglich eine Kommandozeile öffnen und das Tool starten.

So testet ihr euren Laptop-Akku:
Klickt auf den Start-Button und gebt in das Suchfeld den Befehl cmd ein.
Wird euch Eingabeaufforderung oder exe angezeigt, klickt mit der rechten Maustaste darauf und wählt aus dem Kontextmenü die Option „Als Administrator ausführen“.

Den Dateipfad und -Namen am Ende könnt ihr natürlich selbst bestimmen. Es dauert rund 60 Sekunden, während derer das System den Akku und eure Energieeinstellungen überprüft. Am Ende könnt ihr die HTML-Datei am angegebenen Ort mit einem Doppelklick aufrufen und im Browser betrachten.Wechsel-Akkus haben Kontaktflächen, die man einsetzen kann, um die Ladekapazität zu untersuchen. So bekommt ihr bei Amazon beispielsweise einen Digitalen Batterietester für 6,99 Euro*, der neben herkömmlichen Batterien natürlich auch Akkus untersucht.

Das kleine Gerät testet Akkus aller Größen und Bauweisen und zeigt euch den Ladezustand in Volt an. Damit könnt ihr unter anderem feststellen, ob eure Akkus beim Ladevorgang auch vollständig geladen werden und wie schnell sie ihre Ladung wieder verlieren.

Letztlich könnt ihr damit aber nur dann etwas anfangen, wenn ihr diese Akku-Tests mehrmals wiederholt und protokolliert. Erst wenn ihr in eurer Liste seht, dass ein Akku mit der Zeit immer mehr an Kapazität einbüßt, wisst ihr wirklich, ob ein Austausch nötig ist.
Elektroschrott ist Sondermüll, weil er teils giftig und teils wertvoll ist. Ihn in den Hausmüll zu werfen, ist verboten, doch wohin soll der Elektroschrott? Per Post verschicken? – Ja, ernsthaft! Wir zeigen euch auch, wer Großgeräte annimmt und wie ihr entsprechende Wertstoffhöfe findet.

Natürlich kann der Kabelbruch auch weiter vorne im Kabel liegen oder euer Netzteil keine LED besitzen. Hier hilft euch nur noch ein Multimeter*, um zu überprüfen, ob der „Saft“ auch am Anschlusskabel ankommt.
Wenn ihr kein Multimeter besitzt bzw. euch damit nicht auskennt, kann euch für gewöhnlich auch der Elektroniker eures Vertrauens weiterhelfen. Meistens sogar für Umme.

Um zu überprüfen, ob möglicherweise ein defektes Peripheriegerät oder der Akku für den scheinbaren Tod des Laptops verantwortlich ist, solltet ihr einen sogenannten Hardware-Reset durchführen. Geht dazu wie folgt vor:
Schließt sämtliche Peripheriegeräte, Speicherkarten sowie das Netzteil ab und entfernt (wenn möglich) den Akku.

Haltet anschließend die Einschalttaste für wenige Sekunden gedrückt.
Schließt nun nur das Netzteil wieder an (den Akku nicht einsetzen!) und betätigt die Einschalttaste.
Wenn der Laptop jetzt startet, muss eines der angeschlossenen Geräte oder ein defekter Akku das Problem verursacht haben. Fahrt den Rechner anschließend wieder herunter und setzt den Akku ein. Startet der Laptop auch mit Akku, muss ein defektes Peripheriegeräte den Laptop am Starten gehindert haben. Wenn der Laptop dagegen mit eingesetztem Akku erneut nicht mehr hochfährt, ist dieser mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit defekt und muss durch einen neuen Akku ersetzt* werden.

Wenn auch der Hardware-Reset missglückt ist und der Laptop weiterhin streikt, könnt ihr noch die Steckverbindungen der Festplatte (HDD, SSD) und des Arbeitsspeichers überprüfen, vorausgesetzt euer Laptop besitzt eine Service-Klappe. Durch einen Sturz oder einen etwas unsanfteren Transport kann sich auch die Festplatte oder ein RAM-Riegel gelöst haben und das Problem verursachen. Um dies zu überprüfen geht ihr wie folgt vor:

Öffnet die Service-Klappe eures Laptops (oft nur mit einer oder wenigen Schrauben befestigt).
Hinweis: Ihr solltet im Idealfall immer geerdet sein, bevor ihr elektronische Bauteile berührt, um keine elekrostatische Entladung auszulösen, welche die Komponenten beschädigen könnten. Zumindest solltet ihr euch kurz zuvor einmal erden indem ihr beispielsweise einen Heirzungskörper oder den Schutzleiter einer Steckdose berührt.

Über die Wartungsklappe erreicht im Normalfall die Festplatte sowie den Arbeitsspeicher. Die Garantie geht dabei – solange ihr nichts mutwillig beschädigt - bei den meisten Herstellen nicht verloren.
Überprüft, ob HDD und RAM richtig eingesteckt sind und schließt sie wenn nötig erneut an.

Schraubt anschließend den Laptop wieder zu und probiert, ob der Laptop nun startet.

Man könnte meinen, dass das eine Schutzbehauptung ist, um von der eigentlichen Motivation abzulenken. Greenpeace und iFixit verweisen darauf, dass andere Hersteller zeigen, dass es sehr wohl anders geht: Dell, HP und Fairphone seien nämlich in Sachen Reparierbarkeit vorbildlich. Sehr gut reparierbar sei beispielsweise das HP Elite x2. Wer will, dass Apple, Samsung und LG entsprechend umdenken, kann im Rahmen der Kampagne eine Unterschriftenliste an die Hersteller unterschreiben.

Unterm Strich hilft den meisten das aber sowieso nicht, weswegen wir auch hier wieder empfehlen, das Laptop in die Hände eines fähigen Fachmanns zu geben. Falls sich das wegen des Geräte-Alters sowieso nicht lohnt, aber sich auf der Festplatte noch wichtige Daten befinden, könnt ihr sie ausbauen und mit einem Festplatten-Dock eine „externe Festplatte“ daraus machen. Solche Geräte kosten bei Amazon um die 30 Euro*. Ihr steckt einfach die ausgebaute Festplatte hinein, verbindet den Festplatten-Dock mittels USB-Kabel mit einem anderen Computer und könnt anschließend all eure Daten wie auf einer externen Festplatte erreichen. Das löst auch das Problem, eure Daten sicher zu löschen, bevor ihr das defekte Laptop entsorgt.

Leider sind die Möglichkeiten zur Selbstreparatur bei Laptops stark eingeschränkt, wenn ihr nicht gerade vom Fach oder ein guter Hobby-Elektroniker seid. Trotzdem gibt es einige Ursachen für das Problem, die man vorher auch selbst überprüfen kann – bevor man das Gerät zum Hersteller, Händler oder Fachmann bringen muss.

Zuallererst: Überprüfen, ob der Laptop doch hochfährt
Bevor ihr überprüft, warum euer Laptop nicht mehr startet, solltet ihr zuallererst sichergehen, dass er auch wirklich nicht mehr hochfährt. Möglicherweise ist nur das Display falsch eingestellt oder defekt – das Notebook fährt also trotzdem hoch, ihr seht es nur nicht.
In diesem Fall solltet ihr den Laptop versuchen zu starten und die Kontrollleuchten im Auge behalten sowie horchen, ob die Lüfter sich drehen. Wenn das der Fall ist, schaut euch folgendes Video einmal an:

Wenn der Laptop den Dienst einstellt, hantieren viele gleich am Gerät selbst herum, dabei sollte man zu allererst das Netzeil überprüfen. Da nur die wenigsten ihren Laptop stationär benutzen, ist das Gerät natürlich ständig in Bewegung und oft wird auch das Ladegerät mitgeschleppt. Natürlich ist dieses auch nicht vor einem Defekt, beispielsweise einem Kabelbruch, gefeit.

Bevor ihr euch also den Laptop genauer anschaut, solltet ihr überprüfen, ob das Netzteil überhaupt noch funktioniert. Denn wenn der Akku des Laptops alle ist und das Netzteil nicht mehr für den nötigen Strom sorgt, bleibt folglich auch der Computer aus. So überprüft ihr euer Laptop-Ladegeät:
Die meisten aktuellen Netzteile haben eine Leuchtdiode verbaut, die euch anzeigt, ob das Ladegerät aktiv ist (Grün).
Sollte die LED nicht leuchten, ist das Netzteil mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit defekt.

Auch wenn die LED in einer anderen Farbe (bspw. Rot) leuchtet, könnte ein Defekt vorliegen. Schaut dafür am besten in der Betriebsanleitung eures Laptops nach.

However, numerous online complaints say otherwise. A Google search reveals dozens of forum and Reddit posts from frustrated users asking about how to fix the Dell XPS 15’s power management issues that arise when the laptop is asleep. In one Reddit post, an XPS 15 owner says their laptop’s battery drains at 1.5% to 2% per hour, and claimed that a Dell representative said the rate was acceptable. The problems also apply to the Precision 15 5530, not just the XPS 15.

Many users are pleading with Dell to revert back to the S3 power mode as Lenovo did with the X1 Carbon following customer complaints. However, Dell has been accused of being dismissive of these issues, particularly by Notebookcheck, a tech review site that blamed Dell of being "intransigence" and diverting accountability onto users.

Dell appears to be aware of these complaints, and listed ways in which to improve battery life for those who "have a concern about battery capacity or the power consumption issue." Those suggestions include updating the latest drivers and disabling Wake on Wireless LAN, among other things.

However, if you want to squeeze out as much gaming as you possibly can, what are the consequences of putting your laptop in a battery-saving mode? One Tom’s Guide forum user asked us to help them out.To test this, we took MSI’s GT63 Titan 8RG (Core i7-8750H, 32GB of RAM, GTX 1080) and ran three gaming benchmarks on battery settings such as Best Performance (plugged and unplugged), Windows 10 Battery Saver, Nvidia’s Battery Boost and MSI’s Eco Mode.

Running Rise of the Tomb Raider on Very High 1080p settings yielded some interesting results. The Titan averaged 68 frames per second when it was plugged in, compared with about 40 fps when it was unplugged. We then ran separate tests for the Windows 10 Battery Saver and GeForce Battery Boost, and both averaged 19 fps. Meanwhile, the Dragon Center’s Eco Mode pulled a mere 15 fps.

The Titan ripped apart the Hitman benchmark (Ultra, 1080p) while plugged in, at 120 fps, but severely downgraded to 38 fps when we unplugged it. Battery Saver didn’t affect the performance much from there, as the benchmark hit 37 fps. However, Eco Mode and Battery Boost were playing with fire, at 30 fps.On the Grand Theft Auto V benchmark (Very High, 1080p), the Titan nailed 85 fps while plugged in. What was interesting was that both the unplugged Best Performance settings and Battery Boost hit 16 fps. On top of that, Eco Mode actually did better by one measly frame, for 17 fps. However, the Battery Saver mode sunk hard to 7 fps.

A lot. And ultimately, the numbers we got when the machine was unplugged were unreliable as well. If you’re playing with a gaming laptop, there’s no guarantee it’ll meet 30 fps to be playable, whether you’re on the best performance settings or using a battery-saving app. Generally, laptops with powerful GPUs like the Titan are best used with a direct power source to be fully functional. Moral of the story: Leave that sucker plugged in at all times.

According to Microsoft, the benefits of Modern Standby include faster wake times and that background activities resume even when the system is "Off." Dell also wrote about Modern Standby in a support article, claiming the feature allows the XPS 15 and Precision 15 5530 to resume from sleep faster from lower power states than they would in S3.

Dell’s post goes into more detail, explaining that this pair of laptops default to "Disconnected Standby" mode instead of the Connected Standby option that is set by Microsoft. The difference is that Disconnected Standby stops all Wi-Fi traffic, which should, in theory, reduce battery drain and overheating.

Paavolainen took a 2013 Apple Retina MacBook Pro, with screen brightness set to 50 percent, and used Google Chrome (with Adobe Flash Player disabled) to visit major English-language websites, including Forbes, New Scientist, The Guardian, The New York Times, Google, YouTube and the BBC, while recording the power draw while displaying each site.

He found is that low-power sites (consuming around 10 watts), which included Google, Forbes and the BBC, drew less than one-quarter of the power sucked down by high-power sites such as that of The New York Times, which Paavolainen measured at just under 50 watts -- not much less than an ordinary incandescent light bulb.

While Paavolainen refrained from pointing out specific causes for the New York Times website’s inefficiency, he was surprised to discover that video-streaming sites such as Vimeo and YouTube, which are often blamed for taxing batteries, required 50 percent less energy than did the Times’ site.Fifty watts is often enough to raise the temperature inside your computer, which causes the fans in your computer to spin up, leading to increased noise and using up yet more battery life.

Und eben hier ist die Entwicklung der letzten Jahre eher negativ.

Greenpeace hat sich die iFixit-Bewertungen von 40 beliebten Smartphones, Tablets und Laptops angesehen. Negativ fallen hier unter anderem Apple, Microsoft, Samsung und LG auf: Die Produkte seien teilweise so gut wie überhaupt nicht reparierbar. Die Unternehmen sorgten mit ihren jüngsten Designs dafür, dass sich dieser Trend noch verschlimmere.
So seien LGs Smartphones und Apples Laptops gerade in den letzten fünf Jahren bezüglich ihrer Reparierbarkeit immer schlechter geworden. Besonders schwer falle ins Gewicht, dass es immer mehr Geräte gebe, deren Akkus nicht oder nur sehr schwer austauschbar seien – in vielen Smartphones, aber auch in MacBooks sind Akkus mittlerweile fest mit dem Gehäuse verklebt. Ärgerlich sei auch, dass sich viele Geräte – beispielsweise auch von Apple – nicht mit normalen Werkzeugen öffnen lassen. Schließlich böten viele Hersteller keine Anleitungen oder Ersatzteile an.

Heutige MacBook bieten bereits Akku-Laufzeiten von bis zu 12 Stunden. Trotzdem geht der Akku komischerweise immer dann in die Knie, wenn gerade keine Steckdose in der Nähe ist. Mit den folgenden Akkulaufzeit-Tipps und Stromspar-Tricks für OS X Yosemite hält euer MacBook deutlich länger durch.
1. Zustand des MacBook-Akkus überprüfen

Auf dem Mac kann man den Zustand des verbauten Akkus selbst überprüfen. Es gibt sogar zwei Möglichkeiten herauszufinden, wie es um den Akku bestellt ist, wie viele Zyklen er bereits hinter sich hat und wie hoch die aktuelle Kapazität ist.
Klickt man mit gedrückter ALT-Taste auf das Akku-Symbol in der Menüleiste, bekommt man grob den Status des Akkus angezeigt. Steht hier Zustand: Normal, ist alles in Ordnung.
Mehr Informationen erhält man in den Systeminformationen. Diese öffnet man per Klick auf den Apfel in der Menüleiste. Anschließend drückt man die ALT-Taste und sieht direkt als ersten Punkt Systeminformationen und klickt darauf.

Im nun geöffneten Fenster suchen wir links den Punkt „Power“. Hier werden alle relevanten (und teilweise sehr technischen) Daten des Akkus und Stromverbrauches gelistet.
Unter dem Punkt Gesundheit sehen wir, wie viele Ladezyklen der verbaute Akku in seinem Leben bereits durchlaufen hat. Direkt darüber wird die Kapazität in Milliamperestunden angezeigt.

Seit OS X Mavericks besitzt das Mac-Betriebssystem eine Funktion, mit denen man stromfressenden Apps auf die Schliche kommen kann. Hierfür einfach auf das Akku-Symbol in der Menüleiste klicken.
Erweitert steht diese Funktion in der Aktivitätsanzeige-Applikation unter dem Reiter „Energie“ zur Verfügung. Sollte eine App regelmäßig aus der Reihe tanzen, sollte man überprüfen, ob man die aktuellste Version installiert hat. Hilft auch das nicht, so kann der Wechsel auf eine alternative App helfen.

Apropos Alternativen. Der Safari Browser von OS X Yosemite ist hardwarebeschleunigt, optimiert für OS X und die Mac-Hardware. Dadurch verbraucht der Safari-Browser deutlich weniger Strom als Chrome oder Firefox. Mehr als zwei Stunden länger hält der Akku durch, wenn man statt Chrome und Firefox den Safari-Browser verwendet. Schaut man beispielsweise Netflix im Safari, reicht die Akkuladung sogar über 3 Stunden länger, laut Apple. Das sind mal Hausnummern.

Stärkere MacBook Pros besitzen zwei Grafikeinheiten, die integrierte Grafik des Prozessors und eine dedizierte Grafikkarte. Letztere verbraucht mehr Strom als jene des Prozessor, ist aber natürlich auch leistungsstärker. Normalerweise wechselt OS X automatisch und selbstständig zwischen diesen zwei Grafikkarten hin und her, ohne dass der Nutzer etwas davon mitbekommt.
Manche Programme erzwingen die Verwendung der dedizierten Grafikkarte aber auch dann, wenn es eigentlich gar nicht notwendig wäre.

Mit Hilfe eines flachen Gegenstands, zum Beispiel einer Plastikkarte, könnt ihr nachhelfen.
Beim Auseinanderziehen kann es stellenweise knacken.
Beachtet, dass die Hälften mit einem Kabel verbunden sind, das ihr nicht beschädigen solltet.
Nun solltet ihr beide Hälften des PS4-Controllers vor euch liegen haben. Die Kabel sollten weiterhin verbunden sein.

Stellen Hersteller einen Mangel fest, müssen sie ihr Produkt umgehend zurückrufen. Verbraucher sollten dann schnell handeln: Denn weist der Hersteller nach, dass er über die einschlägigen Internetseiten sowie über die Händler informiert hat, kann das Risiko im Schadenfall beim Nutzer liegen, warnt der Verbraucherzentrale Bundesverband (vzbv).

Und Rückrufaktionen können auch Aufwand und Ärger für den Kunden bedeuten, so der vzbv. Nicht alle Hersteller nähmen gefährliche Produkt einfach zurück und ließen durch den Händler den vollen Kaufpreis erstatten. Manche bieten einen Ersatzartikel, eine Reparatur oder eine Gutschrift an. Bei einem Defekt innerhalb der zweijährigen Gewährleistungsfrist sei das ähnlich: Der Verkäufer könne Ersatz anbieten oder eine Reparatur. Bestehe der Mangel auch nach der zweiten Reparatur, könne der Käufer sein Geld zurückfordern. Eine Gutschrift muss er den Angaben nach nicht akzeptieren. Keinesfalls aber sollte er mangelhafte Produkte weiter benutzen.

Bevor ihr den Controller aufschraubt, benötigt ihr natürlich einen neuen Akku* für die PlayStation 4. Beim Kauf solltet ihr darauf achten, dass der Akku auch mit eurem Controller kompatibel ist. Häufig sind die Akku-Sets nur für die ersten drei Gamepad-Generationen ausgelegt, die ohne blauen Leuchtbalken im oberen Bereich des Touchpads auskommen. Lest daher die Beschreibung gründlich durch. Neben dem Akku benötigt ihr einen Kreuzschraubenzieher. In entsprechenden Austausch-Sets* wird meist das benötigte Werkzeug bereits mitgeliefert. Geht dann wie folgt vor:
