Ein bisschen Angst haben mir die extremen Temperaturen aber trotzdem gemacht. Zumal die Abwärme nicht nur über die Lüfter, sondern auch das Chassis abgegeben wird. Wer seinen Laptop gerne im Liegen auf seinen Beinen parkt, sollte sich nicht wundern, wenn einem nach einer langen Zock-Session die Gliedmaßen glühen.

Unter Last entwickelte sich die Kühllösung des Alienware m15 zudem zu einer echten Lärmbelästigung – nicht nur für mich, sondern auch für die Menschen in meiner unmittelbaren Umgebung. Die Lüfter sorgen nicht nur für leichte Flughafen-Atmosphäre, sondern geben in manchen Situationen ein hochfrequentes Fiepen von sich. Das Tragen eines Headsets oder Kopfhörers ist beim Spielen also unabdingbar. Das liegt auch an den verbauten Lautsprechern. Diesen fehlt es an sattem Bass und Pegel. Wirklich laut werden die Stereotreiber nie. Dafür gibt es bei maximaler Lautstärke aber auch keinerlei Tonverzerrungen oder Störgeräusche.

Alienware m15 im Test: Zum Arbeiten (fast) perfekt

Obwohl der 144-Hz-Bildschirm vor allem in Spielen sein volles Potenzial entfaltet, macht sich die höhere Bildwiederholungsrate auch während des normalen Arbeitsalltags positiv bemerkbar. Viel schneller und zielgenauer lassen sich so Icons und Buttons mit dem Cursor ansteuern. Dank der Kombination aus potentem Laptop-Prozessors und schneller PCIe-SSD werden Programme zügig geöffnet und aufgrund der kolossalen Arbeitsspeichergröße von 32 GB bleibt die Performance auch bei Dutzenden gleichzeitig geöffneten Chrome-Tabs und zahlreichen im Hintergrund laufenden Anwendungen stabil. Während des Desktop-Betriebs bleibt das Notebook zudem angenehm leise.

Während des Desktop-Betriebs blieb der Alienware m15 angenehm geräuscharm (Bildquelle: Severin Pick @ GIGA).
Die Leistung des Gaming-Laptops reicht vollkommen aus, um damit problemlos Bild- und Videobearbeitungen vorzunehmen. Auch hier werden Videoproduzierende den zusätzlichen RAM zu schätzen wissen. Das Gleiche gilt für das angenehm leichte Gewicht von 2,2 Kilogramm. Zwar ist der Alienware m15 damit immer noch schwerer als jedes Ultrabook, diese bieten aber auch nicht ansatzweise eine derart hohe Leistung. Ein absolutes No-Go stellt jedoch der fehlende SD-Karten-Slot dar. Hier muss man sich mit einem entsprechenden Adapter aushelfen.
Dank der – für einen Gaming-Laptop – dezenten Optik, kann das Notebook auch mit ins Büro genommen werden, ohne spöttische Blicke von den Kollegen zu ernten. Sogar die Beleuchtung des Alienware-Logos auf der Rückseite lässt sich per Software deaktivieren. Zudem fallen die Abmessungen trotz der potenten Hardware angenehm kompakt aus – so findet das Gerät in fast jedem Rucksack genug Platz.

Doch auch Anwender, die beruflich oder privat viel auf ihrem mobilen Rechner schreiben, werden mit dem Laptop ihre Freude haben. Die einzelnen Tasten der Chiclet-Tastatur haben eine angenehme Größe und gute Druckpunkte. Innerhalb weniger Minuten fühlte sich das Schreiben auf der RGB-Tastatur sehr natürlich an. Vertipper oder Falscheingaben gab es danach kaum noch. Lediglich die vertikalen Pfeiltasten hätten etwas größer ausfallen können. Das Gleiche gilt auch für den Nummernblock auf der rechten Seite. Dieser wirkt im Vergleich zum Rest der Tastatur etwas zusammengequetscht. Aber irgendwo muss man ja Abstriche machen, wenn einen kompakten Gaming-Laptop baut.

Auch die Bedienung des Touchpads funktionierte problemlos. Dank der leicht gummierten Oberfläche findet mein Finger jederzeit genug Halt und auch das Drücken der linken und rechten Maustaste resultierte stets in einem angenehmen Feedback. Auch die leicht dezentrale Platzierung des Touchpads störte mich während des gesamten Testzeitraumes nicht ein einziges Mal.
Die Webcam liefert grundsolide Arbeit ab, neigt bei mangelnder Beleuchtung jedoch zu starkem Rauschen. Auch bei schnellen Bewegungen gibt es keine Einbrüche in der Bildrate. Top! Von der Aufnahmequalität des Mikrofons kann man das jedoch nicht behaupten. Wenn die Lüfter einmal aufdrehen, kann man andere Geräusche in der Videoaufnahme nur noch schwer ausmachen und selbst bei optimalen Verhältnissen klingen Stimmen sehr dünn und charakterlos. Hier gibt es noch viel Luft nach oben.

Alienware m15 im Test: Akkulaufzeit und mobile Spieleleistung
Im Akkubetrieb kommt der Alienware m15 in unserem Praxis-Test (Surfen, Office-Arbeiten und gleichzeitig ein Video schauen) auf eine Akkulaufzeit von etwas mehr als 3,5 Stunden. Für einen kompletten Tag reicht nicht aus. Wer den Laptop auch unterwegs regelmäßig nutzen will, sollte also das Ladekabel dabeihaben oder statt des Standard-60-Wh-Akkus zum 90-Wh-Modell greifen.
Wer im Akkubetrieb sogar Spielen möchte, hat auf maximaler Helligkeit etwas weniger als 45 Minuten Zeit, bevor sich der Bildschirm des Laptops abschaltet. Wenn während dieser Zeitspanne die volle Leistung abgerufen werden könnte, wäre das ein durchaus beachtliches Ergebnis. Ohne angeschlossenes Netzteil reduziert sich die Taktrate der CPU jedoch auf maximal 2,2 GHz und auch die GTX 1070 wechselt in den Stromsparmodus. Das sorgt bei allen Spielen für eine unterwältigende Performance.

Microsoft hat passend zum Marktstart des Surface Book in Deutschland auch ein Firmware-Update veröffentlicht, welches sowohl beim Surface Pro 4 als auch beim Book die Probleme mit der Stabilität und dem Energieverbrauch im Ruhezustand beheben soll. Die neue Firmware wird ab sofort per Update verteilt und wir erhoffen uns natürlich von euch Feedback, ob das Update die genannten Probleme lösen konnte.
Rund 2.200 Euro kostet der Alienware m15 aktuell im Handel. Doch ist der Oberklasse-Gaming-Laptop sein Geld wirklich wert? Wir haben das High-End-Notebook für euch getestet.

Der Alienware m15 ist ein absolutes Leistungsmonster. Während des Testzeitraumes gab es keine Aufgabe, die der Gaming-Laptop nicht bewältigen konnte. Fotobearbeitung, aktuelle PC-Spiele auf höchsten Einstellungen oder Video-Editing – alles kein Problem für das Notebook. Doch wer einen Blick auf die verbaute Hardware unseres Testgerätes wirft, dürfte davon nicht überrascht sein.

Der Intel Core i7-8750H sorgt nicht nur ein flottes Tempo beim Arbeiten, sondern eignet sich dank relativ hohen Boost-Taktes von maximal 3,9 GHz auch als Gaming-CPU. Gepaart mit der GTX 1070 im Max-Q-Design und der beinahe absurden Arbeitsspeichergröße von 32 GB macht der Alienware m15 auch bei aktuellen Titeln wie Apex Legends, Hitman 2 oder Far Cry 5 eine gute Figur und sorgt für flüssige Bildraten, auch jenseits der magischen 60 FPS. Ganz so stark wie eine normale GTX 1070 ist die spezielle Laptop-GPU aber nicht. Wer jedoch bereit ist, die Einstellungen etwas herunterzuschrauben, oder hauptsächlich Spiele wie Rocket League, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, League of Legends oder Fortnite spielt, kann voll und ganz die Vorzüge des 144-Hz-Displays genießen.

Dank des geringen Gewichts von lediglich 2,2 Kilogramm und der kompakten Bauart, eignet sich der Laptop auch für mobilen Einsatz, vorausgesetzt man kommt mit einer Akkulaufzeit von etwas mehr als 3,5 Stunden über den Tag. Tastatur und Touchpad machen einen fantastischen Eindruck und ließen während des Tests fast keine Wünsche offen. Vor allem die guten Druckpunkte und die saubere Verarbeitung beider Bedienelemente hinterließen bei mir einen bleibenden Eindruck.

Doch rechtfertigt das alles einen Preis von mehr als 2.000 Euro? Das ist eine Frage, die jeder für sich selbst beantworten muss. Obwohl Gaming-Notebooks sich inzwischen wachsender Beliebtheit erfreuen, ist Alienware mit einer solch leistungsstarken Ausstattung immer noch der unangefochtene Platzhirsch in der Sparte. Die meisten Gaming-Laptops anderer Hersteller bekommt man zwar deutlich günstiger, diese bieten aber dann auch keine 1 TB große PCIe-SSD oder 32 GB RAM. Der Alienware m15 lässt im Gesamtpaket fast keine Wünsche offen und zeigt der Konkurrenz, trotz einiger Schwächen, was ein moderner Gaming-Laptop so alles leisten kann und sollte.

Innerhalb von 20 Sekunden ist der Gaming-Laptop vollständig hochgefahren und kann benutzt werden. Besonders erfreulich: Störende Bloatware, die mir den Speicherplatz und den letzten Nerv raubt, konnte ich auf dem Testgerät nicht finden. Top!
Die Außenhülle des Laptops besteht aus einer Leichtmetall-Legierung, die für eine wertige Optik sorgt. Wer den Bildschirmdeckel öffnet, wird von einer Handballenauflage mit Gummiüberzug, einer RGB-Tastatur und dem 15,6-Zoll-Display begrüßt. Während Alienware im unteren Bereich auf ein mattes Erscheinungsbild setzt, werden die Lautsprecher und der Bildschirm von Hochglanzabdeckungen ummantelt. Die Optik des Gaming-Laptops hinterlässt einen fantastischen Ersteindruck. Obwohl für viele potenzielle Kunden die Optik ein wichtiges Kaufkriterium ist, ist ein anderer Bereich deutlich wichtiger: die Spiele-Performance.

Während ich beim Test des günstigeren Medion Erazer X6805 noch auf einen Mix zwischen mittleren und hohen Einstellungen setzte, um eine möglichst hohe Performance erreichen zu können, schob ich beim Alienware m15 alle Regler auf „Hoch“ oder „Ultra“. Alle Tests wurden in einer Auflösung von 1080p durchgeführt, eine Skalierung der Auflösung erfolgte in keinem der Titel. Folgende Spiele wurden getestet: Hitman 2, Apex Legends, Far Cry 5, Fortnite Battle Royale, DOOM 2016, Monster Hunter World, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, PlayerUnknowns Battlegrounds, Metro Last Light Redux und Rise of the Tomb Raider:

Trotz der hohen Grafikeinstellungen konnten viele Spiele von dem 144-Hz-Panel des Alienware m15 profitieren, wenn auch nicht vollständig ausreizen. In fast allen Spielen stieß der Prozessor des Laptops jedoch innerhalb kürzester Zeit an seine thermischen Grenzen. Trotz der zahlreichen Lüfterauslässe an den Seiten und auf der Rückseite steuerte der i7-8750H zielgerichtet nach einigen Minuten unter Last die kritische 100-Grad-Celsius-Marke an. Danach wurde die CPU vom System gedrosselt. Statt des ursprünglichen Boost-Taktes von rund 3,9 GHz arbeitete der Laptop-Prozessor fortan nur noch mit maximal 3,1 GHz.

Für eine echte Abkühlung sorgte das jedoch nicht. Auch dann schwankten die Temperaturen zwischen 80 und 90 Grad Celsius. Trotz der Drosselung des Prozessortaktes kam es zu keinen nennenswerten Performanceeinbußen oder gar Mikrorucklern. Auch über einen mehrstündigen Zeitraum unter Last blieb die Spieleleistung im Netzbetrieb stabil.

Das Sony Vaio Fit 11A soll von den Besitzern seit mittlerweile fast zwei Wochen nicht mehr benutzt werden, da der Akku sich unter bestimmten Umständen zu stark erhitzen und einen Brand auslösen könnte. Nun hat das Unternehmen weitere Informationen zu einem Austauschprogramm veröffentlicht, welches am 19. Mai beginnen soll. Betroffene Käufer sollen sich an den Sony Support wenden und werden dann mit allen weiteren Informationen versorgt.

Sonys Aussieg auf dem PC-Business wird von einem unschönen Vorfall überschattet. Eines der letzen eigenen Convertible-Notebooks mit umklappbarem Display, das Sony Vaio Fit 11A, wurde in einigen Chargen mit fehlerhaften Akkus von Drittanbietern ausgeliefert. Im ungünstigsten Fall erhitzt sich der Akku zu stark und kann einen Brand auslösen mit möglicherweise fatalen Folgen. Deswegen appelliert Sony auch weiterhin an alle Besitzer den Betrieb einzustellen und das Vaio Fit 11A vorerst nicht zu nutzen, bis der Akku durch den Service ausgetaucht wurde. Größere Händler haben die Modelle mittlerweile aus dem Sortiment genommen. Weitere Geräte wie das Sony Vaio Fit 13A, 14A oder 15A sind von dem Problem nicht betroffen.

Der Austausch des Akkus ist für den Besitzer natürlich kostenfrei. Das Austauschprogramm beginnt am 19. Mai. Betroffene Kunden können sich aber schon jetzt an den Support wenden und den Austausch beantragen, immerhin muss man bis dahin noch einige Wochen auf das Gerät verzichten. Sony wird mit Sicherheit erst wieder neue Akkus fertigen müssen bzw. fertigen lassen, was seine Zeit benötigt, da man sich mittlerweile aus dem PC-Geschäft und der Fertigung verabschiedet hat. Laut der offiziellen Mitteilung können sich Kunden aber auch das Geld zurückerstatten lassen, wenn man sein Sony Vaio Fit 11A nicht mehr haben möchte durch diesen Vorfall. Das müsst ihr dann aber individuell mit dem Support klären, denn die Aussagen beziehen sich wohl hauptsächlich auf Japan.

Microsoft hat heute den Verkauf des Surface Book gestartet und bietet damit den ersten Laptop des Unternehmens auch in Deutschland an. Passend dazu hat das Unternehmen auch eine neue Firmware für das Surface Book und das Surface Pro 4 veröffentlicht, welches endlich die vielen kleinen und größeren Probleme lösen soll.

Das vor einigen Monaten offiziell vorgestellte Surface Book feiert heute in Deutschland seinen Marktstart. Es ist der erste Laptop, den Microsoft gebaut hat, und damit ein wichtiger Meilenstein für das Unternehmen. Im Vergleich zum Surface Pro 4 ist das Surface Book Laptop und Tablet in einem Gerät. Das Display lässt sich nämlich abnehmen und als Clipboard nutzen. In unserem Surface Book Test konnte der erste Laptop von Microsoft mit einer sehr guten Verarbeitungsqualität, der guten Performance und Laufzeit punkten. Überzeugt haben auch das Tastatur-Dock mit dem zweiten Akku und die Nvidia-GPU, die in einigen Modellen des Surface Book verbaut ist. Probleme gab es etwas mit der Software und Stabilität. Diese will Microsoft aber mit dem neusten Update gelöst haben.

Das Surface Book ist ein Premium-Laptop zum Premium-Preis. Microsoft verlangt ab 1.649 Euro für die kleinste Konfiguration ohne Nvidia-GPU. Möchte man die dedizierte Grafikkarte im Tastatur-Dock haben, muss man mindestens 2.069 Euro auf den Tisch legen. Das Topmodell kostet dann auch stolze 2.919 Euro. Dafür gibt es aber auch mehr Speicher und RAM.Wie schon beim Surface Pro 4 erhalten Studenten beim Kauf im Microsoft Store 10%-Rabatt* auf den Kaufpreis des Surface Book. Interessenten können also nochmals ordentlich sparen.

Ein weiteres Problem, das Linus in seinem Video anspricht, ist der hohe Akkuverbrauch des OLED-Displays, wenn helle Bildschirminhalte angezeigt werden. Wer also länger unterwegs ist und keine Steckdose in der Nähe hat, sollte sich ein möglichst dunkles Desktop-Hintergrundbild aussuchen und möglichst viele Anwendungen und Webseiten im Dark Mode nutzen. Ansonsten macht der Akku sehr schnell schlapp.

Während Gaming-Laptops früher gefühlt immer überteuert waren, ist die Konkurrenz auf dem Markt inzwischen so groß geworden, dass es man mit etwas Geduld und einem wachsamen Blick auch auf echte Preis-Leistungs-Knaller stößt. Dazu gehört auch der aktuelle Gaming-Laptop-Deal von Notebooksbilliger. Dort findet ihr den Asus TUF Gaming, mit der Modellnummer „FX504GM-E4173T“ für 899 Euro im Angebot. Da aber noch 4,99 Euro an Versandkosten hinzukommen, landet ihr bei einem Endpreis von 903,99 Euro.
Dafür bekommt ihr eine solide Hardware-Ausstattung zum Spielen in Full-HD-Auflösung. Ein Betriebssystem ist auf dem Gaming-Laptop bereits vorinstalliert. Lediglich die knapp bemessenen 8 GB Arbeitsspeicher trüben den Gesamteindruck etwas.

i7-Prozessor, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060, eine Kombination aus SSD und HDD, sowie ein moderates Gewicht von 2,3 Kilogramm. Auf dem ersten Blick scheint das Angebot des Asus TUF Gaming beinahe perfekt zu sein. Doch bei einem Preis von 900 Euro muss auch an einigen Stellen gespart werden: Statt einer deutlich schnelleren PCIe-SSD wird nur eine M.2-SATA-Modell verbaut, zudem fällt die Kapazität des Arbeitsspeichers mit 8 GB recht gering aus. Da jedoch nur ein Riegel im Gerät verbaut und ein weiterer Slot verfügbar ist, kann dieser Schwachpunkt ganz leicht mit etwas Eigeninitiative ausgebessert werden.

Weiteres Manko: Die geringe Akkulaufzeit des Gaming-Laptops. 48 Wh sind wirklich nicht viel, selbst bei leichter Nutzung wie dem Arbeiten mit Office-Programmen oder beim Browsen im Netz wird dem Notebook schnell die Puste ausgehen. Einen kompletten Arbeitstag ohne Zwischenstopp an der Steckdose übersteht man auf jeden Fall nicht. Nur wenn der Laptop am Strom hängt, kann er seine volle Stärke ausspielen. Der 6-Kern-Prozessor sorgt für ordentlich Leistung, sowohl beim Spielen als auch in anderen rechenintensiven Aufgaben. Die Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 reicht locker aus, um das verbaute Full-HD-Display mit flüssigen Bildraten um die 60 FPS zu versorgen.

So eine gute Hardware-Ausstattung bei einem Gaming-Laptop findet man nur selten für weniger als 1.000 Euro. Der Asus TUF Gaming ist damit ein echtes Schnäppchen und kriegt von uns eine klare Kaufempfehlung, wenn man sich mit der geringen Akkulaufzeit des Laptops anfreunden kann und sich nicht davor scheut, das Gerät nach dem Kauf aufzuschrauben, um noch einen RAM-Riegel nachzurüsten.

Wenn das Startmenü immer noch nicht geht, dann sind unter Umständen Systemdateien von Windows 10 beschädigt. Repariert dann Windows 10 mit DISM und SFC.
Wenn nichts hilft, braucht ihr einfach ein Startmenü. Installiert euch dann vorübergehend ein anderes Startmenü-Programm wie Classic Shell oder Start10. Sonst bleibt als letzte Lösung nur, Windows 10 neu zu installieren.

Obwohl Nintendo erst vor Kurzem die Nintendo Switch Lite vorgestellt hat, kommt das japanische Unternehmen schon mit der nächsten Überraschung um die Ecke. So ist ab sofort eine neue Edition der Original-Switch mit verbesserter Akkulaufzeit in den Läden verfügbar.

Wer seine Nintendo Switch am liebsten unterwegs benutzt, kann damit je nach Spiel zwischen 2,5 - 6,5 Stunden Spaß haben. Das soll sich jetzt ändern, denn Nintendo hat ein überarbeitetes Modell vorgestellt, dass eine Akkuleistung zwischen 4,5 - 9 Stunden bieten wird.

Abseits der Akkuleistung wird das neue Modell über eine nahezu identische Ausstattung verfügen wie das Original. Lediglich der Prozessor und der Speicher erhalten ein kleines Upgrade, die durch ihre Energieeffizienz wiederum für eine verlängerte Akkulaufzeit sorgen. Auch der Preis von 329 Euro bleibt gleich. Die neue Edition der Konsole ist ab sofort verfügbar.

Die Modellnummer der neuen Nintendo Switch mit längerer Akkulaufzeit findest du außen auf der Packung.
Um welches Modell es sich handelt, erfährst du auf der Außenseite der Packung. Außerdem kannst du im Menü die Seriennummer überprüfen. Diese findest du unter Systemeinstellungen > Konsole > Seriennummer. Beginnt diese mit XA, so handelt es sich um das alte Modell. Bei neuen Modellen mit längerer Akkulaufzeit beginnt die Seriennummer hingegen mit XK.

Echtes Schwarz, satte Kontraste, geringerer Stromverbrauch bei dunklen Szenen – OLED hat sich innerhalb der letzten Jahren in der Fernseher-Branche durchgesetzt. Höchste Zeit, dass die Technologie auch in Laptop-Bildschirmen Einzug hält. Doch aktuell haben OLED-Laptops noch mit einem massivem Problem zu kämpfen, wie Tech-YouTuber LinusTechTips in seinem Video erklärt.

Auf der diesjährigen CES in Las Vegas schien vor allem ein Thema in aller Munde zu sein: OLED-Laptops. Gleich sechs neue Geräte wurden während der Fachmesse für Unterhaltungselektronik vorgestellt, inzwischen sind die ersten Modelle verfügbar. Darunter befindet sich auch das Profi-Modell des Razer Blade 15 (2019). Der Tech-YouTuber Linus konnte sich den Gaming-Laptop bereits anschauen und erklärt, was eines der größten Probleme der neuen Gerätegattung ist:


Vor allem Content-Creator wie Videoproduzenten oder Fotografen sollten aktuell noch Abstand von OLED-Laptops nehmen. Denn obwohl Farben und Kontraste auf den ersten Blick sehr knackig und knallig wirken, nimmt die Farbgenauigkeit mit zunehmender Helligkeit des Bildschirms immer weiter ab. Das liegt daran, dass das Display nicht genug Strom zur Verfügung gestellt bekommt. Auf der maximalen Helligkeitsstufe fehlt es dem Gerät also schlichtweg an Saft, um auch jeden Pixel mit seiner maximalen Helligkeit betreiben zu können. Um also diese maximale Helligkeit zumindest in einigen Stellen auf dem Display sicherstellen zu können, wird ein Teil der Sättigung und damit auch die Farbgenauigkeit geopfert.

Kleines Beispiel gefällig? Linus erklärt in seinem Video, dass er die den empfundenen Farbabstand des OLED-Displays des Razer Blade (2019) von einem Wert von Delta E 6,67 auf Delta E 4,35 reduzieren konnte, indem er die Helligkeit des Displays um eine Stufe reduzierte. Je dunkler also das Display, desto farbgenauer die Darstellung der Bildschirminhalte. Zum Vergleich: Ab Delta-E-Werten, die kleiner als 3 sind, geht man aktuell davon aus, dass ein Otto-Normal-Vebraucher keinen Unterschied beim Vergleich zweier Farben erkennen kann. Das geübte Auge hingegen kann sogar Unterschiede bis Delta E 0,5 wahrnehmen. Doch sollen jetzt alle Digital Artists die Helligkeit ihres OLED-Laptops herunterregeln, um vernünftig mit ihnen arbeiten zu können? Wohl kaum. Denn selbst wenn man in diesem Zustand den Bildschirm kalibrieren würde, wären diese Änderungen sofort wieder nutzlos, sobald man die Helligkeit ändern würde.

TVision worked well during the time I spent with it. One annoyance, though, was that the gateway box was fairly noisy, and never seemed to completely shut off. I didn’t really hear the sound—likely coming from either the fan or the DVR’s hard drive—when watching TV, but it was fairly noticeable when the TV was off.
I found the interface intuitive and easy to use. The left-hand side of the home screen has video tiles showing content that’s currently playing live, while the right-hand side of the screen has a list of shows that are either live, on demand, or stored on your section of the DVR. Most people will be satisfied with the included channel selection without having to pay for any add-on packs, though die-hard sports fans and those addicted to "Game of Thrones" or "Billions" are likely exceptions.

I spent the most time using the modern-looking grid-style program guide, called Live Guide, which is arranged by channel and time slots. At the left of the grid are shortcut filters—All, For Me, News, Sports, Kids, and Movies—that tailor the programs that appear in the grid.

When you highlight a show, a box on the right provides information about the program, including the episode number, when it first aired, and a brief synopsis. Recording a show required just a button click.Like other services, TVision Home learns what you watch over time, so it can make better program suggestions.

The system is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, so you can use voice controls to change channels or search for shows. In my brief test with an Amazon Echo, though, I found the system a bit clunky to use, since you have to tell Alexa to ask TVision to search for programs or switch channels. There is a microphone in the remote, which might make using voice control more natural, but it wasn’t active during my test.

Using the remote control was pretty intuitive; the layout is sensible, with clearly marked buttons near the top for turning the system—and your TV—on and off, accessing the program guide and DVR, and jumping backward and forward in the program guide in 12-hour increments.

Most of the operations are controlled using a large circular navigation pad at the center of the unit. Play, pause, record, and fast-forward/rewind controls are located beneath the circular pad, and above an alphanumeric keypad.One thing I didn’t like was that the remote operates using infrared, so you need a line of sight between the remote and the gateway box. In my setup, the box was slightly blocked by the end of a sound bar speaker, so I had to hold the remote high in the air to change channels. RF, or radio-frequency, remotes, like the one in my DirecTV system, don’t have to be pointed at their cable or satellite box to work.

One last financial consideration: Although Orby TV doesn’t require it, many people need a decent broadband connection for everything from video chats with family members to watching shows on Netflix, and you can often get a better deal when it’s bundled with other services, such as a TV package and a home phone. Cable and telco companies such as Verizon almost always have promotional bundle offers, and DirecTV and Dish partner with a number of broadband companies to create hybrid TV/internet bundles.

Orby TV doesn’t currently have this type of deal in place, which means you could save on your TV entertainment only to pay more for your internet connection.Over the past 18 months, a growing number of streaming services have really been shaking up the TV business, giving consumers a variety of new alternatives to traditional cable and satellite packages. The biggest selling point for all these services is that they offer a cable-style TV package at a significantly lower cost.

The latest entry is a bit different. TVision Home, from cellular provider T-Mobile, isn’t really promising to save you money, at least not much. Instead, it vows to be more up-front about the total cost of the service, which is launching at $90 a month for a cable-style tier of about 155 channels. After the promotional period ends—the company wouldn’t say when—T-Mobile wireless subscribers will get that rate, while others pay $100 a month.

Unlike traditional pay TV services, TVision Home doesn’t hit you with additional charges such as broadcast TV and regional sports fees, or DVR service charges. If you have a cable package, those can sometimes add as much as $40 a month to your monthly bill, and many consumers say such fees are unfair.
However, if you sign up for TVision Home, you will pay a $10-a-month rental fee for the required main set-top box/DVR, plus $10 a month more to rent "Lite" boxes for each additional TV you’d like to connect. You’ll also have to pay local taxes.

I recently had a chance to kick the tires on this new service, and generally liked the channel selection and the interface.TVision Home is a rebranded version of Layer3 TV, an internet-based TV service T-Mobile acquired last year. It’s currently available only in the eight markets Layer3 served: Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and Longmont, Colo. The company says it will expand its footprint later this year.

To set up the service, I had to swap out my regular DirecTV satellite TV receiver/DVR with the TVision Home gateway box. T-Mobile offers free in-home installation, but it’s not necessary. I found the setup to be a snap, since an account is created when you sign up for the service and is preloaded in the gateway box. There’s also a set-up video tutorial on the TVision Home website and a call-in number, if you need additional help.The TVision box requires a wired connection to a router or Ethernet jack in the room. And you need a fairly robust broadband connection—T-Mobile recommends at least 50Mbps.

The main gateway box comes in black or white. It’s considerably larger than most streaming players these days, but that’s because it houses a 1-terabyte DVR for storing shows. (That’s enough storage for about 400 hours of high-def programming.) Once I connected the box, I just needed to plug the power cable into the wall, load batteries in the remote control, and switch the TV to the right HDMI input. Additional TVs use smaller "Lite" boxes, which connect to the gateway box through WiFi.
The box comes prepopulated with the main account already set up, so activating service was fairly straightforward using the company’s website. Once the box is activated, you can easily add profiles for other family members, who each get their own personalized home screen, recommendations, and DVR recordings list.

Ein weiterer Kritikpunkt war der bisherige Kickstand, der zwar an sich sehr praktisch ist, sich aber im Winkel nicht verstellen lies. Auch das soll Microsoft beim neuen Surface Pro 2 überarbeitet haben. Genaue Details gibt es dazu bisher nicht, inwieweit man den Winkel beim neuen Modell beeinflussen kann. Der Stylus soll dem Surface Pro 2 im Übrigen weiterhin erhalten bleiben, zudem soll der Arbeitsspeicher auf 8 GB RAM erhöht werden.

Mit dem HP Pro x2 612 wurde heute ein 12,5 Zoll großes Konkurrenzprodukt zum Surface Pro 3 vorgestellt. Dieses kann aber nicht nur als reines Tablet genutzt werden, sondern wird auch mit einem echten Tastatur-Dock ausgeliefert, wodurch es ganz normal mit einer festen Verbindung als Laptop dient. HP möchte in erster Linie Business-Kunden ansprechen, doch mit Intel Pentium und Celeron Prozessoren dürften die Preise niedrig genug ausfallen, damit auch normale Käufer Interesse bekommen. Mit einem Stylus und Digitizer von Wacom rundet man die Ausstattung ab.

Das HP Pro x2 612 kommt je nach Version mit einem 12,5 Zoll großen HD bzw. Full HD IPS-Display. Optional ist dort dann auch ein Wacom Digitizer verbaut, mit dem sich handschriftliche Eingaben umsetzen lassen. Als Prozessoren dienen Intel Pentium, Celeron aber auch Core i3 und i5-Prozessoren, wobei es sich dabei um die Y-Modelle handelt. Demnach könnten einige Modelle auch auf einen aktiven Lüfter verzichten. Auf den Bildern sind die Schlitze auf der Rückseite des Tablets aber zu sehen. Zur weiteren Ausstattung gehören bis zu 8 GB RAM und bis zu 256 GB SSD-Speicher. Dabei kommt das Tablet allein auf eine Dicke von 12,8 mm und ein Gewicht von ca. 1 kg. Dort steckt dann auch ein 29,3-Wh-Akku drin, der für eine hohe Laufzeit von ca. 8 Stunden sorgen kann.

Mitgeliefert wird ein Tastatur-Dock auf dem das HP Pro x2 612 Tablet aufgesetzt werden kann. So verwandelt sich das Gerät schnell in ein normales Laptop. Dort gibt es nicht nur zusätzliche Anschlüsse, eine Tastatur und ein Touchpad, sondern auch einen zweiten 25-Wh-Akku, der die Laufzeit auf bis zu 15 Stunden erweitern soll. Dadurch steigt das Gewicht aber auch auf insgesamt 1,85 kg.

Als Betriebssystem gibt es beim HP Pro x2 612 die Wahl zwischen Windows 8.1, Windows 8.1 Pro und Windows 7. Es sollen aber auch Modelle ohne Betriebssystem verkauft werden, falls man bereits eins besitzt bzw. eine Alternative installieren möchte. An Anschlüssen gibt es USB 2.0, 3.0, DisplayPort, RJ45 und VGA. Damit ist man gut gerüstet für alle Einsatzzwecke und kann am Dock sogar einen Beamer ohne Adapter anschließen. Optional wird es auch Modelle mit Mobilfunkmodul geben.

Orby TV launched this spring, at a time when subscribers were fleeing satellite-TV services such as DirecTV and Dish at record rates. According to Leichtman Research Group, in 2018, those two companies accounted for more than two-thirds of the 3 million people who dumped their traditional pay-TV providers in 2018.

Two Plans Being Offered
Orby TV is offering two plans at this point. The $40-a-month basic package includes more than 40 channels, including many popular ones such as A&E, AMC, BBC America, CNN, Cartoon Network, Comedy Central, Discovery, Food Network, HGTV, History Channel, Lifetime, TBS, and TNT.

The $50-a-month Extras package adds more than 20 additional channels, including BBC World News, Cooking Channel, DIY, Nicktoons, and several Spanish-language versions of channels such as CNN, Discovery, and History Channel. The full channel lineups are available on the Orby TV website.

Although there are no dedicated sports networks, you can get some sports via local channels and what’s shown on TBS/TNT.

Premium channels cost extra each month—HBO runs $18; Cinemax, $15; Starz, $9; and Epix, $6.

These packages are competitive with cable-style streaming services that have become popular with cord-cutters.

For example, DirecTV Now’s basic plan costs $50 a month for more than 45 channels and free HBO. Hulu + Live TV offers 60-plus channels, including everything in the $6-a-month Hulu library, for $50 a month. YouTube TV’s $50-a-month-plan includes more than 70 broadcast and cable channels. All include free cloud DVRs.

To sign up for Orby TV, you’ll have to buy a receiver in store or online from Best Buy and Target or from Orby TV’s website.

A basic receiver costs $100; a DVR receiver is $200. The DVR has two ATSC tuners for receiving over-the-air broadcasts, plus two tuners for receiving the satellite TV signals. That allows you to record one show from either source while watching another, or two shows at once if you’re not watching TV. The 500GB hard drive DVR can hold about 100 hours of HD programming.

The company advertises freedom from the add-on fees that aggravate many cable TV customers, but it does charge a $4-a-month DVR service fee if you have a programming package.

Adding Orby TV to other televisions in your home requires a $50 installation fee for each set, and you’ll need separate receivers. There’s no extra programming charge—the monthly packages support up to four televisions.

One unique aspect of Orby TV is that, since you own the receivers, you can play and record over-the-air TV shows, and access recorded satellite TV shows, even if you suspend or cancel the paid-TV programming. You just have to pay a $12-a-month DVR/program guide fee. If you do suspend service, you’ll see the live satellite channels in the channel guide, but they won’t be accessible until the programming is restarted.

Most people will arrange for professional installation of the satellite dish. Installation costs $150, plus tax, and it’s handled by MasTec Advanced Technologies, which has a network of installers across the country. Typically, the company will set up the satellite dish on your roof, and then run up to 100 feet of cable to one TV.

Like all satellite-TV systems, Orby TV needs a clear, unobstructed view of the southern sky.

The antenna, included in the package, is attached to the dish, which should help with reception, since roof-mounted outdoor antennas typically get better reception than indoor models.

A self-installation kit, with the dish, antenna, and mounting hardware, costs $85. Keep in mind that installation requires a compass and signal meter, among other tools, and the know-how to properly position and align a satellite dish using coordinates for azimuth, elevation, and skew.

Fortunately, it’s fairly simple to rescan for channels. The process varies a bit depending on what brand of TV you own, but ultimately you’re looking for a control that says Channel Scan or Channel Tuning.
Start by using your TV remote control (or a digital converter box remote if you still have an older analog TV) to press the Menu or Setup button. You may see the Channel Scan control right away, or it could be one layer down, under Antenna, Channels, or Channel List. It might be called "Live TV" (for LG TVs) or "Broadcast" (for Samsung sets).

If you don’t see any of those options as soon as you press the Menu button—and that’s not unusual—you’ll have to go one layer deeper by first choosing Settings or Setup.
Once you find Channel Scan or Channel Tuning, you may have a choice to tune automatically (Autotune or Autoscan) or manually. You want the automatic option, which will make the TV search through all the channels.

If you don’t see any of these options, you can usually perform a channel scan by selecting the Input button on the TV remote or in the TV’s main menu, then choosing Antenna.

Depending on the number of channels you can receive, it could take a few minutes to complete the rescan. If it doesn’t work the first time, try again. We recommend doing a second channel scan anyway just to see whether you get any stations you missed on the first rescan.

If you’re already using an antenna to get free TV, you’ll probably only need to rescan your TV—you won’t need any new equipment.

The one exception is if a local station moves from UHF (channels 14-51) to VHF (channels 1-13) and your current antenna is either UHF-only or gets poor VHF reception. In those cases, you might want to consider a new antenna. (More on that below.)

Don’t Have an Antenna Yet?
If you’re just getting started with free over-the-air TV, you’re in good company. Even many consumers who have switched to streaming video services, such as DirecTV Now or Sling TV, use an antenna for local stations not included with their package. In fact, 28 percent of all U.S. households with internet service now use a TV antenna to get free TV service, according to Parks Associates, a market research firm.

Having the right antenna can help you get more of your local channels. In 2018, we tested 10 popular models, ranging in price from $10 to $80. Your reception will also depend heavily on your distance from broadcast towers, along with topography—such as mountains or tall buildings—that could interfere with signals. Amplified models can often help pull in more distant stations.

One final reminder if you are shopping for an antenna: Make sure it can receive both VHF and UHF frequencies. Some antennas provide good reception for only VHF or UHF channels, but not both. But you’ll need an antenna that can receive both to get all the stations you can receive in your area.

Satellite TV doesn’t pop up as an option in many cord-cutting conversations, but a startup called Orby TV is hoping to change that. Taking a page from the prepaid-cellular playbook, the company is offering a satellite-TV service with 40-plus channels for $40 a month, including taxes, with no contract and few add-on fees of the kind that frustrate many cable TV subscribers.

One reason the cost is so low: Orby TV doesn’t include local broadcasts from the major networks. Instead, the company bundles an outdoor antenna as part of the package to pull in free over-the-air broadcast channels such as ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC, plus PBS, the CW, and Ion Television.

That will work fine for many consumers, but antenna reception depends heavily on where you live.

Additionally, you don’t get any dedicated sports channels, such as ESPN, or regional sports networks. And the service right now is missing some popular networks, such as Bravo and Disney (Disney Channel, plus Fox, FX, and National Geographic).

Those factors narrow the range of people who might want to switch to Orby TV. But for the right consumer, the service can be a good alternative to stripped-down cable packages and to cable-replacement streaming services such as SlingTV and Hulu + Live TV.

Im Gegensatz zu „normalen“ Displays, werden für die Darstellung der gezeigten Auflösung die vierfache Anzahl an Bildpunkten (Pixel) verwendet. Das Ergebnis ist ein wesentlich schärferes Bild, dank der wesentlich höheren Pixeldichte. Vorausgesetzt natürlich, Betriebssystem und Anwendungen unterstützen den sogenannten „HiDPI-Modus“.

Apple selbst bewirbt immer nur die native Auflösung. Die „dargestellte Auflösung“, sprich wie viel Platz wir auf dem Bildschirm tatsächlich für Fenster und Bedienelement haben, müssen wir errechnen beziehungsweise wird uns erst in der Systemeinstellung „Monitore“ präsentiert. Hinzu kommen bei den Macs noch skalierte Auflösungen. Dank der sehr hohen Pixeldichte lassen sich so auch höhere, „dargestellte Auflösungen“ nutzen. Im Ergebnis haben wir selbst auf kleinstem Raum wesentlich mehr Platz für viele Fenster und Ebenen.
Doch aufgepasst: Dies kostet Rechenkraft, somit Leistung und bei mobilen Macs Akku-Zeit. Auch erfolgt die Darstellung mit einer leichten Unschärfe, jedoch absolut noch im tolerierbaren Bereich – die Nutzung ist demnach unproblematisch im täglichen Betrieb.

Standardmäßig nicht angezeigt werden kann übrigens die extrem hohe, native Auflösung – zu kleinteilig für die Größe der Displays. Tools wie zum Beispiel „Retina DisplayMenu“, „QuickRes“ oder auch „SwitchResX“ heben diese Beschränkung auf. Wirklich empfehlen möchten wir diese Option aber nicht, es sei denn, man besitzt übermenschliche „Adleraugen“.
Tipp: Käufer, die aktuell zwischen einem neuen MacBook (12 Zoll) und einem MacBook Pro mit Retina Display (13,3 Zoll) tendieren, sollten die höhere Auflösung des Pro-Modells beachten. Weniger wichtig bei der Wahl ist der physische Zuwachs von 1,3 Zoll, entscheidend könnte dagegen die höhere Auflösung sein – das kleinste MacBook Pro mit Retina Display bietet einfach mehr Pixel und somit auch mehr Platz zum Arbeiten.

Mit der Veröffentlichung von Windows 8.1 am 18. Oktober erwarten wir auch die Ankündigung bzw. bereits die Präsentation von neuen Microsoft Surface Tablets. Diese sind schon lange kein Geheimnis mehr, denn selbst Microsoft Chef Steve Ballmer hat die Arbeiten daran bestätigt. Die Resonanz der Mitarbeiter sei dabei sehr positiv, was vermutlich auch an den Neuerungen liegen könnte, die nun etwas detaillierter bekannt geworden sind.

Schon Windows 8.1 bringt einige neue Features und Funktionen mit, welche die Benutzung eines vollwertigen Windows Tablets erleichtern. Man muss nun nicht mehr so häufig zwischen der Modern UI und der Desktop-Oberfläche wechseln und kann bestimmte Bereiche nun noch einfacher und vor allem intuitiver erreichen. Das erste Surface Pro war noch mit einem Intel Core i5 der 3. Generation ausgestattet, was zwar für eine sehr hohe Performance gesorgt hat, aber den Nachteil hatte, dass die Laufzeit mit 4 Stunden normaler Nutzung doch relativ gering ausfiel. Soll mit dem Intel Haswell Prozessor in der 2. Generation des Surface Pro nun deutlich besser werden. Erste Haswell Ultrabooks mit hochauflösenden Displays haben bereits gezeigt, dass die Laufzeiten bei nicht viel größeren Akkus deutlich höher ausliefen. Wir können zwar aktuell noch keine Zahlen nennen, gehen aber aktuell davon aus, dass sich die Laufzeit erheblich steigern dürfte.

Ein neues Zubehör könnte zudem dafür sorgen, dass die Laufzeit noch einmal gesteigert wird, nämlich ein Power Cover mit Tastatur und eigenem Akku. Dieses hatten wir eigentlich vor einiger Zeit in einem Nokia Patentantrag gesehen, soll sich nun aber auch bei Microsoft gezeigt haben. Wie hoch die Laufzeit dann ist und ob das neue Power Cover genau wie die Type- und Touch-Cover funktioniert, können wir zu dem Zeitpunkt leider noch nicht sagen. Microsoft hat sich der kurzen Laufzeit aber angenommen.

Sollte das Tastatur-Dock aber beschädigt, verloren gehen oder gestohlen werden, kann man sich trotzdem an den Microsoft-Support wenden und ein Ersatzteil erhalten. Dann aber auch nur die Ausführung, die man beim Kauf bekommen hat. So könnte man im Notfall das Dock austauschen aber kein Upgrade durchführen. Es wird interessant sein zu erfahren, was der Austausch des Tastatur-Docks in den zwei Versionen kosten wird. Microsoft wird die Preise sicher bald verraten.

Nach der Vorstellung des Asus Transformer Book Trio auf der Computex 2013 wurde es ziemlich ruhig um das Detachable-Notebook mit Windows 8 und Android Betriebssystemen. Das Interesse genau an diesem neuen Asus Produkt riss aber nicht ab und so haben uns immer wieder Fragen zu der Verfügbarkeit des Trio erreicht. Heute haben wir endlich eine Antwort von Asus erhalten, aus der hervorgeht, dass das Transformer Book Trio Ende November bzw. Anfang Dezember in Deutschland erscheint.

Bereits Anfang September kurz nach der IFA 2013 wurde das Asus Transformer Book Trio bei diversen Onlineshops gelistet und danach ohne erkennbaren Grund langsam aber sicher wieder entfernt. Aktuell besteht die Möglichkeit der Vorstellung nicht mehr, wobei wir kurz vor dem Marktstart in Deutschland noch eine Pressemitteilung zur genauen Verfügbarkeit erwarten. Vermutlich müssen wir uns dafür aber noch einige Woche gedulden.

Das Asus Transformer Book Trio ist dabei eine wirklich interessante Kombination aus Android Tablet, Windows 8 Laptop und Dockingstation. Zum Verkaufsstart wird natürlich Windows 8.1 zum Einsatz kommen. Entnimmt man das Tablet aus dem Tastatur-Dock, arbeitet zwar weiterhin ein Intel Atom Prozessor darin, doch als Betriebssystem wird Android genutzt. In diesem Zustand ist das Tastatur-Dock aber nicht unnütz, denn dieses kann bei Bedarf einfach an einen Monitor angeschlossen, und so als Destop-PC genutzt werden. Verbindet man das Tablet wieder mit dem Tastatur-Dock, hat man ein vollwertiges Laptop mit Touchscreen, bei dem man wahlweise Windows 8.1 oder eben Android nutzen kann. Während das Tablet dabei auf den Akku im Dock zugreifen kann, geht das andersherum leider nicht.

Zur Ausstattung des Docks werden Intel Core i3 bis i7 Prozessoren der 4. Haswell Generation, normale Festplatten und SSDs, sowie verschiedene Arbeitsspeichergrößen gehören. Das 11,6 Zoll große IPS-Display mit 1920 x 1200 Pixeln bleibt aber in jeder Konfiguration gleich. Dazu gibt es auch keine Digitizer-Option. Preislich dürfte es laut den letzten Informationen bei ca. 1000€ losgehen, wobei wir da noch die offizielle Mitteilung zum Verkaufsstart abwarten für konkrete Informationen.

Wir sind uns zwar nicht ganz sicher aber vielleicht hat Asus den verspäteten Verkaufsstart zur Überarbeitung des Asus Transformer Book Trio genutzt. Es wäre gut möglich, dass man den kleineren Atom Prozessor gegen einen Bay Trail oder ARM-Prozessor tauscht. Offiziell bestätigt ist das natürlich nicht, sondern nur eine reine Vermutung von uns.

Zwei Notebook-Serien (MacBook Pro mit Retina Display + das neue MacBook) und ein Desktop-Mac (iMac mit Retina 5K Display) besitzen eine so hohe Pixeldichte, dass die Augen der Anwender bei normaler Betrachtungsdistanz keine einzelnen Pixel mehr wahrnehmen können. Wirklich „scharf“ ist diese Definition eines Retina-Displays seitens Apple aber nicht, eher ein typischer (zum Teil geschützter) Markenbegriff. Erstmals verwendete der Hersteller diese Bezeichnung beim iPhone 4 im Jahre 2010, 2012 erhielt dann sowohl das iPad als auch die runderneuerte MacBook-Pro-Serie den „Netzhaut-Monitor“.
Definitionsfrage: Besser HiDPI-Display statt „Retina-Marketing-Geschwurbel“

Korrekter wäre dagegen die sonst übliche Bezeichnung „HiDPI-Display“ (High Dots Per Inch). Die Funktionsweise kurz und verständlich erklärt: Native Auflösung (tatsächliche Anzahl von Bildpunkten, Pixel des Displays) und „dargestellte Auflösung“ unterscheiden sich voneinander, die notwendige, softwareseitige Umrechnung erfolgt durch das Betriebssystem (iOS beziehungsweise OS X). Folgend hierfür ein kurzes Rechenbeispiel:

However, the court could issue an injunction against Locast, meaning the company would have to suspend service while the case is being litigated. That could leave some cord cutters scrambling to buy their own antennas or to sign up for a cable-replacement service.

Who will win in the end? What Locast is doing is "certainly a novel—and untested—approach," says Jonathan Schwantes, senior policy counsel at Consumer Reports, who follows the broadcast industry closely. "Whether or not it will stand up in court remains to be seen."

With more of us looking to find ways to save money on our monthly TV bills, it’s no surprise that TV antennas have made a comeback. Once you get an antenna, you can tune in to local broadcasts channels, such as ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC, as well as PBS and Telemundo. It’s free TV.

But this summer, you may have noticed that a number of major broadcast networks are warning viewers that their stations will be moving to new frequencies. If you get your TV signals using an antenna, that means you’ll have to rescan for channels to keep receiving those stations. Those who get TV from cable or a streaming service aren’t affected.

We’ve been recommending that antenna users regularly rescanning for channels for some time now, but it’s especially important with many stations now moving to new frequencies. The transition started back in April 2017, but it won’t be completed until July 2020.

Rescanning simply means having your TV’s tuner do an automated update to look for new channels. This will allow your TV to find your favorite channels at their new frequencies. Though the frequency may be new, the channel numbers you use won’t change—channel 5 will still be channel 5, and so on.

Why are stations moving? Several years ago, Congress authorized the Federal Communications Commission to hold a spectrum auction, freeing up some over-the-air broadcast TV frequencies to make room for new high-speed wireless services.

Now that the auction is complete, about 1,000 TV stations have to change their frequencies. In addition, about a dozen stations will go off the air entirely. And some new stations may come on line.

Numerous online resources can help you learn whether any local stations will be moving, and if so, when. For example, the National Association of Broadcasters has created a helpful website, TVAnswers.org. We also like the FCC’s interactive DTV map on the agency’s website. Both can provide general information about station reassignments, and you can find out when your local TV stations are moving just by entering your address or ZIP code. The TVAnswers site also lets you sign up to get alerts when a local station is moving.

The spectrum reassignment isn’t the only reason to rescan every month or so.

If you did your original channel scan during a cloudy or rainy day, you might not be receiving all the channels available to you.

Second, most stations have been adding subchannels, in addition to the main program you’re tuned to. A rescan will help you capture any of those new subchannels, with programming that often includes a mix of vintage TV shows, nature programs, weather, and foreign-language programming.

A clickable map at TIA E-cycling Central lists recycling events by state, along with other local recycling options. Earth911 and Call2Recycle also have a tool to help locate recycling drop-off points, allowing you to search for collections by battery type.

Before you head to a collection site, though, make sure the organizers will accept the kind of battery you want to recycle.

You shouldn’t have a hard time finding a place to recycle rechargeable batteries or car batteries. Button cell batteries are often easy to get rid of, too, and some manufacturers offer mail-in recycling programs.

In some parts of the country, though, it may be difficult to recycle single-use alkaline batteries. While batteries often contain valuable materials, that isn’t the case for alkalines. They’re more expensive to process, and many recyclers won’t accept them, which can make things more difficult for consumers who want to be responsible stewards for their waste.

“If you can recycle your alkaline batteries, you should,” Dickerson says. “But if you’ve exhausted all your options, and there’s nowhere nearby to take them, putting them in the garbage is the last resort.”

Before you throw them in the trash, though, stick a piece of tape over the contacts. That will lower the risk of fires. Disposing of them in the original packing helps, too.
Locast, a streaming service that provides free over-the-air broadcast channels via the internet, has been sued by four major broadcast networks.

Locast has become popular with cord cutters fleeing cable and satellite TV, who don’t want to pay for local channels but can’t get decent antenna reception. The company started in New York but is now available in 13 metro markets, including Los Angeles and San Francisco.

In the lawsuit, filed by ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC Universal in federal court in New York, the networks allege that the service violates their copyrights by sending TV content to customers without paying for it. The broadcasters want the service shut down, and they want to be paid damages.

Why Would This Be Illegal?
The networks liken Locast to Aereo, a similar service that had to cease operations back in 2014 after losing a lawsuit brought by broadcasters that went all the way to the Supreme Court.

Locast is different from Aereo in one critical way: The newer company is a nonprofit that doesn’t directly charge consumers for content. Instead, it asks for donations of at least $5 per month.

But small donations aren’t its only source of revenue.

AT&T, which operates the DirecTV satellite and DirecTV Now streaming services, recently donated $500,000 to Locast. And when CBS stations recently went dark for DirecTV subscribers during a corporate dispute over programming fees, DirecTV flashed a message on TV screens suggesting that people use Locast to access the content. Dish is including a Locast app on its new AirTV players.

In a statement emailed to Consumer Reports, an AT&T spokesman said, "Locast offers consumers an innovative new way to access free over-the-air signals. We support technologies that give consumers more choices and better access to this local content."
Locast points out that copyright law lets nonprofits broadcast over-the-air channels free of charge, primarily to let signals be boosted or relayed to areas where normal reception is spotty.

"Locast is an independent, non-profit organization that provides a public service retransmitting free over-the-air broadcasts," David Hosp, counsel to Locast, told Consumer Reports in an emailed statement. "Its activities are expressly permitted under the Copyright Act. We look forward to defending the claims—and the public’s right to receive transmissions broadcast over the airwaves—in the litigation.”

Spätestens wenn der Akku die Warnmeldung „Jetzt austauschen“ ausgibt, besteht Handlungsbedarf. Was ist dann zu tun? Der Weg führt direkt entweder zum nächstgelegenen Apple Store oder aber zu einem Apple Service Provider (ASP) – dies sind Händler, die über eine entsprechende Zertifizierung des Herstellers verfügen und ausgebildete Techniker beschäftigen. Die Batterie wird dort fachgerecht ausgetauscht und der ältere Akku gleich umweltgerecht entsorgt. Bezüglich der Kosten gibt sich Apple transparent und ruft für die jeweiligen Modelle Pauschalpreise auf. Im Preis enthalten sind so auch sämtliche Arbeitskosten. Insgesamt existieren drei Preisstufen:

Macbook Pro Retina (13 und 15 Zoll): 199 Euro inklusive Mehrwertsteuer
Der Austausch der Batterie wird in den meisten Fällen noch am selben Tag vorgenommen. Vorausgesetzt, der jeweilige Apple Store hat den Akku auf Lager und es wurde zuvor ein Termin an der Genius Bar vereinbart. Bei Apple Service Providern kann diese Zeitangabe variieren. Meint: vorher nachfragen.

Werden die Kosten unter Umständen von der Garantie oder vom Apple Care Protection Plan (erweiterte Garantie auf insgesamt drei Jahre) gedeckt? Pauschal lässt sich dies leider nicht sagen. Apple verweist darauf, dass Akkus Verbrauchsgegenstände sind, bei denen eine reduzierte Leistung im Laufe der Zeit in Kaufgenommen werden muss. Eine Kostenübernahme wird so erst mal nur bei defekten Batterien gewährt. In der Praxis zeigt sich jedoch, dass Apple hier oftmals sehr kulant gegenüber den Kunden agiert. Übrigens: Auch die neue Austauschbatterie verfügt über eine einjährige Herstellergarantie ab Kauf.

Vorsicht beim Akku-Kauf: Manchmal verlangen Händler mehr als der Hersteller. Bei dem ist zudem der Einbau inklusive.

Zum Teil finden sich bei Händlern entsprechende Akkus, die separat erworben werden können. Hierbei sollte man beachten, dass es sich dabei nicht immer um Originalteile handelt. Innerhalb der Garantiezeit des MacBooks raten wir dringend von Selbstversuchen ab. Wird aufgrund des Austauschs der Rechner beschädigt, wird Apple eine Kostenübernahme für die Beseitigung des Defekts kategorisch ablehnen. In jedem Fall lohnt der Preisvergleich, denn manche Händler sind so „schlau“ und versuchen passende Akkus zum selben oder gar höheren Preis wie Apple zu verkaufen – natürlich ohne Installationskosten und ohne jedwede Garantien für etwaige Beschädigungen aufgrund des Einbaus. Gurman führte hierzu Interviews mit Personen, die über die interne Lage bei Apple informiert sein sollen. So soll es etwa Probleme beim Design des kürzlich vorgestellten MacBook Pro gegeben haben. Apples Techniker wollten ursprünglich Akkus verwenden, die sich an die Form des Gehäuses anpassen und so eine gesteigerte Kapazität bieten könnten.
Aufgrund eines Fehlers bei einem wichtigen Tests konnte Apple diese jedoch nicht wie geplant ausliefern. Um jedoch das wichtige Weihnachtsgeschäft nicht zu verpassen, entschloß man sich, eine alternative Technik zu verwenden. Das Resultat waren die mittlerweile bekannten Berichte über kurze Akkulaufzeiten, welche darin endeten, dass Apple die Anzeige der verbleibenden Laufzeit aus macOS 10.12.2 entfernt hatte.
Die Entscheidung, das Design zu ändern, bedeutete, dass andere Ingenieure für die Entwicklung umdisponiert werden mussten. Dies führte dazu, dass die Entwicklung anderer Macs darunter leiden musste.

Vielleicht sollte die Frage lieber lauten „Wer braucht keine unterbrechungsfreie Stromversorgung?“. In unseren Breitengraden sind Stromausfälle aufgrund von Netzstörungen eher ein Ausnahmefall. Und die meisten PC-Nutzer basteln auch nicht ständig an den Stromleitungen herum, sodass es nicht immer wieder zu Kurzschlüssen kommt.
Darum ist es so, dass die große Gefahr für „Otto Normaluser“ nicht von Stromausfällen ausgeht, sondern eher von Störspannungen, Schaltspitzen und wetterbedingten Spannungsproblemen. Die lassen sich aber durch relativ preisgünstige Steckdosen mit Überspannungsschutz abfangen und führen selten zu großen Computerproblemen. Das alles gilt für den durchschnittlichen privaten Haushalt.

Im gewerblichen Bereich kann das ganz anders aussehen. Zum einen sind dort die Möglichkeiten echter Stromausfälle höher. Zum anderen geht es dort um wesentlich wichtigere Daten. Wenn ein Betrieb seine Rechnungen, Kundendaten, Gehaltsabrechnungen oder wichtige Steuerungssoftware verliert, kann das durchaus kritische Folgen haben. Das Gleiche trifft zu auf Schriftsteller oder jemanden, der gerade an seiner Doktorarbeit sitzt. Dieser Personenkreis nutzt statt einer unterbrechungsfreien Stromversorgung allerdings gern auch ein Laptop – und da ist das Notfall-Akku gleich eingebaut.

Man kann also sagen: Je wichtiger die Daten auf dem Gerät sind, desto mehr Sinn macht eine unterbrechungsfreie Stromversorgung. Wenn bereits ein Stromausfall samt Festplattenschaden eine Katastrophe bedeutet, dann ist die Anschaffung einer USV sinnvoll.

Kontinuierlich verlieren Akkus mit jedem Ladezyklus an Leistung und müssen zwangsläufig eines Tages ersetzt werden. Einen Austausch durch den Anwender sieht das heutige Design von MacBook Air, MacBook Pro und MacBook Pro mit Retina Display aber leider nicht vor.

Den Anfang machte 2008 das erste MacBook Air. Der Luftikus beeindruckte zwar durch sein äußeres Auftreten, erkauft werden musste sich diese Eleganz unter anderem durch einen vom Anwender nicht mehr wechselbaren Akku. Im darauffolgenden Jahr bekam auch das MacBook Pro im Unibody-Design dieses herausstechende Produktmerkmal spendiert, ebenso wie das letzte Plastik-Macbook im sterilen Weiß. Bei all diesen Modellen befindet sich die Batterie im Gehäuseboden und ist für den Anwender nicht mehr oder weiteres zugänglich. Laut Apple darf nur ein zertifizierter Techniker den Stromspender austauschen.

Befindet sich das Gerät nicht mehr innerhalb der einjährigen Herstellergarantie, können geübte Schrauber den MacBook-Akku problemlos herausnehmen und, sofern man einen passenden Ersatz-Akku zur Hand hat, austauschen. Für das MacBook Air bedarf es jedoch noch eines speziellen Pentalobe-Schraubendrehers, um das Gehäuse zu öffnen.

Apple begründet diese neue Form der Bevormundung des Anwenders zu einem mit der flachen Bauform der MacBooks, als auch mit der Leistung und Ausdauer der Batterien. So „verspricht“ der Hersteller für die modernen Lithium-Polymer-Akkus 1000 Ladezyklen, bis die Batterie unter 80 Prozent der ursprünglichen Kapazität fällt. Bei normaler Nutzung müsste eine solche Batterie demnach mindestens zwei bis drei Jahre ihren Dienst problemlos verrichten. Leider lässt sich dieses Marketingversprechen nicht immer in der Praxis nachvollziehen, denn jeder Akku hat seine Eigenheiten und muss demzufolge früher oder später ersetzt werden.
Wie ersetzt man nun den Akku bei MacBook Air, MacBook Pro und MacBook Pro mit Retina Display, wenn Apple diese Möglichkeit dem Anwender selbst verbietet, und welche Kosten sind damit verbunden?

Ihr sucht euch für jedes relevante Bauteil (Prozessor, Festplatten, Grafikkarte, Netzwerkanschluss, usw.) die maximale Leistungsaufnahme heraus und berechnet dann den Stromverbrauch.
Oder ihr messt den Verbrauch der Geräte mit speziellen Durchflussmessgeräten.
So oder so ist das eine durchaus ernstzunehmende Angelegenheit. Denn ihr müsst diesen Wert zu den anderen wichtigen Stromverbrauchern addieren (Monitor, Router, Telefon, Netzwerk-Switch) und zusammen sollte der Wert dann noch deutlich geringer sein, als die (oben erklärte) Wirkleistung.

Eine kräftige USV hat beispielsweise eine Leistung von 700 Watt. Wenn der PC bei 300 Watt liegt, der Monitor maximal 150 Watt braucht und die anderen Geräte auch nicht zu viel Strom fressen, dann seid ihr damit auf der sicheren Seite. Andererseits ist das komplett überdimensioniert für einen Bürorechner, der keine wahnsinnige Grafikleistung hat und bei dem auch der Monitor eher im Bereich von 50 Watt pendelt. Das ist erst einmal nicht schlimm, allerdings brauchen solche starken Geräte oftmals einen Lüfter und der kann auf Dauer sehr störend wirken, wenn die USV unter dem Schreibtisch steht – von der Wärmeentwicklung ganz zu schweigen.

Doch was passiert im Ernstfall, wenn die benötigte Leistung die Angaben der USV übersteigt? Ganz einfach: Die unterbrechungsfreie Stromversorgung schaltet ab, sobald mehr Leistung angefordert wird, als sie bieten kann.
Je stärker die USV allerdings dimensioniert ist, desto mehr Leistungsreserve bietet sie auch im Ernstfall. Das kann positiv sich auf den Zeitraum auswirken, den ihr mit einer USV überbrücken könnt.

Es gibt unterbrechungsfreie Stromversorgungen in verschiedenen Bauweisen. Einige sehen aus wie etwas zu dick geratene Mehrfachstecker, andere erinnern an kleine Computergehäuse. Außerdem gibt es noch 19-Zoll-Einschübe, die im professionellen Bereich Verwendung finden und in Server-Racks eingeschoben werden. Die Preise orientieren sich in erster Linie an der Leistungsfähigkeit. Wir stellen hier in erster Linie unterbrechungsfreie Stromversorgungen vor, die „offline“ arbeiten. Sie sind die günstigere Variante, die im normalen Betrieb absolut ausreichen dürfte. Sie reichen den Strom von der Steckdose an die angeschlossenen Geräte durch und zweigen etwas zum Aufladen der Akkus ab. Im Gegensatz dazu werden bei einer „Online-USV“ die Geräte ständig vom Akku versorgt, das den eingehenden Strom zu seiner Aufladung nutzt. Der Vorteil ist, dass es bei einem Stromausfall keinen Moment gibt, in dem die Versorgung von Steckdose auf USV umschalten muss. Das sind zwar in der Regel nur Millisekunden, doch die können für sehr empfindliche Geräte entscheidend sein.

Ein solches handliches Gerät ist zum Beispiel die USV „APC Back-UPS ES 700*“. Bei Amazon bekommt ihr die USV für knapp 90 Euro. Die Stromversorgung APC Back-UPS BX bietet ein paar Zusatzfeatures und viel Leistung.
Ein anderes Kaliber stellt die USV „APC Back-UPS BX*“ dar, die ihr bei Amazon für knapp 139 Euro bekommt. Sie bietet 1.400 VA (700 Watt) und dürfte genügend Reserven für jeden üblichen Gebrauch mitbringen. Vier Steckdosen versorgen die Geräte. Bei halber Last sind Überbrückungszeiten bis zu elf Minuten möglich. Das Gerät lässt sich zur Überwachung an den Computer anschließen und verfügt über eine „Shut-Down-Software“, die den Rechner im Falle eines Stromausfalls auch bei Abwesenheit geregelt herunterfahren kann.

Die unterbrechungsfreie Stromversorgung (USV) ist im Grunde eine Batterie mit Kontrollschaltung. Sie wird zwischen die Steckdose und beispielsweise den PC gesteckt und überwacht die ganze Zeit den Stromfluss zwischen beiden, während gleichzeitig die Batterie aufgeladen wird. Wenn dann tatsächlich die Katastrophe eintritt und der Strom ausfällt, fängt die USV das in Sekundenbruchteilen ab und versorgt stattdessen die angeschlossenen Geräte mit Strom. Handelt es sich um eine „unterbrechungsfreie Stromversorgung mit Überspannungsschutz“, dann werden auch Stromspitzen überwacht und im Falle eines Blitzeinschlages oder einer sonstigen Überspannung werden die Geräte geschützt und sofort vom Stromnetz abgekoppelt.

Unterbrechungsfreie Stromversorgungen gibt es in verschiedenen Bauweisen, Größen und Leistungsstufen. Bevor ihr euch so ein Gerät kauft, solltet ihr eure persönlichen Anforderungen klären.
Die wichtigsten Fragen im Zusammenhang mit einer unterbrechungsfreien Stromversorgung lauten:
Wieviele Geräte müsst ihr anhängen, um sie eine Zeitlang mit Strom zu versorgen? Mindestens so viele Steckdosen muss die USV bieten.
Welchen Stromverbrauch haben diese Geräte im Durchschnitt zusammen?

Wie lange muss sie einen Stromausfall überbrücken können?
Aus den Antworten auf beiden letzten Fragen ergibt sich die Leistungsanforderung an die unterbrechungsfreie Stromversorgung.

Ihr findet in Shops unterbrechungsfreie Stromversorgungen, deren Leistung beispielsweise in 1.400 VA / 700 Watt angegeben ist. In den seltensten Fällen werden diese Werte erklärt und so hat sich – wie früher beim Quartett-Spielen – einfach der Glauben eingeschlichen, dass die Notstromversorgung umso besser ist, je höher die Werte sind.
Man unterscheidet hier die Begriffe Wirkleistung – die in Watt (W) gemessen wird – und die Scheinleistung, die man in Voltampere (VA = Volt mal Ampere) misst.
Die Wirkleistung ist der Stromverbrauch, der tatsächlich zum Betrieb der Geräte benötigt wird. In der Regel ist er deutlich niedriger als die Angaben auf dem meist etwas überdimensionierten Netzteilen.

Die Scheinleistung setzt sich aus der Wirkleistung und der Blindleistung, zusammen. Die Blindleistung ist ein rechnerischer Wert. Das ist Leistung, die nicht wirklich verbraucht wird, die aber dennoch zwischen Stromanbieter und Verbraucher übertragen wird. Wichtig ist in diesem Fall, dass die USV diesen Wert auch verkraften kann. Dementsprechend hoch muss sie angesetzt werden.

Obwohl die Scheinleistung meist niedriger als die Wirkleistung ist, ist sie bei den meisten angebotenen Geräten sicherheitshalber doppelt so groß.
Generell soll als Hauptregel gelten:

Die Summe der Leistung aller angeschlossenen Geräte muss deutlich unter der Leistung der unterbrechungsfreien Stromversorgung liegen! Das betrifft die Wirkleistung und die Scheinleistung.
Tipps zum Kauf einer unterbrechungsfreien Stromversorgung
Beim Kauf solltet ihr euch an der Wirkleistung orientieren. Wenn ein durchschnittlicher ALDI-PC zum Beispiel ein Netzteil mit einer Leistung von 400 Watt hat, dann wird er diese Leistung in den seltensten Fällen wirklich brauchen.
Das bedeutet, dass ihr nun drei Möglichkeiten habt, wenn ihr die Kapazität einer USV berechnen wollt:
Ihr nehmt einfach den maximalen Wert des Netzteils.

Wie erfährt der geneigte Anwender die Anzahl der bisher verbrauchten Ladezyklen seines MacBooks? Diese Aufgabe ist problemlos mit bordeigenen Mitteln von OS X zu lösen. Hierfür öffnen wir vorderhand das Programm „Systeminformation“. Zu finden entweder über das Apple-Menü-> Über diesen Mac -> Weitere Informationen… oder aber im Ordner Dienstprogramme innerhalb des Programmordners.

Anschließend wählen wir die Schaltfläche Systembericht. Unter dem Hauptpunkt Hardware findet sich ein Unterpunkt Stromversorgung. Schon bekommen wir zahlreiche Informationen zur Batterie präsentiert, unter anderem auch die Anzahl der Ladezyklen.
Allein die Anzahl der Ladezyklen sagt jedoch noch nichts zwingend über den eigentlichen Zustand der Batterie aus. Diesen erfahren wir direkt unterhalb der Anzeige der Ladyzyklen im Systembericht. Steht dort Gut oder Normal kann sich der Anwender entspannt zurücklehnen und weiterarbeiten. Kritischer sind indes die folgenden Warnmeldungen, die, wenn sie denn akut auftreten, auch in der Menüleiste beim Batterie-Icon angezeigt werden.

Mit einem Wert von 48 Wh fällt die Akkukapazität des Acer Nitro 5 gering aus. Die leistungsstarke Hardware des Gaming-Laptops arbeitet alles andere als stromsparend. Unter Last dürfte dem Notebook bereits nach etwa 50 Minuten der Saft ausgehen. Doch selbst wenn man versucht seinen Stromverbrauch zu reduzieren und das Gerät in den Akkusparmodus versetzt, sollte man nicht erwarten, dass man mit einer Akkuladung über einen kompletten Arbeitstag kommt. Das Netzteil sollte euer ständiger Begleiter sein, wenn ihr unterwegs seid.

Als Business-Laptop eignet sich das Gerät also nicht, das liegt auch am Gewicht. Das fällt mit 2,7 Kilogramm recht schwer aus, die Masse des Netzteils ist da noch nicht mit inbegriffen.
Wer sich an diesen Negativpunkten nicht stört, bekommt mit dem Acer Nitro 5 gerade einen sehr leistungsstärksten Gaming-Laptop, mit einem fantastischen Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis*.
Immer mehr Windows 8 Tablets kommen langsam aber sicher auf den Markt und so freuen wir uns natürlich auf jedes Gerät, welches es zu uns schafft. Nachdem gestern das Microsoft Surface Pro angekommen ist, konnten wir heute das Asus Vivo Tab TF810C auspacken.

Es handelt sich dabei um ein 11.6 Zoll großes Windows 8 Tablet, welches auch als Bundle mit einer Tastatur-ock gekauft werden kann. Dabei wird es von einem Intel Atom Z2760 Prozessor mit 1.8 GHz und 2 GB RAM angetrieben. Das IPS-Display bietet eine Auflösung von 1366 x 768 Pixel und ist zudem mit dem mitgelieferten Stylus bedienbar. Der interne Speicher liegt bei 64 GB und kann mit einer Micro-SD Speicherkarte aufgerüstet werden. Auf der Rückseite befindet sich eine 8 MP Kamera und an der Front eine mit 2 MP. Zur weiteren Ausstattung zählen WiFi, ein Micro-HDMI Anschluss, NFC, Bluetooth, GPS und einige weitere Sensoren. Das Gewicht liegt bei relativ leichten 675 g und es ist dabei nur 8.7 mm dünn. Die Akkulaufzeit soll laut Asus um die 8 Stunden betragen.

Das Tastatur-Dock kommt allein auf ein Gewicht von 665 g und eine Dicke von 10.3 mm, bietet aber nicht nur die Möglichkeit das Tablet in ein Netbook bzw. Laptop zu verwandeln, sondern beinhaltet neben der Tastatur und dem Mousepad auch einen eigenen Akku, welcher eine zusätzliche Laufzeit von 5 Stunden ermöglichen soll. Zusätzlich befinden sich am Dock zwei USB-Anschlüsse, während man am Tablet keinen USB-Port findet. Dort lässt sich ein USB-Gerät nur per mitgeliefertem Adapter anschließen. Einige werden zudem den SD Karten Slot bei der Tastatur Dock vermissen. Der Komplettepreis für das Tablet und Dock liegt aktuell bei 929€.
