Der chinesische Hersteller Xiaomi ist inzwischen mit vielen Produkten in Deutschland präsent, allem voran natürlich mit seinen starken Smartphones, aber auch mit Fitnesstrackern, Saugrobotern und Smart-Home-Zubehör. Wen die Produkte von Xiaomi bisher überzeugen konnte, der bekommt für rund 1.000 Euro (zum Preisvergleich) ein edel und hochwertig anmutendes Notebook mit guter Hardware. Den von Apple bekannten „Air“-Namen wählten die Chinesen nicht umsonst: Das Mi Air 13.3 ist betont schlicht gehalten, in einem exzellent verarbeiteten Aluminiumgehäuse mit toller Haptik. Dabei ist die Oberseite völlig glatt, im Gegensatz zu den meisten Herstellern hat Xiaomi nicht einmal ein Logo platziert. Natürlich ähnelt das Xiaomi Mi Air 13.3 optisch vielen aktuellen Mittel- und Oberklasse-Notebooks – was aber nichts Schlechtes ist.

Die Performance des Xiaomi Mi Air 13.3 ist gut, spielt aber in unserer Bestenliste der Notebooks über 500 Euro nicht ganz oben mit. Stellenweise hat der chinesische Hersteller ein wenig gespart. Der Intel-Mobilprozessor der achten Generation, der Intel Core i5-8250U, ist durchaus ansprechend und leistet gute Arbeit. Die 8 GByte Arbeitsspeicher sind in dieser Preisklasse fast Standard und steuern das Ihrige bei, damit Anwendungen flüssig und problemlos laufen. Und schließlich verspricht auch der dedizierte Grafikchip Nvidia GeForce MX150 auf den ersten Blick eine Leistungssteigerung.

Lenovo verpackt die Technik des Legion in ein durchgehend schwarz (Raven Black) gefärbtes Kunststoff-Gehäuse. Lenovo verzichtet auf optische Spielereien, so dass das Gerät auch im geschäftlichen Umfeld genutzt werden kann. Das auffälligste Designmerkmal stellt der versetzte Deckel dar. Er schließt nicht mit der Notebookrückseite ab, sondern sitzt gut 25 mm weiter vorn. Die Oberseite der Baseunit ist mit einer Gummierung versehen. Auf der Deckelrückseite findet sich eine Rillentextur. Positiv: Das Legion hat eine Wartungsklappe an Bord, die Zugriff auf die SSD, das HDD-Fach und den Arbeitsspeicher gewährt. Um den Akku zu erreichen, müsste die komplette Unterschale demontiert werden. Dazu später mehr.

Das Gehäuse des Y540-17IRH kann seine Verwandtschaft mit dem Gehäuse des Legion Y740-17ICH nicht verleugnen - sie sehen sich sehr ähnlich. Um die gleichen Chassis handelt es sich jedoch nicht. Das Y540-17IRH-Gehäuse fällt etwas kompakter aus. Gleichzeitig ist es einige Millimeter dicker. Beiden Geräten ist gemein, dass sie recht geringe Bauhöhen vorweisen können, gleichzeitig aber relativ große Grundflächen besitzen. Bei den Konkurrenten Schenker XMG Core 17 und MSI GP75 Leopard 9SD ist es umgekehrt.

Verarbeitungsmängel offenbart das Notebook nicht. Die Spaltmaße stimmen und es sind keine Materialüberstände aufzuspüren. In Sachen Stabilität erwarten wir mehr. So gibt die Baseunit auf Druck neben beiden Seiten der Tastatur nach - links stärker als rechts. Auch kann die Baseunit für unseren Geschmack etwas zu stark verdreht werden. Der Deckel kann noch stärker verwunden werden. Immerhin führt Druck auf das Cover nicht zu Bildveränderungen. Die Scharniere halten den Deckel fest in Position, wippen aber etwas nach. Eine Ein-Hand-Öffnung des Deckels ist möglich. Der maximale Öffnungswinkel beträgt 180 Grad.

Das neue MacBook Pro hat einen ordentlichen Sprung bei der Leistung gemacht. Dafür sorgt der neue Vierkern-Prozessor (Core i5-8257U), den Apple den beiden kleineren Pro-Modellen spendiert hat. Damit ist das Pro richtig fix und vor allem bei leistungshungrigen Programmen wie Photoshop deutlich schneller als das günstigere MacBook Air.

Spiele laufen auf dem Pro ebenfalls flüssiger, für leidenschaftliche Zocker ist es aber immer noch zu langsam: Bei Spielen schaffte es im Test selbst mit reduzierter Auflösung (1366x768 Pixel) nur 22 Bilder pro Sekunde.

Das Apple MacBook Pro 2019 ist ausdauernd und leise
Der neue Prozessor ist mit einer maximalen Leistungsaufnahme von 15 Watt ein besonders sparsames Vierkern-Modell – bislang schluckten Intels Vierkern-Modelle aus den leistungsstarken Core-Serien für Notebooks bereits in der U-Version bis zu 28 Watt, die stärkeren H-Modelle sogar bis zu 44 Watt.

Der geringere Stromverbrauch schont den Akku: Im Test hielt das MacBook Pro sechs Stunden mit einer Akkuladung durch. Zudem müssen die Lüfter seltener ran. Im Normalbetrieb ist das MacBook Pro kaum zu hören (Betriebsgeräusch 0,1 Sone). Nur unter Volllast drehen die Lüfter mit 4,0 Sone ordentlich auf.

Software. Lenovo continues to lead the market when it comes to eschewing crapware in its ThinkPad products. Aside from the sad junk that ships with Windows 10 Pro, the T490s is delightfully devoid of unnecessary fluff. There are a few innocuous third-party utilities for such things as the Intel graphics, Thunderbolt 3, the audio system, and the TrackPoint. And then Lenovo’s recently-updated Vantage app, which provides support services and driver downloads. That’s it.

Pricing and configurations. The Lenovo ThinkPad T490s starts at about $1200. For that price, you get Windows 10 Home, an Intel Core i5-8265U processor, 8 GB of RAM, a 128 GB M.2 PCIe-NVMe SSD, and a 14-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) IPS display that emits a relatively dull 240 nits of light. You can choose other configurations or customize to improve all of these components, up to Windows 10 Pro, an Intel Core i7-8665U vPro processor, 16 GB of RAM, a 1 TB OPAL 2.0 M.2 PCIe-NVMe SSD, and 500 nit IPS display with HDR for a price north of $2100. The review unit, with its Core i5 processor, 16 GB of RAM, 512 GB SSD, and 400-nit non-touch display retails for about $1800. But remember that Lenovo’s prices can fluctuate a lot, and various systems are often on sale.

Recommendations and conclusions. I’m not surprised to report that the ThinkPad T490s is a delight to use and travel with. It’s an excellent option for mobile professionals who desire the style of the X1 series but need more in the way of expansion. As a premium offering, you’ll pay top dollar for a T490s, but the device’s durability, style, and portability will make it a worthwhile investment. The ThinkPad T490s is highly recommended.

The 18650 cell has become a ubiquitous standard in the lithium battery world. From power drills to early Tesla vehicles, these compact cells power all manner of portable devices. A particularly common use is in laptop batteries, where they’re often built into a pack using the Smart Battery System. This creates a smart battery that can communicate and report on its own status. PackProbe is a software tool built to communicate with these batteries, and you might just find it comes in handy.

The code runs on the WiFi-enabled Arduino Yún by default, but can be easily modified to suit other Arduino platforms. Communicating over SMBus using the Arduino’s I2C hardware, it’s capable of working with the vast majority of laptop batteries out there which comply with the Smart Battery System. With that standard being minted in 1994, it’s spread far and wide these days.

It’s a great way to harvest not only the specifications and manufacturing details of your laptop battery pack, but also to check on the health of the battery. Overcharging, manufacturing defects, and damage from a drop are among causes fingered in the case-warping failures, which can range from annoying to downright dangerous as gasses within the battery heat up, resulting in the thing attempting to make a break for it from its tight confines.

Design. When you have a classic, iconic design, you don’t mess with it. As such, the ThinkPad T490s provides the standard ThinkPad black look and feel, which I find to be professional-looking and understated. The materials are premium, durable (Mil-Spec rated), and pleasant to touch, with a carbon fiber hybrid in the display lid and a skin oil-resistant magnesium in the bottom. All the familiar ThinkPad touches are here, from the angled ThinkPad logo with the lit red dot on the “i” indicating power to the iconic ThinkPad keyboard and dual pointing system.

Display. While the ThinkPad T490s can be configured with a variety of 14-inch display panels, the review unit arrived with a mid-tier option, a Full HD (1920 x 1080) IPS display with an anti-glare coating that pumps out 400 nits of brightness. Despite its 16:9 aspect ratio, Lenovo has done a good job of minimizing bezels, especially on the sides, which are 13 percent smaller than in last year’s model. And the display can lay flat, which is useful. The review unit’s display was not multi-touch capable, which I find to be an odd omission in 2019.

Components. As one would expect, the ThinkPad T490s provides a nice selection of modern components, including a four-core 8th-generation Intel Core processor—an i5-8265U in the review unit—8 or 16 GB of RAM, and speedy M.2/PCIe SSD storage (512 GB in the review unit).

Performance, noise, and heat. Performance has been excellent for the standard productivity tasks in which I engage, but I’ve also used it to write code in Visual Studio. The cooling system vents out of the right side of the device, and that can get warm if the device is running hard. But fan noise is minimal, as is the heat.

Connectivity. The T490s provides dual-band Intel 9560 Wi-Fi 801.ac wireless networking and Bluetooth 5.0 support. There is an Ethernet extension connector paired with one of the device’s USB-C ports for use while docking, but no cellular broadband.

Ports. I really appreciate the level of expansion provided by the ThinkPad 490s. There are two USB-C ports (one with Thunderbolt 3 that double as a dock connection), an Ethernet extension connector (for a dock), a full-sized USB 3.1 port, and a full-sized HDMI-out port on the left, and a full-sized USB 3.1 port on the right. I’d prefer to see at least one USB-C port on the right side, but the USB-C ports at least provide anti-fry technology.

Keyboard and touchpad. As a ThinkPad, the T490s is outfitted with an excellent 6-row, island-style, and backlit keyboard and the vaunted dual pointing system with TrackPoint and touchpad capabilities. But I have two gripes about the keyboard: Lenovo continues to reverse the Fn and CTRL keys (though you can reverse them in software) and the tiny arrow and PgUp/PgDn buttons crowded into the lower right corner made for too many mistypes.

Unique hardware features. Those concerned with privacy will be delighted to see that Lenovo outfitted the T940s with a ThinkShutter privacy filter for the webcam, which is a decent if unexceptional 720p unit. The T940s also supports two forms of Windows Hello authentication via its fingerprint reader, which is excellent, and its webcam.

Portability. At just 2.81 pounds, the ThinkPad T490s feels quite light in my hands, and it’s barely noticeable in my carry-on bag. And it delivered 7:40 in real-world battery life on average, according to the Windows 10 battery report, which analyzed about a month’s worth of regular usage. As good, you can charge the laptop to 80 percent in 60 minutes. Overall, it’s a highly portable road companion.

If the idea of a built-in six-inch secondary monitor sounds like exactly what you’re looking for in a gaming laptop and you don’t care much about unplugged operation, HP’s Omen X 2S is the only game in town (unless you want to track down a used 2014-era Razer Blade). If you’re sure you’ll find the second screen useful instead of fumbling with your smartphone for secondary functions like chat, it’s worth considering.

The compromised peripherals, clunky software, and short battery life make HP’s dual-screen gamer tough to recommend. With a dedicated keyboard and mouse, it’s a good gaming and productivity machine. But at that point, you might as well just opt for a compact gaming desktop with a second (much larger) screen.

At worst, this Omen feels like a collection of mostly passed-over gaming laptop ideas: the second screen from a 2014-era Razer, the keyboard and touchpad from a 2018-era Asus Zephyrus, and a cinched-in hinge from a late-model Alienware m15. None of these ideas are inherently awful in isolation, but bringing them all together in one laptop, along with sluggish software, doesn’t make for a gaming portable with mass appeal.

At best, the Omen X 2S is an experiment that a particular subset of gamers will find appealing, facilitating gaming and multitasking on the go without having to clutter up your primary display. But we’d still like to see better battery life so that you could multitask for longer than a couple of hours while unplugged.

Back in January 2018, HP issued a battery recall covering 50,000 laptop batteries which had the potential to overheat and become either a burn of fire hazard. A year on, and the recall has been expanded to include a further 28,500 batteries taking the total up to 78,500.

The faulty batteries were shipped in a wide range of products or sold as accessories for those products. As the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website explains, the complete list includes "HP ProBooks (64x G2 and G3 series, 65x G2 and G3 series, 4xx G4 series), HPx360 (310 G2), HP Pavilion x360 11inch Notebook PC, HP 11 Notebook PC, HP ZBook (17 G3, and Studio G3) mobile workstations. The batteries were also sold as accessories or replacement batteries for the HP ZBook Studio G4 mobile workstation, HP ProBook 4xx G5 series, HP ENVY 15, HP Mobile Thin Clients (mt21, mt22, and mt31)."

As Tom’s Hardware reports, HP actually updated the recall in January this year, but not many people heard about it. The CPSC forms part of the US government, which was stuck in a shutdown at the time and therefore sharing of this new information didn’t happen on its website immediately. That changed on March 12.

The advice for these newly added batteries is the same as it was last year. Visit the website www.HP.com/go/batteryprogram2018 to check if your battery is included in the recall. If it is, then instructions are provided on how to place your battery in a "Battery Safety Mode." Replacing them will require HP provide an authorized technician to remove the old, faulty unit and install a new one as the customer can’t do it themselves.

When those come out, use a plastic spudger to separate the base, starting from the hinges and working your way down to the bottom. It was tight on ours, but eventually came off clean. Once that was settled, the SSD and RAM were immediately and easily accessible. One of the two SODIMM slots is covered by a protective piece of paper. As for the SSDs, our configuration had an extra bay, so it’s really easy to slot in an additional drive.

Battery Life
Gaming laptops seldom impress in unplugged run time -- especially when Nvidia’s G-Sync is in play, forcing the laptop to lean on its dedicated graphics, rather than the more-efficient integrated graphics silicon. But even with its second screen switched off, the Omen lasted just under two-and-a-half hours on our battery test, which constantly browses the web, streams video and runs OpenGL benchmarks at 150 nits of brightness. That’s well behind the competition, and below the 3:16 category average.

To see how hot the Omen can get, we measured the heat while running the Metro Exodus stress test.The keyboard reached 30.4 degrees Celsius (86.7 degrees Fahrenheit) between the G and H keys, and the touchpad hit 30.3 degrees Celsius (86.5 degrees Fahrenheit). These numbers are quite cool for gaming, likely a byproduct of HP moving the keyboard to the very edge of the chassis and putting the cooling solution under the second screen.


The bottom of the laptop got as hot as a toasty 55.5 degrees Celsius (131.2 degrees Fahrenheit) in our testing, which is more in line with most gaming machines.
HP bills the webcam on the Omen X 2S as Wide Vision FHD, with dual-array mics. The camera does have a wider field of view than most, but images during video chats weren’t as crisp as I’d expect given the resolution, with the edges of my shoulders looking jagged. In short, the camera is fine for basic communication in games or the conference room. But if you’re a serious streamer, you’d definitely going to want a dedicated camera.

Configurations
HP sent out the middle of three US configurations of the Omen X 2S. For $2,849.99, you get a six-core Intel Core i7-9750H processor, Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q graphics, 16GB of RAM, and a roomy 1TB of NVMe storage. That configuration also includes the 144Hz 1080p main display.

The maxed-out option with an eight-core Core i9-9880H CPU, the same 2080 Max-Q graphics, 32GB of RAM, 2TB of storage and an even faster 240Hz screen will set you back $4,299.99. And an “entry-level” option with RTX 2070 Max-Q graphics and just 256GB of NVMe storage--all other components being the same as our review unit--sells for $1,799.99. The middle option that HP sent us is the best for gamers, as you won’t see major FPS benefits for the higher-end CPU and 32GB of RAM, and the 256GB of storage on the entry model isn’t roomy enough to store more than a few modern AAA titles plus the OS and other files.

The 15.6-inch primary display on the Omen X 2S features IPS technology for excellent viewing angles, Nvidia G-Sync for tear-free gaming and a 144Hz refresh rate for smooth, high-fps gaming. In other words, it’s a pretty feature-packed screen.It’s also fairly bright. We measured it at 306 nits, which is a bit above the category average as well as most of the competition. Only the Alienware m15 and its OLED screen scored better.

As for the color gamut, HP’s display managed 107% of sRGB, which is lower than the competition, as well as the category average (146%). But overall, the screen looks good and performs well, whether you’re watching Netflix or three hours into a dungeon crawl.

Both the keyboard and the touchpad on the Omen X 2S take a big backseat in terms of layout and execution to the presence of the second screen that sits above them. The reduced physical space means the touchpad is small and smushed to one side. And the keyboard has no wrist area, with the keys running right up to the front edge. HP does include a big rubber wrist rest in the box, but it’s heavy, gets dirty very easily, and has no way of attaching to the laptop.

The keyboard also has layout issues: The arrow keys sit right next to the touchpad’s mouse buttons, which are similarly sized in terms of height, so that it’s far too easy to trigger a mouse click when what you wanted to do was press the right arrow key, and often vice versa. You also lose dedicated Page Up/Down buttons, and the Insert and Delete keys live up above the Backspace button.

The keys are brightly RGB-backlit, and key travel doesn’t feel as shallow as some competitors (like Razer). But if you’re looking for mechanical switches, you won’t find them here. And if you plan on using your laptop to do a fair amount of work when you aren’t gaming, you’re probably going to want to plug in an external keyboard.

The same goes for a dedicated mouse. Gamers of course will want to use a mouse, but given the odd placement of the touchpad, and it’s small, square dimensions, I found myself missing my mouse even when doing basic things like navigating Windows. Out of the box, the Omen X 2S’ speakers were a disappointment. Volume at max wasn’t as loud as I’m used to with premium gaming laptops, and there was little in the way of low end. Software is included to adjust the EQ, which may help a bit. But if you’re expecting to feel the thud of explosions around you or to fill the room with your favorite thumping tunes, you’ll either need to invest in a set of external speakers or opt for another laptop.

So what about the 6-inch 1080p touchscreen that’s the Omen X 2S’s primary differentiating feature? On the positive side, it’s pretty versatile, as Windows sees it as a second display, so you can put literally whatever you want down there. My personal default for RTS and other titles like They Are Billions is to drop the minimap down onto the second screen so it’s easier to see slow-moving zombies as they attempt to drag themselves into my developing settlement.

Chat apps are also a no-brainer if you’re a streamer or social gamer. Although it won’t be easy to respond via text while gaming, it’s a decent way to keep up on the in-game chatter and respond via voice if that’s how you roll.I also found looking down at the screen less of an issue than I thought I would. Thanks to good viewing angles, the image always looked crisp and clear, and so long as I was sitting up with my body just behind the keyboard, most text and on-screen items were easy to see, despite the six-inch size of the screen. That said, I’d still prefer a second, large screen off to one side.

HP’s Command Center software does an OK job of controlling what you put on the second screen as well, making selecting and mirroring a specific part of your primary screen about as intuitive as using the Windows Snipping Tool.But I couldn’t shake the feeling that, in most cases, chats and other use cases for the second screen are better handled by using a smartphone or, if you’re somewhere at a desk, a dedicated second monitor. Because text isn’t always easy to read on a six-inch display, and mirroring the minimap doesn’t really make it that much bigger than it is on the main screen.

Port selection on the Omen is adequate, if not expansive. On the left edge, HP delivers an HDMI 2.0B port, a pair of USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type A ports, a Gigabit Ethernet port and a headphone/mic jack, alongside the power jack.

Connectivity on the right edge is limited by a vent. HP includes vents both at the back and the right side, to help keep this compact portable’s high-end components cool. As such, you’ll only find another USB 3.1 Type-A and a Thunderbolt 3 / USB-C port here. There’s nothing around back save for more vents on either side of the laptop’s central hinge. Ideally we’d like to see another USB-C port, but there are enough ports for most gamers and productivity users.

HP equipped our review unit of the Omen X 2S with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 with 8GB of GDDR6 memory, which is capable of playing most games at their highest settings, usually at the high frame rates that the 144 Hz primary screen is capable of. When I played 2016’s Doom at the display’s native 1080p resolution and Ultra settings, the game ran at an average of 147 fps (frames per second).

For our comparison systems, we pitted the Omen X 2S against recent 15- and 17-inch gaming laptops we tested. The Razer Blade 15 Advanced (with the same Core i7-9750H CPU and RTX 2080 Max-Q graphics as our Omen config), the Alienware m15 (with a previous-gen Core i7-8750H and RTX 2070 graphics), and MSI’s 17-inch GE75 Raider (also with a 8750H and RTX 2080 graphics).

On Shadow of the Tomb Raider (1080p, very high), the Omen ran at a smooth 64 fps, above the 58 fps premium gaming laptop average, and better than anything else here save for the larger MSI system.On the Hitman benchmark (1080p, ultra), the Omen managed to best even the MSI system, delivering 111 fps, again higher than the 105 fps category average.

When we turned to Grand Theft Auto V (1080p, very high), the Omen landed behind the MSI machine (81 fps vs. the Raider’s 96 fps), but was just above the category average.In Middle-Earth: Shadow of War, the Omen, at 98 fps, once again slipped behind the MSI’s leading 107 fps, but was ahead of everything else, including the 92 fps category average.

To stress test the Omen, I ran the Metro Exodus benchmark 15 times on RTX settings, simulating approximately half an hour of gaming. During the test, the HP system ran the game at an average of frames 31.3 frames per second. The first run went by at 32.2 fps, but then the laptop dropped about a frame lower and stayed there throughout the rest of the runs.

During the stress test, the CPU ran at an average clock speed of 3.99 GHz, and the average CPU temperature was 78 degrees Celsius (173 degrees Fahrenheit).The GPU’s average clock speed was 965 MHz and its average temperature was 55 degrees Celsius (131 degrees Fahrenheit). Temperatures and performance should be aided here, in theory, because HP uses Thermal Grizzly’s Conductonaut liquid metal, rather than thermal paste between the CPU and heatsink. This material is something enthusiasts often use to lower processor temperatures and, therefore, achieve better performance via higher sustained Boost clock speeds.

This is the first time that we know of that a major laptop maker has used liquid metal, and we’ve seen plenty of evidence that it does lower temperatures compared to traditional thermal pads or paste. But given the company’s use of a locked processor on the Omen X 2S, we expect real-world benefits to be minimal. We applaud HP’s use of the material, but would like to see it in place on unlocked CPUs in the future where the lower temperatures can be used to, hopefully, push overclocks higher and thus achieving more substantive performance gains.

The Omen X 2S’ six-core Intel Core i7-9750H is a capable mobile gaming CPU and no slouch at productivity. But it’s no flagship processor or full-bore desktop CPU. On Geekbench 4.1, HP’s laptop scored 22,608, just below the category average, but still better than the competing laptops here.

While gamers are often multi-taskers (participating in chats, checking tutorials on YouTube, etc.) who can appreciate a second screen, the real question here is whether an extra 6-inch display built into your laptop is better or worse than just using your phone for those secondary tasks. The short answer? It depends. But this Omen has other issues to contend with, aside from the benefits of its second (hence 2S) screen.

The Omen X 2S is a nice-looking gaming laptop, with a fairly clean and understated design (for a gaming machine), and sleek looking basic-black aesthetics. I could do without the glowing Omen logo on the lid, but you can at least change the color from the default red to whatever hue you like via the Omen Command Center software (more on that later).

And despite having a powerful set of components, including a six-core i7-9750H and RTX 2080 Max-Q in our $2,850 review unit (different configurations will be offered in the UK, with prices ranging from £3,200 to £3,500), not to mention the second screen, the Omen X 2S is reasonably svelte at 0.8 inches (20mm) thick and 5.2 pounds (2.36kg). Razer’s Blade 15 has even cleaner lines and is slightly slimmer (0.7 inches) and a half-pound lighter (4.7 pounds). But if you like the idea of a second six-inch screen, the Omen doesn’t deliver much in the way of extra bulk.

All that said, HP had to make some serious design changes to facilitate the second screen. The keyboard has been moved forward a la the original Asus ROG Zephyrus, relegating the touchpad to the right of the keyboard. Granted, most gamers are going to use a dedicated mouse -- and HP included an Omen Phantom rodent and Omen Outpost mousepad along with our review unit, to emphasize that fact. But the touchpad here, aside from being inconveniently placed, is also quite small and oddly square, at less than three inches on each side. In other words, you’ll almost certainly want to use a dedicated mouse whether you’re gaming or doing anything else.

As for that secondary 1080p display that is this laptop’s raison d’etre, HP has embedded it below a smoky sheet of glass that runs nearly the entire width of the laptop above the keyboard.On one hand, this hides the screen when it’s off (unless you’re in direct sunlight), helping keep the design from looking overly busy. But when the second screen is on, it’s hard to ignore the large expanse of glass on either side of it. Asus solved that problem installing a super-wide display in its (non-gaming focused) ZenBook Pro Duo, but that aspect ratio wouldn’t work very well for screen mirroring, video playback, or chat apps, which are arguably the primary use cases for the Omen X 2S’s second screen.

BioFabrication Facility (BFF) Test Print: Today the crew installed the test print cassette, performed a syringe swap, then removed the test print cassette following the BFF printing ops. This was done in support of the first test print using cells in the BFF. During the ground-commanded BFF operations, there was an accidental release of the "ink" material inside the printing volume. Cell Science-02 (CS-02): The crew replaced the used gas supply with a new gas supply in the CS-02/Bioculture System. There were some initial difficulties installing the new unit due to possible cable interference, but this was resolved and the unit was successfully installed. The ground team subsequently reported seeing good telemetry from the new unit. The CS-02 investigation uses osteoblast progenitor cells isolated from mouse bones to investigate the effects of microgravity on osteoblast cellular processes at the molecular and biochemical level. CS-02 uses a computational biology omics approach to investigate how osteoblasts respond to treatment with two known osteo-inductive factors.

Electrostatic Levitation Furnace (ELF) Controller Installation: The crew performed a sample cartridge controller installation. JAXA’s ELF is an experimental facility designed to levitate, melt and solidify materials by containerless processing techniques using the electrostatic levitation method. With this facility thermophysical properties of high temperature melts can be measured and solidification from deeply undercooled melts can be achieved. ELF typically processes oxide samples, but is also capable of processing semiconductors, alloys, and metals.

Gravitational References for Sensimotor Performance: Reaching and Grasping (GRASP): Today the crew completed the GRASP Free-floating science sessions. The GRIP experiment consists of 3 protocols: Dynamics Seated, References Seated and References Supine. They are performed in 3 separate sub-sessions. ESA’s Grip investigation tests how the nervous system takes into account the forces due to gravity and inertia when manipulating objects. Results from this investigation may provide insight into potential hazards for astronauts as they manipulate objects in different gravitational environments. They also support design and control of haptic interfaces to be used in challenging environments such as space, and provide information about motor control that will be useful for the evaluation and rehabilitation of impaired upper limb control in patients with neurological diseases.

Nanoracks Mod-82 photos: The crew removed the NanoRacks Module-82 from NanoRacks Frame 3 and took pictures of contents of module. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Palm Tree Growth Experiment examines germination of palm tree seeds in order to determine the best conditions for generating tissue samples for research. A process for growing healthy plant tissue in microgravity could be adapted for testing other indigenous plants of scientific, commercial or educational interest in the UAE. The investigation also observes and documents root growth in microgravity for educational purposes.

SlingShot: The crew installed SlingShot Controller inside the NG-11 vehicle in preparation for SlingShot Deployer installation. NG-11 will host the second mission for Slingshot, which is planned to deploy four satellites. In addition to the deployed satellites, one payload will remain attached to Slingshot. SlingShot is a small satellite deployment system that fits inside the Cygnus spacecraft’s Passive Common Berthing Mechanism (PCBM). SlingShot can accommodate up to 18 satellites that are deployed post Cygnus unberth.

Cygnus Robotics Onboard Trainer (RoBOT): In preparation for NG-11 release, the crew performed a session of RoBOT training during which they practiced three release runs. Cygnus departure is scheduled for next Tuesday, August 6.

Mobile Servicing System (MSS) Ops: Yesterday afternoon, Robotics Ground Controllers powered up Space Station Remote Manipulator System (SSRMS) and un-grappled the SpX-18 Dragon vehicle which is berthed to Node 2 Nadir. The SSRMS was then used to grapple the NG-11 Cygnus vehicle which is berthed to Node 1 Nadir in preparation for release next Tuesday.Battery drain is one of the major problems that affect almost all smart devices, from smartphones to the latest laptop models.

To hide photos, simply open your Photos app and tap Select in the upper right-hand corner. Next, tap the photos you want to hide and select the Share button from the bottom left of the screen (it looks like a box with an arrow coming out). Select Hide from the menu that appears at the bottom of your screen. Now, your photos are hidden in a separate album for you to access at your convenience.

When you’re neck-deep in text while you’re browsing the web, simply tapping the title bar of the app or web page will send you zooming right back to the top with no delay. Without lifting your finger from the screen, move it up to Split and the keyboard will immediately separate. To put it back to normal, the process is the same except you’ll select Merge instead.

Apple’s USB-C charging block is designed for its laptops -- but with a lightning adapter, your iPad can enjoy increased charging speeds with zero additional effort. Have somewhere to go? Amazon and other storefronts may offer some enticing deals on laptops, but you shouldn’t ignore Microsoft, HP, Dell, and other vendors who provide not only promotions of their own, but sometimes discounts for those in education. The student discount can knock a fair chunk off the price of even more premium laptops, allowing you to get more for your money.

Most students won’t need an Intel Core i9 processor, 32GB of RAM and 1TB of storage with a dedicated RTX 2080 GPU. These specifications sound great on paper, but you will need to pay out the big bucks for such performance, as well as a severe battery drain. A laptop with an Intel Core i5 or i7 processor and 8 to 16GB of RAM will be more than enough.

There are a few different screen sizes to choose from when shopping around for a laptop. 11-inch laptops are the smallest, while 17-inch portable workstations are designed for those who prefer using their notebook on a desk. The sweet spot for most consumers — and students — are between 13 and 15 inches. This would also depend on what the student would prefer to use. You shouldn’t buy the largest display size out there believing it to be the best.


Smaller displays are better for portability and word documentation, while larger displays make it easier to be creative. As well as screen size, the resolution of the display is also essential. A 1080p (1920 x 1080) 15-inch display will constrict a budding student more than a 1440p (2560 x 1440p) 13-inch panel, allowing you to run more apps side-by-side or see more without having to reduce the size of text or scaling.

The first clue that something might be wrong with your laptop’s battery is that it doesn’t last as long as it used to. Whereas once you got a full day out of it, perhaps now you’re finding that it’s running flat before you leave the office.

But this isn’t a proper diagnosis, certainly not enough to justify a battery replacement, because numerous other variables can affect battery life (temperature, what software you have running, changes to battery saving settings, updated software, and so on).

Fortunately, Windows 10 (and earlier versions of Windows) offers in-depth data on laptop batteries. But unless you are a Windows power user, getting access to that data is a bit complex and cumbersome.Fortunately, there’s a handy piece of free software that allows easy access to the current status and information about your battery data.

The software is called BatteryViewInfo by Nir Sofer (this software works on all versions of Windows from Windows 2000 to Windows 10), and it offers access to information such as battery name, manufacturer name, serial number, manufacture date, power state (charging/discharging), current battery capacity, fully charged capacity, voltage, and charge/discharge rate (note that some batteries may not offer up all this information).

If this number is over 500, the battery is getting old. If it is over 800, the battery is likely close to the end of its life. Over 1,000 and the battery is at the end of its life.Another two numbers to look at are Full Charged Capacity and Designed Capacity. The bigger the gap between these two numbers, the more worn the battery is. If Full Charged Capacity is below 80% Designed Capacity then the battery is likely showing signs of wear and requires replacing.Need to replace your laptop battery? The core of the Phoenix is a built around a 20-watt solar panel that remains protected for carrying, but when unlatched, flips open to harness the power of the sun. An additional 100-watt Renogy solar panel can be added for those looking for a bit more power from the compact package, for a total of 120 watts of solar generation capacity. 120 watts of power is enough to make the Phoenix Portable Solar Generator a good fit for those looking to power a small recreational vehicle, large campsite, or even a tiny house with a bit of electricity.

Intel’s Ice Lake mobile CPUs have only just launched, but that doesn’t mean we can’t get hyped up for what comes after that. Tiger Lake is the expected replacement architecture for Ice Lake, and it could bring with it major improvements in processor and graphics performance, as well as some baked-in features like new-gen wireless connectivity and much improved AI performance.

Intel’s leaked roadmap from earlier this year suggested Tiger Lake wouldn’t land until sometime in the first half of 2021, but that’s all changed. The first batch of Ice Lake-powered laptops are launching in the second half of 2019, with as many as 35 designs planned. With this accelerated release of Ice Lake, Intel has now pushed up Tiger Lake. Announced in April 2019 at an investor meeting, Tiger Lake will now debut in 2020 instead. Intel could give us the details of Tiger Lake at any point, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see our first glimpse at CES 2020.

Although there will be some performance enhancements over Ice Lake processors, Intel will again be restricting the Tiger Lake range to low-power Y and U series mobile CPUs. That means that prices for these CPUs won’t be super high, even at the high-end. 8th-generation Whiskey Lake U-series CPUs ran from $107 up to $409. Ice Lake CPUs are slightly more expensive, with the most costly (so far) Core i7-1065G7 priced at $426. We’d expect Tiger Lake to lie somewhere in the ballpark of those two generations’ pricing.

All of these chips will only be found in laptops and 2-in-1s, though, so these prices won’t be seen by the average buyer.Tiger Lake will be based on an enhanced 10nm process node named 10nm+. It will have some improvements over Ice Lake at an architectural level, with its Willow Cove cores enjoying an improved cache subsystem over the Sunny Cove cores found in Ice Lake CPUs. Beyond that, the details of the new “Willow Cove” core architecture are sparse.

Tom’s Hardware spotted a UserBenchmark listing for a Tiger Lake CPU in late July 2019. The unnamed processor had four cores and eight threads, with a 1.2GHz base clock and a 2.9GHz turbo clock. Those clock speeds feel a little low, but this is likely an early engineering sample so we would expect clock speeds to increase as we get closer to release hardware.

According to the UserBenchmark results, this unnamed chip was roughly as capable as an Intel Core i7-8559U quad-core CPU, and more than 25 percent faster than the quad-core AMD Ryzen 7 3750H in single and quad-core scenarios. It only lost out in multithreaded workloads by a single percent.

Intel has claimed that we can expect significant performance improvements in video encoding and particularly in small form factor systems, although as Tom’s Hardware points out, some of the numbers it quotes in relation to those improvements are a little lopsided.

As much as Tiger Lake will improve CPU performance over its predecessors, the more impactful generational leap may come in the form of its 12th-generation, Xe graphics. Tiger Lake will be the first generation of Intel CPUs to take advantage of its new Xe graphics architecture, the grander version of which will power Intel’s upcoming dedicated graphics cards.

Intel has promised huge performance improvements with Xe and Tiger Lake’s version will reportedly deliver up to four times the GPU performance of the UHD graphics found on 8th-gen Intel CPUs. That’s enough of an increase to expect smooth, 1080p gaming at 60 FPS in esports titles and older AAAs.

Two big enhancements that Intel has been keen to talk about with Tiger Lake are how it will affect wireless networking and AI development. Performance on the latter will reportedly increase by 2.5-three times under Tiger Lake. When combined with Tiger Lake’s low power requirements, this could make it a great chip line for small, but powerful internet of things devices.

As for Wi-Fi, the sixth generation (802.11.ax) will be natively supported by Tiger Lake, giving users access to super high-speed data transfers, better performance on busy networks, improved latency, and a reduction in power draw. That should equate to better connection speeds and longer battery life for Tiger Lake devices. But all that is launching with 2019’s Ice Lake.

Intel’s Ice Lake CPUs include the greatest collection of hardware fixes for mainstream processors yet seen from Intel, and Tiger Lake is expected to improve upon that with further security features. We don’t have any firm details on what variants of Spectre will be protected against with a new line of CPUs, but we would expect a greater number of hardware protections against additional variants. Perhaps including the same V3A Rogue System protections we saw in the Cascade Lake generation of Xeon CPUs.

REPTILE THEFT ATTEMPT A man who tried to steal reptiles early Saturday morning from the East Bay Vivarium has been charged with commercial burglary, according to police and court records online. Police responded to the beloved Fourth Street-neighborhood reptile shop just before 4:20 a.m. when the burglar alarm went off. When they arrived, the door was open and a window had been smashed. When they searched the business, they “found a suspect who was apparently trying to take reptiles,” police said in a statement. Police arrested 27-year-old Kevin Jerome Green, address unknown, on suspicion of burglary. Green was released on his own recognizance, according to court records online, and is scheduled to enter a plea Aug. 19 at the René C. Davidson Courthouse in Oakland.

LAPTOP ROBBERY A robber punched a 24-year-old Berkeley man and stole his laptop at Alchemy Café on July 25 between 11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., authorities report. The man was working on his computer inside the coffee shop, at 1741 Alcatraz Ave. (near Adeline Street) when a stranger ran inside and grabbed his computer. The stranger ran outside, but the laptop owner chased him and confronted him near King and 63rd streets: “The suspect refused to give the laptop back and punched the man’s face — leading to a struggle for the laptop. During the struggle, the suspect knocked the man to the ground and again punched him. The suspect then ran away,” police said. The robber was described as a black man, 18-25 years old, 6 feet 3 inches tall with a skinny build, wearing a hooded top with sagging pants.

LAPTOP ROBBERY ATTEMPT A short time later, two people tried to steal laptops from customers at Romeo’s Coffee, at 2499 Telegraph Ave. (near Dwight Way). Just before noon July 25, the pair ran into Romeo’s and each grabbed a laptop from a customer. When they tried to run off, however, a customer tackled one of the would-be thieves, police said. The other person got away. When police arrived, they arrested the 15-year-old Richmond boy who had been held by customers. Both laptops were recovered. KTVU obtained security video from the coffee shop robbery attempt and published it last week.

ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON Police responded to Berkeley’s Pathways homeless shelter at 1601 Second St. on July 22 for a report of a fight between two people that involved a metal bar, police report. When they arrived at 8:40 a.m., “they learned that two had been involved in an argument when the suspect left briefly to later return with a metal bar. The suspect swung the metal bar at the victim (a 26-year-old man)—striking the man’s back.” Police spoke with witnesses and arrested a 39-year-old woman with no known address. The woman does not appear to have been charged and is no longer in custody, according to Alameda County court records online.

ROBBERY That same day just before 11:30 p.m., a 20-year-old Berkeley man was walking at Euclid Avenue and Virginia Street when someone approached him from behind. The stranger grabbed the pedestrian by his shoulders and pulled off his backpack. After taking the bag, the robber ran to a nearby dark-colored vehicle and drove off. Witnesses described the robber as black, 6’1”-6’2” tall with a thin build, wearing dark pants and a dark hooded top.

SEXUAL ASSAULT ARREST A man was asleep in a tent in downtown Berkeley on July 24 at 5 a.m. when a woman went inside and sexually assaulted him, police report. ARMED ROBBERY Armed robbers struck early Thursday morning in the Southside neighborhood, the Berkeley Police Department reports. The men first tried to rob a man and woman who ran away from them, then targeted and successfully robbed a man who was alone nearby. At about 3:40 a.m., police responded to a robbery attempt in the 2400 block of Bancroft Way (near Dana Street): A 21-year-old Berkeley man and a 23-year-old Berkeley woman “reported being chased by two suspects,” police said in a Nixle alert. “The man and woman were able to run away from the suspects before there could be any confrontation.” Ten minutes later, however, three people confronted a 56-year-old Berkeley man while he was in an off-street parking lot in the 2500 block of Durant (near Telegraph Avenue). One of the men pointed a gun at the 56-year-old and took his phone, wallet and money. The robbers, described as black men in their 20s, standing 6 feet 1 inch tall with thin builds, drove off in a light-colored vehicle, police said.

SEXUAL BATTERY SERIES LEADS TO CHARGES A 24-year-old Berkeley man has been charged in connection with a sexual battery series in July, authorities report. Between Thursday, July 14, and Sunday, police say a man on a bicycle approached five separate women and grabbed them by their buttocks. On Sunday, police arrested William Sanchez-Gomez on suspicion of sexual battery. Police say they spotted Sanchez-Gomez riding his bike near Sacramento Street and Dwight Way at about 6:15 p.m. and arrested him.

The first incident took place July 14 at 9:40 a.m. in the 1900 block of Channing Way (near Shattuck Avenue). The July 25 incident took place at 1:40 p.m. near Francisco and Milvia streets. Two of the sexual batteries took place Friday, at 1:40 p.m. in the 1900 block of Hearst Avenue and at 5:45 p.m. at Hearst Avenue and Grant Street.

The final incident took place Sunday at 5:45 p.m. in the 2000 block of Blake Street (near Milvia Street). According to court papers, Sanchez-Gomez approached the woman from behind and “placed his hands” under her skirt, touching her on the skin. She screamed and chased the man, and later identified him during a line-up, according to court papers. Police did not release the ages or cities of residence of any of the women. They declined to do so due to the nature of the allegations.

Witnessed described another suspect as a white or hispanic, about 27 years old, 6 feet tall, wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans. The other men were described as white and in their 20s.

To make room for everything, Acer shrunk the Right Shift key, misplaced the forward slash key, and moved a bunch of other keys to unusual locations. Like anything, you can get used to them given enough time, but the way Acer shifted things around means you’re looking at a longer than normal adjustment period, and if you’re someone like me who uses Right Shift as a push-to-talk key in Discord, you may have to completely rebind certain functions.

The last big effect of owning a Triton 900 is that it could turn you into a graphics snob. Even at its native 4K resolution (3841 x 2160) on ultra graphics settings, the Triton 900 averaged 55 fps in Far Cry 5. And because the Triton 900 has a G-sync display, even when you do dip below 60 fps, games continue to look smooth. Oh, those results were only with the Triton’s overclocking settings turned on Fast instead of Fastest.

In Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 4K and the highest graphics settings, the Triton wasn’t quite as impressive as it pumped out an average of 44 fps, but considering all the graphical effects like ray tracing available in that game, that’s still pretty solid. The one thing you won’t get though is support for even higher framerates, as the Triton 900’s screen is limited to a 60Hz refresh rate. If you like seeing how all of a game’s graphical bells and whistles look on a colorful 4K screen, the Triton 900 is here for you.

The Triton 900 even comes with a handy feature for gamers who prefer using a controller instead of mouse and keyboard. On the left side of the system, there’s fold-out USB port reserved for connecting an Xbox One USB dongle. Once you plug it in, you can fold the USB port back into the laptop and go on about your gaming without any unsightly protrusions sticking out of the system. For those who prefer using a PS4 controller, you’re sadly out of luck, as the PS4 wireless adapter is too long to fit within the port’s cubby hole.

But at the same time, to get the most out of Triton, you have to commit hard. With a starting price of $3,800, the Triton 900 is the exact opposite of an impulse purchase.

You’ll have to spend time getting used to quirks like its touchpad and keyboard, and spend energy supporting it by carrying around additional accessories like gamepads, heavy power bricks, and other peripherals. And with a price this high, I really would have liked to see a screen option with a 120Hz refresh rate. Still, the Triton 900 is undeniably a finely crafted premium machine, and it’s certainly earned its place as the flagship of Acer’s gaming laptop lineup.

But open up the Triton 900 and you’ll reveal its secret weapon: a 17.3-inch 4K touchscreen that can rotate almost a full 180 degrees inside its innovative frame. This means you can use transform the notebook into 4 modes. There’s traditional laptop mode, a sort of gaming mode enabled by tilting the display and pulling it forward, a presentation mode where the screen points in the complete opposite direction, and something that’s almost a full-blown tablet mode, but not quite.

The first position is self-explanatory, while the second one is a great option for gamers who sit like Overwatch pro Dafran, with their noses 6 inches or so away from the screen. But my favorite transformation is something I’ve nicknamed battleship mode, as it basically allows the Triton 900 to become a high-powered mobile all-in-one.

By fully rotating the screen into presentation mode and then positioning the laptop so that its deck and guts sit behind the screen, you can attach an external keyboard and mouse and get a better gaming experience than a lot of custom gaming desktops. The Triton 900 has a plethora of ports including two USB-A ports, two USB-C ports, dedicated headphone and mic jacks, and Ethernet, not to mention full-size connectors for both HDMI and DisplayPort.

The only thing that really takes away from battleship mode is the placements of the Triton 900’s power port, which is smack dab in the middle of the laptops backside. It sticks out and prevents you from pushing a keyboard closer to the screen. And if you’re thinking of gaming without being plugged into an outlet, you might want to reconsider. On our video rundown test, the Triton 900 lasted just two hours and five minutes on a single charge. That means getting through even one round of Apex Legends on battery power alone could be real dicey, though that shouldn’t really be a surprise on a laptop like this.

The only mode that comes up short is tablet mode, because the Triton 900’s hinge frame comes with two small tabs that prevents the display from rotating a full 180-degrees. That means the Triton 900’s screen still has a slight tilt when laid flat, which makes it closer to something like the easel mode you get with a Microsoft Surface.

Of course, all this comes with a price, both practically and financially. The Triton 900 starts at around $3,800 for an Intel Core i7-9750H CPU, 32GB of RAM, 1TB SSD, and an Nvidia RTX 2080 GPU. And if you opt for one with a Core i9 processor similar to what we have in our review model, the price jumps up to just shy of $5,000. Yikes.

That said, the Triton 900’s biggest burden may not even be an economic one. Owning a laptop this big and powerful isn’t like deciding what color shirt to wear, it’s a lifestyle. You have to go to the gym so you can properly carry the Triton 900 from one place to another without feeling sore the next day. The laptop alone weighs just under 10 pounds, while its power brick adds another three and half pounds. The only real concession to portability Acer makes on the Triton 900 is not having to lug around dual power bricks, which sometimes happens on monsters like the MSI GT75.

You may also need to get a new bag, because the Triton 900 doesn’t even come close to fitting in my everyday carry messenger bag. In fact, there are some backpacks that can’t even accommodate the Triton 900’s dimensions, not to mention any other gamer gear you might want to lug around like headphones, mouse, and keyboard.

Speaking of mice, while most self-respecting PC gamers wouldn’t dream of playing even casual titles with a laptop’s built-in touchpad, it’s an especially bad idea on the Triton 900. In order to make room for the lights and glass window that lets you see inside the Triton 900’s case, Acer had to shift the laptop’s touchpad to the right of the keyboard, which didn’t leave the Triton 900 with a lot of space. The touchpad is seriously skinny, and while it does have discrete buttons for left and right clicks, it still feels cramped.
